Rugby’s great wanderer Christian Wade: ‘You don’t say no to Wigan’

For a man who has done it all in rugby union and experienced the bright lights of the NFL, the glint in Christian Wade’s eye when asked what drew him to a new challenge with Wigan suggests this was an opportunity he couldn’t miss.

It has been some fortnight for one of the Premiership’s all-time greats. His farewell appearance for Gloucester – and perhaps in rugby union altogether – ended with victory against Northampton and two tries. The second of those was a sensational long-range finish in the dying embers of that game which would have caught the eye of any Wigan supporters keenly checking out what their new signing is capable of.

Christian Wade of Gloucester runs towards the try-line to score against Bristol

The following day, he was in a car heading north to begin his new career as a rugby league player. Introductions done on Monday, by Wednesday he was thrust into his first Wigan training session and asked by his head coach, Matt Peet, if he fancied testing himself in a reserve match the following evening despite only two hours on the field learning a new sport.

His response? Exactly what you would expect from a player who has made it his business to take risks. “Obviously,” he said, smiling. “If not now, when will it be? Let’s do it.” So five days removed from a full house at Kingsholm, Wade was now playing in front of a couple of hundred people – which included Peet – in the slightly less glamorous surroundings of Castleford, completing around an hour.

A Super League debut may be a while away yet, with Wade pencilled in for a second reserves outing next weekend before Wigan reassess the situation. The 34-year-old is understanding of the fact it will take time to be deemed ready, with few players successfully making the transition from union to league with great success in recent years.

“There’s been a lot of league people gone into union and become good defence coaches which helps,” he says. “But the attack side of it … playing in that game last week I was like, which way are we attacking? What are we doing? The shape of the attacks are so different and there are a lot less stoppages – only when you score. But it’s good fun. I’m enjoying it.”

    Christian Wade playing for Gloucester

The transition had been happening even before that hastily arranged debut last week, with Wade revealing he has been watching clips of Wigan for weeks to prepare himself as best as possible. But he admits nothing will steel him for his new challenge better than playing games and being thrust into the thick of it.

“That was a humbling experience at Castleford,” he says. “But it was exciting to just get out there and play because the season is well under way in league. So it was good to get that baptism of fire and get it out of the way. I’ll only be better for that and the next games I play.”

League has been on Wade’s radar previously. Before attempting to launch an NFL life in 2019 he was sounded out by Toronto Wolfpack, a move that failed to materialise. But having crossed paths with so many Wigan greats throughout his career, and despite holding talks about a new deal with Gloucester, when the Warriors came calling, there was only ever going to be one answer.

“They’re probably one of the biggest brands in either code of rugby, right?” he says. “It’s Wigan. You don’t say no to Wigan. They’re the first league team everyone knows. Jason Robinson was my idol.

I worked with Shaun Edwards. Then throw guys like Martin Offiah in too. Gloucester were talking about next season but when I spoke to Wigan, their vision just aligned with mine.”

But what really appears to excite Wade is that even now, as retirement comes a little closer, he has the chance to start afresh and make an impact in a fresh environment, perhaps underlining why he has been so keen to try new things before. Indeed, Wigan insiders are said to already be impressed with Wade’s attitude.

“Making a move like this means you can’t be complacent because you have to come in and try and earn the respect of a whole new group of people,” Wade says. “I’m trying to learn this game and I don’t want to be the guy who lets the team down, and I’ve got to set the standard.

“It’s exciting. It’s not that I was bored of what happened before, I’ll always give 110%. But I love new challenges and I am better for the experiences I’ve had before, too. It all sets me up for this great opportunity.”

Clearly, given Wade’s rollercoaster career, the door can never fully be shut on a return to union. But if this is the end, does he leave with any regrets? “Absolutely not. It’s not been straightforward; people will always see the successes but they don’t know what happens behind closed doors.

“I pride myself on my career. I’ve busted doors open to make sure I make the most of every opportunity. That will be no different here. The story is still being written too.”

Wade’s short-term deal only lasts until the end of the Super League season in October. What happens beyond that? “Let’s just see how it goes,” he insists.

“It’s open-ended. I haven’t planned to do six months here then go back to union. Similarly, I haven’t thought I’ll do this, sign an extension or go to another Super League team. Let’s just enjoy the ride.”

Ipswich Town: Midfielders Linked in Transfer Rumour Round-up

As Ipswich Town prepare for the 2025/26 season following their remarkable return to the Premier League, speculation around transfer activity is heating up.

Kieran McKenna’s side, known for their high-energy pressing and structured midfield play, are expected to strengthen their squad significantly — and the midfield appears to be a key area of focus. Here’s a look at the midfielders linked with a move to Portman Road in recent weeks.

    Jacob Greaves (Hull City)

While primarily a centre-back, Jacob Greaves has occasionally slotted into a holding midfield role, prompting links with Ipswich, especially as McKenna reportedly admires his ball-playing abilities. Though not a conventional midfielder, his versatility could be attractive to a team needing squad depth. Hull may be reluctant to sell, but a bid north of £10 million could tempt them.

    Lewis Fiorini (Manchester City)

Ipswich are also rumoured to be eyeing Manchester City midfielder Lewis Fiorini. The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Blackpool, showing flashes of creativity and long-range passing that could suit McKenna’s tactical approach. With City likely to sanction a permanent deal or another Championship loan, Ipswich could be well-placed to swoop — particularly if Fiorini is open to regular top-flight minutes.

    Alex Scott (Bournemouth)

One of the more ambitious links sees Ipswich reportedly interested in Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. The former Bristol City star has struggled for consistent starts at the Vitality Stadium but remains highly rated for his vision and technical ability. A loan move has been mooted, though Bournemouth may prefer to keep him unless a sizeable offer arrives. Still, Ipswich’s Premier League status could prove persuasive.

    Matt O’Riley (Celtic)

Ipswich are also one of several English clubs monitoring Celtic’s Matt O’Riley. The Danish midfielder was one of the standout performers in the Scottish Premiership last season, combining goals, assists, and relentless work rate.

Valued at around £15–20 million, a move would signal serious intent from Town. Whether Ipswich can fend off interest from larger Premier League sides remains to be seen, but their project under McKenna is an increasingly attractive prospect.

    Joe Rothwell (Free Agent)

With financial pragmatism in mind, Joe Rothwell, recently released by Bournemouth, is another name reportedly on Ipswich’s radar. The 29-year-old brings Premier League experience, positional flexibility, and a good engine. While not the most glamorous name, his availability on a free transfer makes him a logical squad addition — particularly if Ipswich want reliable depth without breaking the bank.

    Summary

Midfield reinforcements are clearly a priority for Ipswich Town this summer, with names ranging from young talents like Fiorini to established professionals like O’Riley and Rothwell. McKenna’s ability to improve players and integrate them into his dynamic system may be key to attracting new arrivals.

Whether Ipswich splash out on a marquee name or build smartly with depth and potential in mind, the midfield will be a space to watch closely as the transfer window progresses.

Ipswich Town news: Kieran McKenna to Brentford talk, Sam Morsy exit plan, Dara O’Shea transfer chat

Ipswich Town will be making early preparations for their return to the Championship.

The Suffolk-based outfit endured a miserable return to the big time, failing to bridge the gap between second tier sides and the established top-flight clubs after Kieran McKenna’s men collected just 22 points.

Ipswich know that they will be expected to leapfrog straight back to the Premier League due to the superior financial resources they possess, although a successful summer transfer window will be imperative for the club to compete towards the top end of the table.

With this in mind, Football League World has rounded up the latest news surrounding the club.

Brentford eyeing Kieran McKenna move to replace Thomas Frank

Kieran McKenna after Ipswich Town’s win vs Chelsea

As per TBR Football, Brentford have placed Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna on their list of targets to replace Thomas Frank, who is set to depart the Bees for Tottenham Hotspur.

Brentford have reportedly been impressed with the success McKenna has brought to Portman Road over the last few years, and he is a name firmly on their radar.

Liam Rosenior is also in the mix after impressing in his first year with French side Strasbourg, while there has been talk of assistant manager Justin Cochrane taking the reins, although an internal promotion is believed to be unlikely at this stage.

Understandably turning down Brighton due to Ipswich’s participation in the Premier League last season, it could well be a different story this term, with the Bees potentially offering McKenna a fast-track route back into the top-flight.

Dara O’Shea committed to Ipswich Town cause amid PL speculation

    dara o’shea in text

Ipswich Town defender Dara O’Shea has outlined his commitment to Ipswich Town in the Championship, despite links to Premier League clubs surfacing.

The former West Brom centre-back recorded a third relegation on his CV and is rumoured to have interest from Premier League clubs yet again, including former employers Burnley, as well as Leeds and Wolves.

But when talking to the Irish Mirror, O’Shea insisted he was in it for the long haul at Portman Road.

Reported by the Irish Mirror, O’Shea said: “I’m fully committed to Ipswich at the moment.

“I’ve got another four years there, and I want to get the club back into the Premier League.

“I’m ambitious as a player, and obviously I want to be playing in the Premier League, but I know it’s not as easy as that. Whatever happens in football, it happens for a reason. You have a journey, and you’ve got to stick to that sometimes.

“I feel like I’m well capable of playing in the Premier League, and I’ve got to get myself back there now. I spoke to the gaffer at Ipswich and that’s the task he’s set me – to carry on those standards of a Premier League player and still owe it to myself to be like that.

“It’s really hard when you come off the back of relegation, but I’m happy with how I played. I’ve grown into a leader and I play better when I have that responsibility.”

Sam Morsy exit plan revealed as Middle East sides look to pounce

    Sam Morsy

According to TEAMtalk, Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy may leave the club this summer, with the Tractor Boys believed to be willing for him to exit for free, despite having another year left on his current deal.

Morsy has reportedly agreed to these terms, with TEAMtalk adding sides in the Middle East are monitoring the situation.

Emmanuel Latte Lath for Middlesbrough and Kieran McKenna for Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town eyeing 26-year-old ex-Middlesbrough striker – 4 months after completing £22.5m transfer

Morsy has played such a pivotal role in Ipswich’s rise up the leagues, and it would be such a sad ending to a glittering spell in Suffolk.

It does appear puzzling why Ipswich would let a figure with such experience and guile go in the heart of their engine room, with that second-tier knowhow potentially vital to securing immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

  • Nottingham Forest strike first in race for 19-goal Premier League striker as transfer offer sent

Nottingham Forest strike first in race for 19-goal Premier League striker as transfer offer sent

Nottingham Forest’s priority this summer will be to bring in quality and reinforce their attacking areas.

Brazilian striker Igor Jesus is on his way to Forest, with official confirmation of that deal due to come following the Club World Cup.

Turning to the Premier League, there is one striker that Nuno Espirito Santo has been interested in for some time now, with a fresh offer reportedly to have been sent.

Yoane Wissa celebrates for Brentford after scoring against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest submit ‘secret’ offer for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa

In January, Nottingham Forest pushed to sign Yoane Wissa, but their advances were rebuffed by Brentford.

Clearly, the club haven’t given up their pursuit of the 28-year-old, who enjoyed his most prolific season in the Premier League last term with 19 goals.

Indeed, according to Africa Foot, Nottingham Forest ‘secretly submitted an offer’ to secure Wissa’s services.

It remains to be seen whether Brentford will reject the Reds’ bid, as they did in January.

However, if they do, Africa Foot continue that Forest are ‘determined’ to sign the DR Congo international, deeming him ‘essential’ as they build for the 2025/26 season.

Evangelos Marinakis will need to stump up a sizable fee to get his man, the Bees seemingly demanding a fee in the region of 25 and 35 million pounds for their star striker.

Pursuing Yoane Wissa signals Nottingham Forest’s intent to build on the 2024/25 season

The aforementioned signing of Igor Jesus means there is already one new striker moving to the City Ground this summer.

Should Forest secure Yoane Wissa’s services as well, the club would significantly bolster its options up top.

That would lighten the load on Chris Wood, the New Zealander fading towards the end of the campaign following a stint out with injury.

With European football to contend with via the Europa Conference League, signing Wissa would give Forest a great chance of going deep in that competition.

The 28-year-old should therefore be strongly pursued, and great consideration should be given to matching Brentford’s demands.

  • Nottingham Forest’s £30m pursuit spells the end for a much-loved figure at the City Ground

Nottingham Forest’s £30m pursuit spells the end for a much-loved figure at the City Ground

It is set to be a summer of change at Nottingham Forest.

With the demands of the Europa Conference League next season, Nuno Espirito Santo needs to bring in reinforcements both to improve his starting XI, and to provide greater depth to the Forest first-team squad.

Igor Jesus’ move to the Reds looks to be a done deal, with official confirmation due to come after the Club World Cup.

The club are also interested in snatching a striker from their Premier League rivals, with that move likely to spell the end for one figure at the City Ground.

Yoane Wissa celebrates scoring his side’s fourth goal during the Premier League match between Brentford FC and Manchester United FC

Nottingham Forest’s interest in Yoane Wissa spells the end for Taiwo Awoniyi

After trying to sign Yoane Wissa in January, the Reds have revived their interest in the striker.

Forest have reportedly sent an offer for Wissa already this summer, who Brentford value at around £30m.

With the impending arrival of Igor Jesus, the pursuit of the DR Congo international means that Taiwo Awoniyi’s time at the club is likely coming to an end.

Indeed, Forest listened to offers for Awoniyi in January but ultimately decided to hold on to him after they couldn’t get the Wissa deal over the line.

Should the club be able to secure Wissa this time around, Awoniyi would almost certainly be able to leave in pursuit of more game time.

Comparing Taiwo Awoniyi and Yoane Wissa’s Premier League stats

Awoniyi has been at Nottingham Forest for three seasons now, the club having signed him after achieving promotion to the top-flight in 2022.

Since then, the 27-year-old has played 73 Premier League games for the Reds, scoring 17 goals.

    Statistic Taiwo Awoniyi Yoane Wissa

    Appearances 73 137

    Goals 17 45

    Assists 4 11

    Goals per game 0.23 0.33

Taiwo Awoniyi’s and Yoane Wissa’s Premier League stats compared

By comparison, Yoane Wissa has played 137 games for Brentford following the Bees’ promotion from the Championship in 2021. In that time, he has scored 45 goals.

Wissa therefore presents as an upgrade on the Nigerian, and would undoubtedly help Forest push on from their strong campaign this term.

He would also likely push Chris Wood for the spot as Forest’s starting striker, being five years younger than the New Zealander and only scoring one goal less than him in the Premier League this season as well.

  • Why Jalen Hurts Is a Dark Horse MVP Candidate, According to NFL Expert

Why Jalen Hurts Is a Dark Horse MVP Candidate, According to NFL Expert

Jalen Hurts heads into the 2025 NFL season as an intriguing dark horse MVP contender, thanks to a blend of achievements and untapped potential that make him worth watching. Though he guided the Eagles to a Super Bowl title and took home MVP honors, questions still linger regarding his place among the NFL’s top-tier quarterbacks.

Since taking over as Philadelphia’s starter in 2021, Hurts has shown steady improvement. In the past four seasons, he has thrown for close to 15,000 yards and tallied 140 total touchdowns, blending his running and passing skills with sharper efficiency. His leadership and clutch performance have been vital to the Eagles’ rise, capped by a dominant 2024 playoff performance.

Hurts benefits greatly from a loaded offensive unit. With stars like A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert, the Eagles boast one of the NFL’s most explosive attacks. Add in Saquon Barkley’s versatility out of the backfield, and Hurts gains more freedom, balancing air and ground threats. This mix sets him up for another impressive campaign.

Yet, Hurts must navigate several challenges to strengthen his MVP credentials. The Eagles’ revolving door at offensive coordinator — now with Kevin Patullo as the fifth in six years — could disrupt consistency. Critics also argue Hurts’ balanced offense might limit his stats compared to other pass-heavy quarterbacks in the MVP race.

Hurts may surprise the league by entering the MVP race this year. NFL.com’s Judy Battista expanded on this in a recent analysis on the league’s official website.

The current Super Bowl MVP had an up-and-down season last year, though he did finish as MVP runner-up in 2022. Surrounded by elite talent — A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert — Hurts has options, but with Barkley’s involvement, he might not post eye-popping numbers that MVP voters typically favor, even if his team dominates.

Nonetheless, Hurts perfectly fits today’s quarterback prototype — agile, adaptable, and mentally tough. His clutch performances and ability to win games could lift him in MVP conversations. If he sharpens his game further and keeps the Eagles among the top teams, his MVP buzz will only increase.

The Los Angeles Lakers are already dealing with salary cap challenges, and things just got more complicated with the latest update on Dorian Finney-Smith.

Following the end of the season, Finney-Smith reportedly underwent ankle surgery to address an issue that had limited him during the 2025-26 campaign and in the Lakers’ playoff loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

While he’s expected to be ready for training camp, Finney-Smith has a decision to make—he can opt out of his $15.4 million player option before June 29. Additionally, he’s eligible to sign a contract extension with the Lakers, potentially locking in a new three- or four-year deal.

Dorian Finney-Smith was traded to the Lakers from the Brooklyn Nets in December in exchange for D’Angelo Russell and several second-round draft picks. Prior to the trade, he had missed games with the Nets because of an ankle injury, and after joining the Lakers, he sat out eight more games due to what was described as “ankle management.” According to ESPN, Finney-Smith has been struggling with this ankle problem for several years, which also caused discomfort in his left calf. The team believes he’ll be pain-free following a medical procedure.

The 32-year-old wing, who celebrated his birthday on May 4, started 20 regular season games for the Lakers, during which the team posted a 14-6 record. Overall, he appeared in 43 games for Los Angeles last season, with the team going 29-14 in those contests.

    What’s Next for Dorian Finney-Smith?

A key question heading into the offseason is whether Dorian Finney-Smith will remain with the Lakers,

Finney-Smith has proven to be a valuable asset, having been traded twice in the last three seasons — first from Dallas to Brooklyn in March 2023, and then from Brooklyn to Los Angeles on December 29.

However, his price tag is set to rise. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, his current $15.4 million salary could increase significantly if the Lakers offer him a four-year extension worth up to $22.55 million annually. A more likely scenario, given he’s entering his ninth NBA season, is a three-year deal totaling around $54 million — which would translate to an $18 million annual cap hit.

The Lakers’ salary cap situation makes any potential contract increases—particularly for a role player like Finney-Smith—even more problematic. They are only $16 million below the highly limiting second apron, and with LeBron James holding a player option for the 2025-26 season, he could choose to opt out and secure a raise worth up to $56 million over the next two years.

    Anthony Elanga scores vs Spurs

With Newcastle United still chasing a deal to sign Anthony Elanga, Nottingham Forest have reportedly set their sights on signing a young Premier League gem who could replace the Swede.

Nottingham Forest battling to keep Elanga

Those in the Midlands managed to keep hold of Elanga last summer and that victory quickly paid dividends in an excellent season at the City Ground. The interest in the winger hasn’t gone away, however, and this time Newcastle have money to spend. The Magpies have already reportedly made an enquiry about signing the former Manchester United man and Forest face another fight to keep hold of one of their star players.

Elanga, himself, chose to remain coy when asked about his Nottingham Forest future whilst on international duty with Sweden recently, telling reporters: “There’s a lot of talk. I’m focusing on what I can do and my focus today was on the game. In football there are always rumors. The most important thing is that I focus on what I can control.”

After missing out on the Champions League even after a fantastic campaign, there may be some concern around the City Ground that Nuno Espirito Santo could lose his top players this summer.

As ever, Evangelos Marinakis has already set his sights on incomings of his own, though.

What’s more, the Tricky Trees are also reportedly interested in signing an impressive Premier League gem if Elanga chooses to leave the club in favour of Newcastle this summer.

Nottingham Forest assessing Oscar Bobb move

According to Football Insider’s Mick Brown, Marinakis is now assessing a Nottingham Forest move to sign Oscar Bobb from Manchester City this summer. The young winger returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines towards the end of last season and will be desperate to get up to speed with some much-needed game time.

    Manchester City’s Oscar Bobb

Brown, a former Premier League scout, told Football Insider: “A Premier League loan move is exactly what Bobb needs. After the injury he had, he has to prove to everybody that he is still capable at this level.

“It’s difficult to come back from something like that, he has some proving to do, but he has to be playing regularly to do it. If you take him out of that Man City side and put him in another Premier League team, a Crystal Palace or a Nottingham Forest, it will show where he’s at. Palace and Forest are both clubs I’ve heard are having a look at the deal.

The 21-year-old is a player who Pep Guardiola believes has “incredible potential”, but his short-term future could lie at the City Ground. It’s there that he could step into Elanga’s role and discover his best form following a frustrating injury setback.

But whilst there is a focus on replacing two of their main sources of goals, Vitor Pereira also has a centre-back on his radar, preferably someone left-footed to challenge Toti Gomes.

Robert Renan has emerged as a target for Wolves, though a player the Wanderers were linked with in January could now join a Premier League rival.

Crystal Palace have entered the race to sign Japhet Tanganga

In January, there was an onus on Pereira to improve one of the division’s worst defences, doing so with the additions of Emmanuel Agbadou and Nasser Djiga.

But following a stellar 2024/25 campaign, which saw him win the club’s Player of the Year award, the 26-year-old is now attracting interest from newly-promoted Leeds United, Sunderland and Burnley.

According to The Express, established top-flight side Crystal Palace have also entered the race for his signature, and it is believed the Eagles could have the edge if it turned into a straight four-way battle.

It emerged last week that Tanganga is available to Premier League clubs for just £1.2 million due to a clause in his contract, and while that has left Millwall sweating, several teams are licking their lips at the chance to land such a bargain.

Jose Mourinho once called Tanganga ‘fantastic’ after breaking into the first-team during his time as Tottenham manager, and now, there’s a possibility he could return to the big time, but not with Wolves.

Tanganga is no longer on Wolves’ radar

Wolves were linked with so many different centre-backs in the January transfer window, and they were only £1.2 million shy of signing Thomas Kristensen.

Though, after Pereira turned Matt Doherty into a right centre-back and watched Agbadou dominate in the Premier League, there was no longer any need to go for Tanganga.

Considering he’s a talented ball-playing defender with an eye for goal, it’s a shame they’ve perhaps quashed their interest.

However, since the need to sign a left-footed centre-back is much more pressing, Pereira is pouring his focus into that.

But realistically, anything can happen in the transfer window, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Wolves also joined the race for the Englishman.
