The England center back has less than a year left on his contract, yet this season, the manager has not included him in his first-team plan.
Following his exclusion by the new head coach Ange Postecoglou, Eric Dier has spoken with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.
In Postecoglou’s first five games in charge, including the Carabao Cup loss to Fulham in which the Australian manager made nine substitutions, Dier has yet to be named to a matchday squad for Tottenham.
Given that Dier has been a member of the Spurs leadership team for the previous few years and has spent the past nine years there, his treatment has surprised many people.
Although there is no indication of a fight or falling out, Telegraph Sport understands that Dier and Levy spoke candidly over the past week.
Levy convened the discussion, which has been kept confidential, to go through his condition and what the future might bring.
The 29-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the current campaign, and Tottenham has not yet extended it.
After Harry Kane left Tottenham and Hugo Lloris was also ruled out, Postecoglou passed over Dier for the position of captain.
Although Dier has been linked to a move to the Saudi Pro League, where the transfer market closes on Thursday night at 10 p.m. UK time, the defender will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2019.
For Dier to be included in Postecoglou’s 25-man Premier League squad, Tottenham had to sell Davinson Sanchez and Tanguy Ndombele to Galatasaray this week.
Due to a lack of coverage for Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, Postecoglou may even move Dier back to the bench of substitutes if Sanchez leaves.
Levy’s future is thought to have come up in conversation between Lloris and him in the meantime. The goalkeeper, who has one year left on his contract, declined to move to Nice on the final day of the transfer window.
Lloris has also been connected to a move to Saudi Arabia, similar to Dier.
