Brazil’s football powerhouses offer to loan players after the Chapecoense plane crash

Following the deaths of the majority of their squad in a plane crash, three of Brazil’s top clubs have said that they will provide players to Chapecoense.

On their way to Medellin, Colombia, Chapecoense administrators and players perished in a plane disaster.

They traveled to play in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final, and their opponents, Atletico Nacional, have requested that Chapecoense be given the cup.

The clubs who have given assistance are Flamengo, Palmeiras, and Sao Paulo.

Six-time national champions Sao Paulo also stated that Chapecoense should be spared demotion to the second division of Brazilian football for the upcoming three seasons while they work to restore the team.

According to a statement from Fox Sports Latin America, the crash claimed the lives of six workers from its Brazil division.

Both Nottingham Forest and Liverpool offered to loan players to Manchester United following the 1958 Munich plane disaster, while Bishop Auckland, a non-league team, had players on the Red Devils roster.

  • Danny Higginbotham dispels false Nottingham Forest narrative with ‘brilliant’ comment

Danny Higginbotham dispels false Nottingham Forest narrative with ‘brilliant’ comment

Nottingham Forest were beaten 2-1 by Fulham at the weekend in a game that probably offered up more questions than answers.

Talk of Forest being found out is premature. The Reds have massively overachieved to be sitting in third place in the Premier League and fans need to remain calm.

Fulham simply did a job on Forest at the weekend. They were disciplined, worked hard and frankly, they didn’t allow the Reds to get in behind them on too many occasions.

Troy Deeney hailed Chris Wood for his efforts. The striker scored for the 18th time during the 2024/25 campaign and he’s extremely important to what Forest are trying to do.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team are still in a nice position in the league table. With 13 games left to play, there is still a lot to play for and this season looks set to go to the wire when it comes to European places.

Danny Higginbotham hails Nottingham Forest star Chris Wood and dispels narrative

The man who spent time with Forest towards the end of his career is now a pundit over in the United States and this week he stood in for Robbie Mustoe on The 2 Robbies Podcast.

Forest’s style has been defended by Higginbotham. Espirito Santo’s counter-attacking style has drawn critique from some but it really is a case of horses for courses when it comes to the top flight.

It’s refreshing that he chose to dispel the narrative surrounding the style of play that Forest adopt in games. The counter-attacking style has often been frowned upon, with Forest 20th in the division when it comes to possession in games.

However, there are more ways to play football than the stereotypical way of keeping the ball with Espirito Santo instead preferring for his team to do their damage on the counter-attack instead.

Higginbotham was quick to praise Fulham – correctly – for their performance against Forest, whilst also finding time to join Deeney in praising Wood for his efforts in the game.

The pundit said: “I think sometimes you look this season and when Forest have scored, you look at the stats and you think they’ve scored against the run of play, that’s what it feels like but it’s not always like that. They just stick to what they’re good at.

“We saw how they set up and play and that’s how they got their equaliser through Chris Wood who is having a phenomenal season, it’s a brilliant finish.”

It’s not out of the ordinary to say that Wood is probably leading the race to win the Nottingham Forest Player of the Year accolade for 2024/25 and without his goals, the Reds wouldn’t be in contention.

Wood has stayed in form during the current campaign, picking up where he left off in 2023/24 when he bagged 14 goals and helped Forest retain their Premier League status.

Lewis O’Brien’s transfer deadline day switch to Swansea City ensured the midfielder would further extend his two-year absence from the Nottingham Forest first team.

It also sealed his fourth loan move since his last Reds appearance, a 3-0 League Cup defeat to Manchester United in January 2023, and leaves him marooned on just 13 since he arrived from Huddersfield Town following promotion.

However, he seems to be up and running for his latest club having made his Swans debut in Sunday’s 1-0 victory at Bristol City.

The 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes in his first game since November when he was with MLS outfit Los Angeles FC and impressed head coach Luke Williams who praised his industry and drive.

“His energy is just so evident, he competes for every single ball,” Williams said. “He has regularly outjumped an opponent who has got a few inches on him because he is determined.

“He also showed a lot of quality on the ball, he is very unlucky not to have an assist when he played the pass for Jisung.

“He breaks from midfield, he must have been exhausted at that point, but he makes the effort to challenge and get there, and then the cross is outstanding. It was such a positive performance for his first one.”

O’Brien has also spent time on loan with Middlesbrough and DC United but could have a role to play for the South Wales side who parted company with long-term captain Matt Grimes in the window.

  • Roman Sosa has decided on his Nottingham Forest future after approach from Europe

Roman Sosa has decided on his Nottingham Forest future after approach from Europe

Nottingham Forest signed a number of players during the summer transfer window and Paraguay international Ramon Sosa was one of the 11 newbies added to the ranks.

The Reds targeted quality over quantity in large when it came to new recruits in the summer. However, there was still some wriggle room when it came to Forest adding a South American star.

Sosa signed for Forest from Argentine outfit Talleres and it was anticipated that he’d be a regular in the team. At 25-years-old, he hardly looked like one for the future and it’s been a frustrating time for the player.

The winger has barely played in the Premier League during the 2024/25 campaign. In fact he was an unused substitute as Forest destroyed Brighton 7-0 at the City Ground last season.

Sosa has been linked with a Forest exit. Now, some information has come to light that suggests where the player’s heart lies despite not currently playing much football at the club.

Nicolas Dominguez of Nottingham Forest and Ramon Sosa of Nottingham Forest participate in the Premier League match between Nottingham Forest and Br…

Ramon Sosa now decides Forest future after January transfer window

Versus claims that Forest received a very lucrative offer to sell Sosa during the January transfer window. However, the Reds stood firm, and asked the winger what his preference was and it turned out he wanted to stay on Trentside.

An unnamed club from Europe was actually keen to offer Sosa a bit of a lifeline during the mid-season transfer window. However, the Paraguay star has a contract until 2029 and it would seem he values that.

Vasco wanted to sign Sosa during the summer transfer window. At the time it felt as though the offer to land him wasn’t quite right but it would seem that he’s happy playing for Forest.

The player has scored for Forest during his maiden campaign in the Premier League. He scored the team’s equalising goal in a 2-2 draw against Brighton back in October and he has shown flashes of promise

However, his appearances have been restricted largely due to competition for places. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga have largely occupied the wide berths with Jota Silva providing adequate backup.

It’s great that Sosa didn’t seek a move away from the club. He’s been pretty good when called upon and claimed a goal and as assist as Forest beat Luton in round three of the FA Cup back in January.

More minutes might be forthcoming against Exeter in the same competition on Tuesday night and it’s pretty useful that Forest chose not to get rid of the player dispute interest during the January window.

  • The FA have make ‘unfair’ decision involving Nottingham Forest, Chris Sutton is fuming

The FA have make ‘unfair’ decision involving Nottingham Forest, Chris Sutton is fuming

To potentially add a level of intrigue to the tie, VAR won’t be in use in the FA Cup fourth round due to a discrepancy in facilities at the various home grounds left in the competition, which will likely be music to Forest fan’s ears as VAR was wrong to rule out Nikola Milenkovic’s goal against Southampton recently.

The fixture has another unique aspect to it as well, something which Nottingham-born pundit Chris Sutton has voiced his issue within his prediction for the tie.

Chris Sutton fumes at Nottingham Forest’s FA Cup schedule

After Forest dispatched Luton Town in the FA Cup third round, Espirito Santo will be going into another game against lower-league opposition full of confidence.

However, one odd aspect of the tie is that it will be played on a Tuesday evening rather than a standard weekend slot, something that Sutton has used his weekly BBC Sport predictions column to voice his opinion on.

Sutton said: “I know it is being televised but I don’t really understand why this game has to be on a Tuesday night, and I don’t like it.

“The timing might affect Nuno Espirito Santo’s team selection before Nottingham Forest go to Fulham on Saturday. It seems unfair they cannot play at the weekend like everyone else, and have a clear week before travelling to Craven Cottage.”

Whilst this gripe didn’t stop Sutton from predicting a 3-0 win for Forest, his issue in relation to the Fulham fixture is a fair one. Fulham face Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon in their FA Cup fourth-round tie, meaning they will have three extra days of recovery and preparation for the Forest game.

It’s certainly something for the Forest manager to consider when selecting his team, with the potential to use Forest Academy stars to play against Exeter clearly there. Whatever team he selects, though, it won’t impact Sutton’s prediction as he has an evident soft spot for the City Ground club.

Chris Sutton, former professional player and pundit looks on prior to the Viaplay Cup Final between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on February …

Chris Sutton has a historical soft spot for Nottingham Forest

Continuing with his prediction, Sutton said: “This is the first time that Exeter have reached the fourth round since 1980-81, and they went on to lose to eventual winners Tottenham in the quarter-finals.

“I’d love to see Forest – have I mentioned they were my boyhood team? – repeat that feat and go all the way to the final this season. If they do make it to Wembley, I will definitely be there cheering them on.”

Being from Nottingham, Sutton was a Forest fan as a child and has clearly carried that love for the club into his football career.

Thanks to this season’s remarkable run, Sutton has claimed to be a Forest supporter again which may not be so popular with the supporters who have stuck by Forest managers through the hard times in the Championship, but his roots in Nottingham make his interest in the club make sense at least.

The idea of seeing Sutton at Wembley cheering Forest on may irritate some fans if they perhaps aren’t a fan of his punditry but if that’s what it takes to get to the final stages of the FA Cup, most supporters would be arm-in-arm with the former Blackburn star.

Nottingham Forest rejected January offer for 25-year-old – Player and Forest feel he has future – Sport Witness

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo has used Ramón Sosa as a substitute and he’s made only three starts in all competitions so far this season.

The winger has played 373 minutes from 16 matches since joining the Reds from Talleres de Córdoba last summer, after he forced the transfer.

Sosa’s limited game time at Nottingham Forest saw a club make an attempt to sign him in the winter market. That’s according to journalist Christian Martin, relayed by Versus in Paraguay.

They state an unnamed club outside the Premier League made a proposal to sign the 25-year-old. Both Nottingham Forest and the Paraguay international rejected this and the Premier League club ‘rejected an offer’.

Versus took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to report that the unnamed club was from Europe. Sosa has no plans of changing clubs as he ‘wants to stay’ at Nottingham Forest, where he has a contract lasting until 2029.

Last month, we covered claims from Brazil which explained Vasco da Gama carried out a secret to sign the Nottingham Forest player. They also stated Boca Juniors and Cruz Azul made offers to Sosa and were unsuccessful in their attempts.

  • Nottingham Forest’s strongest starting line-up amid double boost

Nottingham Forest’s strongest starting line-up amid double boost

Nottingham Forest might not have strengthened Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad on deadline day but that doesn’t mean the head coach’s selection dilemmas have got any easier.

If anything, settling on the Reds’ strongest XI is more difficult than was the case a few weeks ago. After all, Nuno’s options have been bolstered – just not through any winter window signings.

Young defender Tyler Bindon was the only new face to put pen to paper before Monday’s cut-off when he joined from Reading. However, the 20-year-old will have to wait a while to make his debut in the Garibaldi as he immediately returned to the Royals on loan.

Nuno does have more players at his disposal than he did last month, though, thanks to midfielders Danilo and Ibrahim Sangare returning from injury. And winger Callum Hudson-Odoi should not be too far behind them.

The centre of the pitch poses the greatest conundrum when it comes to picking Forest’s best line-up. Danilo and Sangare will both hope to have a big part to play in the remainder of the season.

The duo made up Nuno’s first-choice pairing back on the opening day of the campaign, before injury intervened. Danilo suffered a broken ankle against Bournemouth that day and Sangare sustained a hamstring problem a few weeks later. The former made his first Premier League start since that day when he was in the XI for last weekend’s 7-0 obliteration of Brighton and Hove Albion, while his teammate made his comeback from off the bench.

Midfield is an area where the Reds are particularly well stocked. So much so that it made sense for James Ward-Prowse to return to parent club West Ham United on deadline day as his chances of regular game time had only been further reduced.

Each of Nuno’s midfielders offers something different. Ryan Yates, Elliot Anderson and Nicolas Dominguez have all played their part in getting Forest to where they are now while Danilo and Sangare have been sidelined.

After a tricky first year, Sangare was actually starting to find his feet before he was ruled out of action. The 27-year-old should be one of the big beneficiaries from the week-long training camp in Dubai the team are currently on. It will help with his fitness and sharpness.

Even when fully fit, though, he may well have his work cut out to pin down a starting spot. Yates and Dominguez might find the same, as the combination of Danilo and Anderson worked very well against the Seagulls.

Nuno’s switch to a back three for that rout adds another variation when considering the Reds’ strongest XI. It came about in response to the 5-0 drubbing at Bournemouth as the Portuguese looked to put the focus back on being tight defensively.

It worked a treat, and it might be something he considers for at least some of the remaining 14 games. When Hudson-Odoi is back fit, though, it is difficult to look past Nuno’s usual 4-2-3-1.

The winger has been a big miss in the last two matches while out with a groin problem – even if his teammates coped pretty well without him against Brighton. He has been pictured joining in as the players have been put through their paces in Dubai, so Forest will hope he is fit again by the time they travel to face Fulham on February 15 (3pm kick-off) for their return to Premier League action.

Nottingham Forest complete signing of Manchester City winger on loan deal

Joel Ndala, a highly regarded winger, will join Manchester City on loan after the two teams have confirmed their deal.

Along with other young players, the 18-year-old made his senior debut for the team when he traveled to the United States for a preseason tour with Pep Guardiola’s first team last summer.

But because of the intense competition in the current season and the team the Catalan manager had at his disposal, it was decided to loan the winger to PSV Eindhoven, who had a conditional commitment to purchase under the terms of the contract.

Despite the fact that the season is just a few months old, Manchester City and the Dutch team have decided to immediately end Ndala’s time in the Netherlands and move him to English football.

Without hesitation, Nottingham Forest made sure they would be first in line for the player, and they have already finalized an agreement that will keep the Manchester City Academy graduate with the team for the rest of the season.

Chelsea’s bid for defender Murillo is rejected by Forest.

According to The Telegraph, Nottingham Forest rejected Chelsea’s January approach for center-back Murillo.

With a chance to qualify for the Champions League, Forest has been one of the Premier League’s unexpected teams this season.

As the transfer window came to an end, the team was able to maintain its roster despite interest in a number of important players.

Early in the transfer window, Chelsea was eager to get Murillo, but Forest wouldn’t entertain a deal. Evangelos Marinakis, the club’s owner, refused to back down from what may have been a record-breaking agreement.

The deal was reportedly worth more than the £47.5 million that Tottenham paid Forest for Brennan Johnson.

It might have been a quiet winter transfer window for Nottingham Forest but that did not stop the club getting some important business done.

For head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, the priority throughout January was to hang on to key players. The Reds did that, and they went even further by sorting new deals for a couple of them.

Nuno sets out clear Nottingham Forest transfer plan as deadline day looms

Striker Chris Wood and defender Murillo penning fresh terms was a huge positive for Forest to come out of the window with. Wood is in the form of his life but was due to become a free agent in the summer, while seeing Murillo commit his future to the club was a real statement of intent given he has no shortage of admirers.

The Reds will hope to also get Ola Aina’s situation sorted soon. An automatic year’s extension is set to be triggered on the full-back’s contract, which is due to expire in the summer. However, talks have taken place regarding a further extension for the Nigeria international. Reports have suggested Morgan Gibbs-White is in line for fresh terms, too.

Deadline day may only just have passed but attention will quickly turn to what will happen in the summer. Forest have a few players in addition to Aina whose deals are due to expire at the end of the campaign.

Last month, Wayne Hennessey penned a short-term deal until June. An offer of longer terms is unlikely but it would come as no surprise if a coaching role is found for the Welshman.

The Reds will have a call to make on Aston Villa loanee Alex Moreno. An option to make his switch a permanent one was included in the deal but the amount of game time the left-back gets between now and May will likely affect the club’s thinking.

Forest hold an option to secure centre-back Willy Boly for another year but he has been linked with a switch to Saudi Arabia in the summer. Harry Toffolo and Jonathan Panzo (currently on loan at Rio Ave) may well also depart as free agents when the time comes.

Beyond that, by the summer, three players will have just 12 months to run on their contracts. Neco Williams, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Omar Richards are all on deals running until 2026.

Of that trio, the biggest call will be over what happens with Richards. He has looked to put a nightmare couple of years with injury behind him during his loan at Rio Ave. Still, it remains to be seen whether he will have a part to play in Nuno’s plans.
