Listen to Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes, and head coach Dan Campbell for that matter, talk about the possibility of adding a player and they’ll use some iteration of the phrase “fits us” a lot. As in, said player has to “fit us” and they are talking about more than sheer talent.

During his memorable season-ending press conference when the 2023 season was over, Holmes made it very clear where he places talent on the player evaluation spectrum.

“We have to get past just looking for the most talented player,” Holmes said.” In my opinion, that’s the prerequisite of evaluation. That’s the – who’s the fastest? Who’s the strongest? Who’s got the most height? That’s a very coherent thing to do. No, it’s how do you find the right intangibles in a football player? And that’s what’s made us who we are.”

The Lions have clearly found a lot of players who fit the intangibles they want. Those players have been the foundation for the team’s progress and success since Holmes and Campbell took over, and many will remain the foundation for the foreseeable future as they “reward their own” with notable contracts.

Brad Holmes reiterates the difference between average and great players

Holmes recently did a lengthy interview with Local 4 News in Detroit at the Lions’ facility. A wide range of topics were discussed, including his thoughts on talent evaluation. We’ve heard the notes of that tune before.

“It’s just the intangibles, the intangible qualities of the players. Talent is easy to identify, it’s easy to find,” Holmes said. “This guy’s big and he’s strong. Okay, I get that, all these other hundreds and thousands are big and strong too. But who has the makeup and drive and determination and competitiveness and passion for the game that we’re looking for?”

“It’s not just about how much talent you have, it’s about how much determination, how you’re gonna face adversity,” Holmes said. “Are you gonna sink down in a hole? Are you gonna just rise to the occasion? And do you have the mental toughness and mental fortitude to do that? Those intangible qualities, that’s what we look for. In my opinion, that’s the separation between being a great player and being just an average player.”

It’s not breaking news that it takes having something extra to be a great player, and those intangibles are what separates the great from the average. Every NFL team looks for those things. But few are like the Lions in terms of knowing what those things look like to them, then finding and getting players who fit that template.

Check out the entire interview with Holmes, about 46 minutes long, below.

  • Do the Lions have a sneaky alternate plan with Hendon Hooker?

Do the Lions have a sneaky alternate plan with Hendon Hooker?

    Cooper Neill/GettyImages

When the Detroit Lions took quarterback Hendon Hooker in the third round (pick No. 68 overall) in the 2023 draft, they knew he would have what amounted to a redshirt rookie season as he worked his way back from a torn ACL late in his final college season at Tennessee.

Moving toward last season, Hooker was the easy favorite to be the Lions’ No. 2 quarterback. A finger injury lingered from OTAs into training camp, which seems to have impacted how quickly he usurped the unremarkable Nate Sudfeld in that position battle.

Hooker saw some action in the Lions’ blowout wins over the Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars during the regular season. But amid rumored interest in Daniel Jones during the season and the late-December signing of Teddy Bridgewater, it has become easy to question if Hooker has a future with the Lions.

Bridgewater was also elevated to the No. 2 quarterback spot over Hooker for the playoff game against the Washington Commanders. It seems the Lions are ready to find a different backup for Jared Goff if they can.

On last Friday’s edition of “PFT Live” with Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, NBC “Sunday Night Football” analyst Rodney Harrison pointed to the New York Jets as the top potential trade suitor for Hooker.

“I’m gonna tell ya exactly what I’m gonna do”, Harrison said. “I’m gonna call Detroit, and say ‘hey, I’m very interested in Hendon Hooker, your backup quarterback’. He’s healthy, he was a Heisman guy, until he got hurt at the University of Tennessee. I think this young man, I got a chance to see him often, he’s big, he’s smart, he’s an older guy, because he spent a lot of time in college…he’s very mature. But I would trade for Hendon Hooker. Watch out for that name.”

Do the Lions have a sneaky plan with Hendon Hooker?

Florio brought up Bridgewater being signed off the street after leading his high school alma mater to a state title and elevated over Hooker as the No. 2 quarterback for the playoff game as a possible concern.

Harrison continued to pull no punches in his praise of Hooker.

“You know Mike I was thinkin’ about that, because I was very frustrated because I thought Hendon would get his opportunity”, Harrison said. “Then I started thinkin’ ‘this kid is a really good player, maybe they don’t want the rest of the league to see this kid play and see how good this kid is.”

Harrison overlooked that Hooker’s “opportunity” for the playoff game against the Commanders would have been to be in uniform, as he had been all season, and he only would have played if something happened to Jared Goff or it was another blowout win. Goff did leave the game briefly in concussion protocol, and Bridgewater played one series that ended quickly with Jameson Williams’ 61-yard touchdown run.

Florio took it to the tentacle of if it comes out the Jets want Hooker and the Lions say no, then they might believe they have something and “aren’t ready to deploy it.”

Florio cited an example from 2006, when Sean Payton left the Dallas Cowboys to become the New Orleans Saints coach and tried to trade for Tony Romo. Then Romo became the Cowboys’ starting quarterback the following season. So if it plays out that the Jets want Hooker, or anyone else wants him for that matter, and the Lions don’t let him go, Florio wonders when they might “take the baton from Jared Goff and give it to Hendon Hooker.”

Harrison sort of backed up the idea of Hooker replacing Goff at some point, with the notion that playing Hooker may invite questions about why the Lions paid Goff like they did.

All in all, launched by the idea the Jets should be very interested in him, Harrison made Hooker out to be something we simply haven’t seen so far as an NFL quarterback. Which isn’t to say he can’t be a starter, but he’s 27 years old. So if the Lions have some sort of sneaky plan to have him replace Goff (they probably don’t, and shouldn’t), the clock is ticking. Otherwise, the door should be wide open for trade offers.

  • Former NFL GM Predicts Detroit Lions Will Land Myles Garrett

Former NFL GM Predicts Detroit Lions Will Land Myles Garrett

Could Myles Garrett be the next big acquisition for the Detroit Lions? Former NFL GM Mike Tannenbaum thinks so. During a recent appearance on “Get Up,” Tannenbaum predicted that Detroit will land the Cleveland Browns’ star pass rusher, making the case that it’s a perfect move for the Lions.

Why Myles Garrett Makes Sense for Detroit

Tannenbaum believes the Lions are in a prime position to contend for a Super Bowl, and Garrett could be the key piece to take them over the top. He said, “This just makes too much sense. If you’re the Detroit Lions, you have a chance to win right now and when you have to beat San Francisco, Philadelphia, Green Bay (and) Minnesota, you’ve got to beat some great passing games.”

Aidan Hutchinson’s Recovery & the Case for Garrett

With Aidan Hutchinson recovering from injury and Za’Darius Smith added to the fold, Tannenbaum sees Garrett as the final ingredient the Lions need. He added, “You have (Aidan) Hutchinson coming off injury. I liked the Za’Darius Smith addition, but go get a Hall of Famer in his 20’s. He may get you over the hump.”

    Cleveland’s Rebuilding Dilemma

Tannenbaum also addressed the challenges of acquiring Garrett, noting that the Browns have maintained their commitment to him. Still, he believes a trade is possible if Cleveland decides to rebuild: “If you’re Cleveland rebuilding, get as many assets as you can get.”

    The Bottom Line

With Garrett on their roster, the Lions would have one of the most formidable pass-rushing duos in the league. If this trade happens, Detroit’s Super Bowl aspirations would become much more realistic.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell has added a new offensive coach to his staff.

The Detroit Lions are adding a new offensive coach from the college ranks with a national championship pedigree to Dan Campbell’s staff. Iowa State assistant head coach and running backs coach Tyler Roehl will be joining as an offensive assistant, CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported on February 11, 2025.

Roehl was a 7-time FCS National Champion while coaching at his alma mater, North Dakota State, as a graduate assistant, running backs and tight ends coach and offensive coordinator, according to his biography on the Iowa State website. He joined the Cyclones staff in 2024 after spending 2014 to 2023 in North Dakota.

Roehl, 39, joins new offensive coordinator John Morton, who was hired from the Denver Broncos to replace Ben Johnson after Johnson left to lead the Chicago Bears. Morton was the passing game coordinator in Denver for one season after spending 2022 as a senior offensive assistant with the Lions under Campbell.

The Lions have also hired former Stanford University head coach David Shaw from the Broncos as their passing game coordinator and former NFL QB Bruce Gradkowski as an offensive assistant. Gradkowski was the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Battlehawks of the XFL/UFL for two seasons.

The Cyclones went 11-3 in 2024, reaching the Big 12 conference championship game and then beating the Miami Hurricanes in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Roehl is the second offensive coordinator from Iowa State coach Matt Campbell’s staff to make the jump to the NFL in two years. Nate Scheelhaase left the Cyclones to become the passing game coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams after the 2023 season.

Before taking the job at Iowa State, Roehl’s North Dakota State Bison offense averaged 38.1 points per game, which was the 3rd-best in the FCS in 2023.

“As coordinator in 2023, NDSU had one of the most prolific offenses in FCS. The Bison led the nation in rushing yards (3,560), rushing touchdowns (47) and overall touchdowns (74). In his five seasons leading the offense, NDSU ranked among the top five nationally in rushing offense four times and paced the nation in rushing touchdowns in three straight seasons,” the Iowa State website says. “Roehl coached five FCS All-Americans and 11 players who combined for 15 all-conference honors.”

Roehl is from West Fargo, North Dakota, and was an All-American running back for the Bison. He played for North Dakota State from 2004 to 2006 and was the starting running back for two seasons, rushing for 1,431 yards with 21 touchdowns in 2007 and 1,053 yards for 13 touchdowns in 2008.

Roehl was signed by the Seattle Seahawks in 2009 as an undrafted free agent, but tore his ACL during offseason workouts, according to InForum. He was part of a rookie camp for the Minnesota Vikings the next season but his playing career ended after that.

Roehl started his coaching career as the running backs coach at Concordia College in Minnesota in 2010. He spent a season as an offensive graduate assistant at North Dakota State and two seasons as a high school coach in Moorhead, Minnesota, before he was hired as the tight ends/fullbacks coach by the Bison in 2014.

NFL analyst takes opportunity to fully own bad Jahmyr Gibbs take in-person

everywhere. Some of it was from the “positional value” truthers, while others noted the signing of David Montgomery in free agency and/or the fact D’Andre Swift was still on the roster. Drafting Gibbs did remove any leverage the Lions might have had in trade talks about Swift.

Even months after the Lions drafted Gibbs, there were takes that have aged incredibly poorly after he has earned two Pro Bowl selections in as many seasons with double-digit rushing touchdowns in both campaigns.

Some people thought the pivot from Swift and Jamaal Williams to Montgomery and Gibbs was inconsequential-or that Montgomery was a downgrade from Williams.

It’s easy to be shown as wrong with the benefit of hindsight, and if you cover sports long enough (or not long at all) you’ll end up wrong sometimes. But it’s rare to get an opportunity to own a bad take in front of the person you had the bad take about.

NFL analyst owns bad Jahmyr Gibbs take, in-person

Montgomery and Gibbs did the promotional circuit together on behalf of Bounty this week in New Orleans. On “NFL Daily” with Gregg Rosenthal and Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic, Rosenthal took ownership of a bad tweet after the Lions drafted Gibbs.

“You guys are the subject of the worst tweet I ever had”, Rosenthal said, after saying he wanted to make an apology. “And Lions fans have never let me forget it…”

Here is the offending tweet, from April 29, 2023.

Any screenshots that are out there would make sure it lived forever in infamy, but Rosenthal has never deleted the tweet and after talking to Gibbs and Montgomery he noted how he apologized in person.

It was actually Montgomery who said Rosenthal needed to “eat that for a lot longer”, after he “pleaded” for them to have Lions fans get off his back. Gibbs said “that should stay on ya” and joked that Rosenthal must be “standing on it” if he hasn’t deleted the tweet.

    Here’s the clip.

Bad sports takes usually live without whoever gave them having to own it in-person. The NFL convention that is “Radio Row” during Super Bowl week gave Rosenthal a unique opportunity to own up to his bad take about Gibbs (and Montgomery). Good for him, but it also seems the Lions’ running back duo relished their opportunity to have fun with Rosenthal about it.

  • 2025 NFL Awards: List of every winner, Detroit Lions who received a vote

    • 2025 NFL Awards: List of every winner, Detroit Lions who received a vote

Did any Detroit Lions players or coaches come home with any 2024-25 NFL Awards?

The Detroit Lions had 11 players, coaches, and former coordinators who were nominated in several categories at this year’s NFL Awards. It’s an impressive number of representatives and puts a cap on a record-setting regular season.

All awards were voted on by 50 different NFL writers based on players’ and coaches’ performances from the 2024-25 regular season. Each voter selects five individuals for each award and orders them from first to fifth place. Each first-place vote earns that individual 10 points, second place gets five points, then three, two, and one respectively.

Let’s take a look at the results.

    • Bengals QB Joe Burrow: 0 first-place votes, 82 total points
    • Lions QB Jared Goff (5th): 0 first-place votes, 47 total points

While Goff didn’t win MVP, it was reported that his wife, Christen, is pregnant and expecting the couple’s first baby—making them the real winners of the night.

    • Bills OC Joe Brady: 2 first-place votes, 73 total points

According to the Associated Press, of the 11 coaches who have won this award, Johnson is the sixth winner to become a head coach in the same offseason, joining DeMeco Ryans (2022), Vic Fangio (2018), Pat Shurmur (2017), Kyle Shanahan (2016), and Todd Bowles (2014).

Offensive Player of the Year: Eagles RB Saquon Barkley

    • Lions OT Penei Sewell (15th): 0 first-place votes, 2 total points

The Lions having four players nominated for this award is pretty amazing, especially considering no other team had more than two. Also, shout out to Tom Brady and Tedy Bruschi, who had the guts to put Sewell on their lists.

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Commanders QB Jayden Daniels

    • No Lions nominated

Defensive Player of the Year: Broncos CB Patrick Surtain

    • Broncos CB Patrick Surtain: 26 first-place votes, 330 total points

    • Eagles LB Zack Baun: 2 first-place votes, 63 total points
    • Lions S Kerby Joseph (6th): 1 first-place vote, 60 total points

Joseph led the league in interceptions in 2024, but it wasn’t enough to get him into the top five. Aidan Hutchinson, who was the leading candidate to win the award before breaking his leg and ending his season prematurely, was in attendance. He and Goff were spotted chatting with Myles Garrett—who just announced he wanted to be traded—which surely won’t be overblown by fans and media.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Rams EDGE Jared Verse

    • Lions CB Terrion Arnold (15th): 1 fifth-place vote, 1 point

Comeback Player of the Year: Bengals QB Joe Burrow

    • Bengals QB Joe Burrow: 31 first-place votes, 370 total points

    • Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez: 2 first-place votes, 69 total points
    • Lions WR Tim Patrick (6th): 3 first-place votes, 67 total points
    • Lions WR Jameson Williams (21st): 0 first-place votes, 2 total points

After two seasons in Denver cut short due to injury, Patrick found new life in Detroit and made the most of his opportunity, earning a starting role and playing in 16 straight games.

  • The historic Week 18 matchup is set up by the Detroit Lions’ victory on Monday Night Football.

The historic Week 18 matchup is set up by the Detroit Lions’ victory on Monday Night Football.

CNN — In a rematch of the 2023 NFC Championship game, the Detroit Lions, an offensive powerhouse, continued to cruise by defeating the San Francisco 49ers 40-34 on Monday.

The Lions’ victory puts them back atop the NFC standings going into the last week of the regular season, but Detroit’s matchup on Monday night was anything from easy.

With touchdowns on their first three possessions of the game, the 49ers got off to a fast start and led 21–13 at the half by eight points.

The game was tied at 21 when the Lions opened the second half with a touchdown drive and two-point conversion, but the Niners quickly responded with another touchdown to take the lead again.

The tide shifted decisively in Detroit’s favor after two interceptions by Lions safety Kirby Joseph, and the team’s potent offense continued to rack up points as they won their 14th game of the year. With nine interceptions this season, Joseph is currently ahead of the next closest player in the NFL.

In addition to throwing three touchdown passes to set a new career best of 33 this season, Lions quarterback Jared Goff recorded his sixth 300-yard passing performance of the year.

With a season-high 117 rushing yards, Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs put the game out of the Lions’ grasp with a 30-yard touchdown run that demonstrated his lightning-fast pace.

The Lions may have scored an NFL-best 533 points on the season, but the team’s injury-plagued defense has been abused in recent games.

Over the last five games, Detroit’s opponents have scored 30 points per game on average. On Monday, San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy passed for a career-high 377 yards, and the 49ers’ offense easily moved the ball up and down the field, outscoring Detroit in the process.

The Minnesota Vikings represent the other elephant in the room. Detroit still hasn’t secured their division even though they have already won more games in a season than any other Lions club.

The Vikings have a record of 14-2. The two teams will play each other in Week 18, with the winner receiving homefield advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, a bye week, and the NFC North title.

The team that loses Sunday’s game will be the fifth seed in the NFC and will have to travel to begin the playoffs.

The loser will also create dubious history by becoming the NFL’s first-ever 14-win wild card squad.

Jake Bates’ field goal with 15 seconds left in October gave the Lions their first setback of the season, and recent history favored them.

The NFL revealed on Sunday that the crucial Week 18 match will take place in primetime, much to the pleasure of football enthusiasts.

Highlights of Sunday Night Football: Lions defeat Texans with a last-second 52-yard ( goal

The Detroit Lions defeated the Houston Texans 26-23 on Sunday, their sixth consecutive victory, thanks to a 52-yard field goal by Jake Bates as time ran out.

After falling behind 23-7 at the half, the Lions scored the game’s last 19 points.

In the victory, quarterback Jared Goff threw five interceptions, but Detroit overcame his wild performance.

Goff is only the third quarterback to throw five interceptions and win a game since 1990.

C.J. Stroud was fired four times and had two interceptions of his own for the Texans.

The Lions’ first drive ended with Goff being picked off, and eight plays later, Houston replied with a touchdown.

The Texans increased their lead with a field goal following a Detroit three-and-out.

The Lions’ 11-play, 70-yard drive to narrow the score to 10-7 gave the impression that they were finally settling into an offensive rhythm.

However, their last four drives of the first half consisted of a three-and-out, an interception, another interception on a Hail Mary try, and another three-and-out.

Houston added a touchdown and two more field goals during that period.

John Metchie’s 15-yard reception, his first of his career, was the Texans’ last touchdown.

The quarterbacks exchanged interceptions to begin the second half. Detroit eventually worked down the field for a touchdown after a Houston punt, bringing the score down to 23–13. The game suddenly came to a stop.

Before the offenses combined for three consecutive punts, the quarterbacks exchanged interceptions a second time.

With a seven-play, 64-yard drive for a touchdown to make the score 23–20, the Lions finally put everything back in order.

Houston had a late chance to win after Detroit tied the score with another seven-play drive.

Ka’imi Fairbairn missed a 58-yard field goal that would have put Houston ahead, but Stroud guided the Texans to the 40-yard line.

It is anticipated that the $21 million Bills starter will join the Lions as Carlton Davis’ replacement.

The Detroit Lions must sort through more than 30 restricted, unrestricted, and exclusive rights free agents this offseason.

Cornerback Carlton Davis, who was acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is at or near the top of the list.

Davis had one of his best seasons with the Lions, helping to stabilize one of the boundary cornerback spots while also acting as Terrion Arnold’s mentor and leader.

However, as has been the case throughout his career, Davis was unable to maintain his health, and his season ended early due to a fractured jaw sustained in Week 15. Davis has been in the NFL for seven years, but he has never participated in more than 14 games in a single season.

If the Lions want to get Davis back, they will face competition for his services because he will be among the best cornerbacks available on the free-agent market.

‘We Missed Him in a Big Way’: Mavericks’ Danté Exum will make his season debut against the Pistons.

DETROIT — As the club gets ready for their game against the Detroit Pistons, the Dallas Mavericks have made Danté Exum accessible for the first time this season, which is a positive development.

After recovering from surgery on his right wrist, Exum will be limited to 15 minutes as he gradually resumes competition.

After they manage his workload, the Mavericks will assess how his time on the court went.

Jason Kidd, the head coach of the Mavericks, stated that he would be subject to a minute restriction. “We’ll observe his stints.”

The return of Exum to the starting lineup is crucial for the Mavericks, who have been dealing with a number of injuries for months.

It is anticipated that his ability to manage the ball, create open shots, and play defense will help.

Before sustaining his injury during training camp, he was supposed to be the starting backup guard.

Kidd described him as a team player who can push the ball, set the table, play defense, and make open shots.

“We are glad to have him back because we really missed him.”
