Two players really stood out for Georgia football in their win over UMass on Saturday. The first was Carson Beck, but Georgia fans are used to seeing him play well, so that was just more of the same. The second was a surprise performance from freshman running back Nate Frazier.
Frazier finished the game with 21 carries for 136 yards and an impressive three touchdowns, all of which came in the second half, helping Georgia pull away and seal the win.
Kirby Smart recognized the standout performance from Frazier and discussed his growth after the game.
“More confidence. You know, he’s still learning. He still makes mistakes,” Smart said via 247sports.com. “But he’s electric. He’s different when the ball’s in his hands. He bursts through the hole. Sometimes, he’s too fast. He’s not always patient. But you talk about a kid who runs hard, works hard, and loves it. And the linemen love playing with him.”
“Well, nothing different, he did the same thing this week. He competes every week in practice, he gets better. He had a big, physical offensive line, and small guys, and that gave us a huge advantage.”
Nate Frazier has stepped up when Georgia needed him the most. With several running backs sidelined due to injury, Frazier has exceeded expectations.
It’s important to remember Frazier is just a freshman, so his potential is higher than what Georgia has seen in quite some time at the running back position. These extra game reps this season will only accelerate his development.
While it’s crucial for Georgia’s other running backs to get healthy, it’s reassuring to know Frazier can be relied upon when needed. Although the focus is still on this season, it’s hard not to look ahead and imagine how great Frazier could be in the coming years.
