Former Ipswich Town midfielder Kevin Horlock has been appointed the new manager of Maldon & Tiptree after leaving Needham Market.

The 52-year-old resigned from his role at the Suffolk non-league side last weekend, having been in charge at Bloomfields for over four years. He led them to Southern League Premier Central title last season.

Horlock, who previously managed the Jammers between 2016 and 2018, returns to Maldon after they were taken over by new owners. 0:00

  • “A massive blow” – Claim made as West Brom star heads for Hawthorns exit to Ipswich Town

however, a notable outgoing on deadline day, with first-choice goalkeeper Alex Palmer leaving The Hawthorns to join Premier League side Ipswich Town for an undisclosed fee.

Tony Mowbray’s side are handily placed at the minute, clinging on to that crucial final play-off spot. However, they can expect to come under fire from potentially as many as seven other clubs for that spot, in what is shaping up to be an incredible race for the Championship’s post-season.

West Brom will have regrets surrounding Alex Palmer

The deals for frontmen Lankshear and Armstrong were particularly important considering the fact that top scorer Josh Maja is facing a prolongued period on the sidelines.

The Baggies moved especially late to bolster their frontline, with the deal to bring Armstrong in on a short-term basis not confirmed and announced until more than 14 hours after the deadline.

With West Brom’s deadline day fortunes fairly mixed, we asked FLW’s resident Albion pundit, Callum Burgess, if there was anything he wished his club had or hadn’t done during the window.

Callum said: “Usually in the transfer window, Albion fans are left after the deadline feeling quite pessimistic and feeling that the club could have done more. But this time around it’s probably the opposite, where the majority are quite happy with the efforts.

“The one disappointing thing that people might be a bit annoyed about is losing Alex Palmer on deadline day. Obviously, he’s got a great record with us, so it would always have been a massive blow to lose him.

“He gets his opportunity in the Premier League with Ipswich Town, and hopefully he does well with them.”

Callum also gave his thoughts on the decision to recall young shot stopper Josh Griffiths from his League One loan spell with Bristol Rovers. He said: “Obviously, for Albion, Josh Griffiths has come back from Bristol Rovers and it seems like he’s going to get his opportunity to get the number one position.

“So, while it’s a blow in the short-term to lose Palmer, it might end up being a positive in the long-term if Griffiths can continue to keep getting better and better after a successful loan spell.

“Hopefully, he can perform well for us but, of course, in the meantime, Alex Palmer was a reliable goalkeeper for us and he did a great job for us over his years at the club.”

Palmer has displayed the kind of form all season that is sure to attract the attention of Premier League clubs.

Only three second tier ‘keepers have kept more clean sheets than Palmer’s 11 and he has been crucial to a staunch defensive showing from the Baggies that, so far, has seen them concede just 27 goals in the league.

After Aro Muric’s recent struggles, Ipswich moved quickly to add to their goalkeeping ranks in a bid to boost their top flight survival hopes. Palmer was identified as one of the Championship ‘keepers capable of making the step-up and would likely have cost less than some of the other options that could have been available.

For Palmer, he leaves The Hawthorns on a permanent basis for the first time in his career, having come through the youth ranks with the club.

Team Bath ready for Nxt Gen League opener

Team Bath will kick-start this season’s NXT Gen League against Nottingham Forest on Friday after accepting an invitation to participate in the league.

The sell-out fixture at the University of Bath will be the club’s first official match since they were omitted from the revamped Netball Super League (NSL) in May.

Team Bath were one of four sides- alongside Stretching Sirens, Surrey Storm and Severn Stars- to miss out on being included in the NSL as 10 teams were reduced to just eight as part of plans to turn the league professional.

Nottingham Forest, who are owned by the Premier League football team, and Birmingham Panthers were added in their place.

The NXT Gen League, which is referred to as a ‘U23 feeder League’ by the NSL, will feature all eight professional sides and Team Bath, who were extended an invitation to participate.

It will see all nine sides play each other home and away and will run until the weekend of 14-15 June, with fixtures aligned to NSL matches where possible.

While eligibility for the NXT Gen League is for athletes under 23, regulations state squads can include up to four players over the age of 23 to “support and enhance” the quality of the competition.

The NXT Gen League will exist as a standalone competition but will be closely connected with the NSL. Nxt Gen League 2025 opening fixtures: Match week 1: Team Bath.

Pitcher Dodgers Traded to Yankees Lands Deal With Angels

During the 2023-24 offseason, the New York Yankees traded for Victor Gonzalez and Jorbit Vivas of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Yankees sent back infielder Trey Sweeney, who was eventually dealt to the Detroit Tigers in the Jack Flaherty trade.

Gonzalez pitched in three big league seasons for the Dodgers before being traded to the Yankees. He had some decent moments, posting a 3.22 ERA and striking out 86 in 89 1/3 innings.

Searching for a new home, the left-hander found a deal.

According to MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco, Gonzalez has signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Angels.

The Angels have plenty of work to do to be a team with any sort of chance in the American League West, but the 29-year-old could be a potential reliever they look to during the campaign if he gets called up.

In 2024, he posted a 3.86 ERA for New York in 23 1/3 innings. His strikeout stuff was down, finishing with just 11, but he was able to limit runs.

If there’s reason to be concerned about Gonzalez getting a chance, his walk and FIP numbers haven’t been great. He walked 13 for the Yankees last season and threw to the likes of a 5.95 FIP.

  • Boost for Arsenal as Newcastle star is a doubt for their Carabao Cup game – Just Arsenal News

Arsenal have received a boost in their bid to overturn their Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Newcastle United.

The Gunners are determined to win the competition, but they face a tough challenge as they need to overturn a 2-0 deficit to reach the final. Mikel Arteta’s side have shown resilience this season, and they certainly have the quality to complete a comeback. However, Newcastle have already proven themselves to be a formidable opponent, and their first-leg victory demonstrated that they are fearless, even against strong opposition.

The Magpies boast some of the best players in the Premier League, and with the second leg taking place at St James’ Park, they will have the advantage of playing in front of their home fans. The atmosphere at Newcastle’s ground is always intense, and it will take a top performance from Arsenal to come away with the result they need.

Despite this, Newcastle have been dealt a potential setback, as manager Eddie Howe has confirmed that key midfielder Joelinton might miss the game through injury. The Brazilian has been a crucial part of Newcastle’s midfield this season, bringing both physicality and energy to their play. If he is unavailable, it would be a significant loss for the hosts, as his presence in midfield helps them control matches.

Speaking about the situation, Howe said, as quoted by the Daily Mail:

“Joey had a knee brace on as a precaution. I would say he is a doubt, but we will give him every chance to be fit.

“Our centre midfield, we have good strength in depth – Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley and Joe Willock – they all bring something.”

Although Newcastle have other midfield options, the potential absence of Joelinton could weaken their side, giving Arsenal a better chance of taking control of the game. The Gunners will need to be at their best, but this injury news could be a factor that plays in their favour.

Arsenal must approach the match with confidence and belief that they can turn the tie around. They have already shown on several occasions this season that they can perform under pressure, and this will be another test of their character. With the right mentality and execution, Arteta’s men have what it takes to deliver a strong performance and book their place in the final.

  • Town are set to sign Chelsea youngster Somto Boniface to join John McGreal’s U21s squad.

A deal was agreed last week and will complete today ahead of the transfer window closing at 11pm this evening.

Boniface, 18, joined the West Londoners aged nine and was named Academy Scholar of the Year in 2022/23, but is yet to make a senior appearance.

The Londoner has been capped by England at U15, U16, U17 and U18 levels, but is also eligible for Nigeria.

Town view Boniface as one for the future and is not expected to be involved with Kieran McKenna’s squad anytime soon.

After scoring against Ipswich Town, Southampton’s Aribo is prepared to compete for a spot in the top flight.

Joe Ayodele-Aribo, a midfielder for Southampton and the Super Eagles, has stated that his team will do everything in their power to stay in the English Premier League at the end of the season, according to Soccernet.ng.

Paul Onuachu’s goal in the 87th minute gave the Saints their first away victory of the season Wednesday at Portman Road. Aribo and Onuachu were the first Super Eagles players to score in a victory for St.

Mary Stadium yesterday, making Southampton’s triumph another memorable one.

Since I was at the left center back and was trying to sprint as I was rushing over, but I had nothing left in my legs and was only jogging with my hands out, the late winner [from Onuachu] was a huge relief. So, yes, that was a wonderful sensation.

He doesn’t care if he is a forward, at the back or in the middle,” Juric told the club’s official website.

Muric Returns and Enciso Makes Full Debut Against Saints
    Saturday, 1st Feb 2025 14:27

Town have made four changes for this afternoon’s crucial bottom-of-the-table clash against Southampton at Portman Road with Aro Muric, Jens Cajuste and Nathan Broadhead returning to the XI and Julio Enciso making his full debut.

Muric takes over in goal from Christian Walton, who suffered a groin strain at Anfield last week having started the last five matches, with Cieran Slicker the sub keeper.

Cajuste comes back into central midfield alongside skipper Sam Morsy, who makes his 150th start for the club, with Kalvin Phillips on the bench.

Ensico, who came off the bench at Liverpool last week, looks set to be in the centre of the three behind Liam Delap with Omari Hutchinson on the right and Nathan Broadhead on the left.

Ben Johnson and Jaden Philogene are among the subs having started last week, while Wes Burns is out for the season having suffered an ACL injury.

Southampton give debuts to January signings Welington, a Brazilian left-back, and Danish international midfielder Albert Gronbaek, while England keeper Aaron Ramsdale is back in goal with ex-Blues loanee Alex McCarthy dropping to the bench.

Another former loanee James Bree starts for the Saints, but there’s no place for Flynn Downes in the squad. Jack Stephens, Tyler Dibling and Kamaldeen Sulemana are all on the bench after returning from injury.

Town: Muric, Tuanzebe, O’Shea, Greaves, Davis, Morsy (c), Cajuste, Hutchinson, Enciso, Broadhead, Delap. Subs: Slicker, Johnson, Godfrey, Townsend, Phillips, Taylor, J. Clarke, Philogene, Hirst.

Southampton: Ramsdale, Walker-Peters, Harwood-Bellis, Aribo, Bree, Fernandes, Ugochukwu, Gronbaek, Onuachu, Welington, Bednarek (c). Subs: McCarthy, Stephens, Smallbone, Armstrong, Lallana, Sugawara, Sulemana, Dibling, Bella-Kotchap. Referee: Michael Oliver (Ashington). VAR: Jarred Gillett.

  • When Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion play one other on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League, they hope to recover from dismal losses.

Last Saturday, Forest was dragged back to earth after suffering a crushing defeat at Bournemouth, when they gave up five goals.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team is still in third position, but they are now only three points behind Newcastle United, who are in fifth place, as they attempt to maintain their Champions League qualifying slot.

In Saturday’s early kickoff slot, the Premier League’s unexpected top performers must overcome Brighton, while the Seagulls also need to bounce back from their lackluster home loss to the resurgent Everton the previous weekend.

Before falling to the Toffees, the south coast team had won two straight league games after going on a losing streak.

Brighton has six confirmed absences and several injury concerns going into the Midlands. Jason Steele, Igor, and Ferdi Kadioglu are absent in defense, and Mats Wieffer and James Milner are out in midfield.

Though there are rumors that Evan Ferguson would leave in January, the Irishman will be sidelined for the Forest match due to injury.

Well, it’s probably more than safe to say that the first meeting between Jedd Fisch’s Washington Huskies and the Oregon Ducks didn’t go the way any Washington Husky football fan would have wanted.

In Fisch’s first season leading the Huskies, Washington suffered a 28-point loss to the Ducks in Eugene, Oregon. That sort of rivalry loss in Autzen Stadium? Well, it sucked.

And it really wasn’t encouraging seeing Demond Williams Jr. routinely pummeled and sacked with ease in that rivalry game. I, for one, didn’t enjoy seeing that and I’m sure the young quarterback in his first start ever didn’t enjoy experiencing that.

But this coming Washington Husky football season, Jedd Fisch and the Huskies won’t have to go to Eugene to meet up with the Ducks. Instead, Dan Lanning will be bringing the Oregon football team to Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium.

Unless something bizarre happens between now and when UW hosts the Ducks, Washington and Oregon will meet up in Husky Stadium on November 29 to wrap up the regular season.

And Washington will take on a number of tough tests before we even see the Huskies get to play the Ducks during UW’s second season under Fisch’s guidance. Washington also gets the distinct pleasure of playing a schedule that features the Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Illinois Fighting Illini, and Wisconsin Badgers. Oh, and the Apple Cup is in there as well.

So, there are plenty of tough tests for Fisch and the Huskies this season. And of course, that regular season finale against the Oregon Ducks. But, well, at least the final regular season game of the 2025 Washington Husky schedule will be in Husky Stadium.

And here’s to hoping that Fisch and the Huskies will be able to find a way to take the Oregon Ducks down in that final regular season game.
