This Yankees vs. Giants game did not have any awkward situations. In the visitor’s dugout at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Nate Rosenhaus, the long-haired bat boy on loan from the Guardians, was wearing Yankees uniforms on Saturday for Game 1 of a doubleheader, which the Bronx Bombers won 3-2. Michael Kay, a Yankees television broadcaster, criticized Rosenhaus a year earlier for sporting a beard and hair that hung below his shoulders.
As Kay noted, it would have violated the Yankees’ “Neatness Counts” hair policy for coaches and players, which was put into place in 1976. John Flaherty, who was playing play-by-play on Saturday in place of Kay, didn’t seem to see Rosenhaus when the YES Network camera panned in on him prior to the game. Maybe he forgot about him, or maybe he was trying to avoid the kind of scandal that surrounded Kay.
