One of the biggest storylines in college football is the future of Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier.
After another disappointing loss, Florida is now 1-2 on the year with the lone victory coming against Samford. After the Week 3 loss to Texas A&M, questions swirled again about Napier’s future with the program, although he remained the coach as of Monday’s press conference.
Still, the future remains murky for Napier, and former Florida Gators quarterback Shane Matthews even gave a strong prediction on Napier during his podcast.
“I’m getting a lot of texts about Billy,” Matthews stated. “Look, I think Bily’s going to be fired. It’s just when and I don’t think it’s going to be several more weeks…They don’t really have anybody they can make the interim coach.”

Matthews stated that he thinks Napier will be forced, but not for the next several weeks, at least, especially since there is no immediate replacement as an interim.
Napier is due a $26 million buyout as of the past weekend, so that’s a huge pill to swallow if Florida decides to move on.
On the other hand, Matthews doesn’t think that will be an issue, either.
“I have no problem with who the boosters want…They are willing to pay it,” Matthew stated.
Matthews was a quarterback for the Gators in the early 1990s, winning a pair of SEC Player of the Year awards before going on to play for more than a decade in the NFL.
Nonetheless, Matthews seems convinced Napier will be fired at some point in the next couple of months.
