Michael Owen, a former striker for Manchester United, has cautioned that the team’s two players, Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford, are on the same path as former Red Devils stars Paul Pogba and Angel Di Maria.
With just two goals and two assists in 14 Premier League games this season, Rashford has been among Man United’s worst players.
However, Mount has also had difficulty since making the £60 million transfer from Chelsea to Old Trafford in the summer.
Owen, nevertheless, feels that Mount and Rashford are similar to Pogba and Di Maria, who fell short of expectations when they were at Manchester United.
“We have witnessed the arrival of Paul Pogba and Angel Di Maria for enormous sums of money in the past, and we are witnessing similar events with Rashford and Mason Mount right now,” Owen said to BoyleSports.
It’s difficult for me to name just one player who has improved over time.
“I don’t think all of these signings and homegrown players are negative ones; I’m not sure if this is coming from the ownership, management, or recruiting.
“These are excellent players who would prove their value to a different squad if they joined it. Some players at United are terrific when they leave, and some are great when they come back.
“I am aware that the guys are capable of more. The issue lies in their inability to demonstrate it. Over the years, the squad has had some of the best managers, but they never seem to be able to get the players to play together. It’s peculiar.
