Mikel Arteta challenges William Saliba after Arsenal proved Gary Neville wrong.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has challenged William Saliba to show his effectiveness in attacking set-ups more consistently. The French scored an important goal in the Gunnersand#039; 3-1 win over Burnley at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
Saliba went to Leandro Trossardand#039; headed home from a corner just minutes after Burnley had equalized through Josh Brownhill. After the 1-0 defeat against Newcastle, Gary Neville criticized Arsenaland#039 manager Nicolas Jover for shouting instructions at Trossard before he took a series of corners that failed to produce a goal. The former Manchester United defender said on Gary Neville’s Podcast: “It drove me crazy. The coach here [Nicolas Jover] also blew my mind.
andquot; He shouted as mad as he was the leader. I’m not sure that will help. He yells at Trossard who took the tackles…sit down, he knows what to do, you’ve been through the whole week, it’s on the dressing board before the game and you’ve told him three or four times. . Saka will join Arsenal training ahead of the Sevilla game
andquot;I felt he put more pressure on Trossard to make corners that Trossard couldn’t handle because his corners were terrible, andquot; Neville added. Jover may or may not have seen Nevilleand’s criticism – Arsenal certainly proved the United legend wrong after Newcastle’s defeat when they scored twice against play-off rivals Burnley.
Their manager Vincent Kompany highlighted the constant threat to score more goals. However, Arteta clearly wants more from the taller and more physical players in his squad, including Saliba.
andquot; We are the big boys, andquot; said Arteta after the Burnley win. andquot;Willy [Saliba] is a real presence but he hasn’t shown that ability consistently and we’re really working with him because he can be much more dominant and today’s goal is a prime example of that.
andquot; We thank the coaches and also him for the work done. We are the team that produces the most goals, teams are very low against us and block spaces, so it is a very good way for us to score goals as well.”
Arsenal have now scored more goals from set pieces (8) than any other Premier League club. The additions of Declan Rice and Kai Havertz in the summer transfer window have only increased the Gunners’ growth advantage over other clubs and Arteta will be keen to take advantage of that going forward.
