After seeing us enter the raucous Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuana with the three points, Mikel Arteta told his players what he believed to be a “big step” in their development.
Goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus put us 2-0 up at the start of the second half and although we saw it quickly, the boss was proud that we were able to settle the final game to secure the victory that will take us to the top. Halfway through our Champions League group.
And Mikelo was delighted that we managed to get only the fourth away win in history in such a difficult place in Spain.
Reflecting on the game, he said: “I’m very happy. I really liked the determination and courage the team showed in such a stadium. [Sevilla] haven’t lost many games in Europe in 10 years and it was incredible to play in that atmosphere. It was a big, big step for us to be able to play the way we played here.
“To come here and limit them and dominate the game like we did and create the situation we created is a huge honor because it’s very, very difficult to do that.”
The boss was pleased that we could see the game out and win because we were a bit disappointed that we didn’t manage to put the game away 3-0.
Making it difficult for us to admit it, Mikelo nevertheless believes that we are actually stronger because of experience and adversity.
“We missed some places, especially with Gabi [Martinelli],” he added. “You don’t expect that much in the Champions League and you have to be ruthless. It’s a shame because we started the second half really well, we scored and we have great chances to score the third goal, but we didn’t do it.
“In the first game they scored from a corner and the game goes on and they gain momentum. They have a lot of experience to deal with those moments and they have to really suffer and we did that very well.
“We are still on the road, many games to play, many things can happen, it shows how difficult it is to win in the Champions League, especially elsewhere.”
