Freshman wide receiver Eugene Wilson warms up before the Gators’ 52-35 loss to the Louisiana State Tigers on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, in Baton Rouge, Louisana.

UF sophomore wide receiver Eugene Wilson III will miss the rest of the 2024 season after undergoing hip surgery on Tuesday, per Swamp247.

Following a breakthrough freshman campaign in 2023, Wilson III has struggled to pick up where he left off due to nagging injury concerns. The sophomore wideout initially suffered what was deemed a lower body injury in Florida’s 45-7 win over Samford on Sept. 7, which in turn sidelined him for over a month.

Wilson III eventually made his return to the field on Oct. 12 against Tennessee. Less than three weeks later, however, he was ruled out once again for the Gators’ contest against No. 2 Georgia on Nov. 2.

Three days later, Wilson III posted a picture on his Instagram story showing himself in a wheelchair. While the exact extent of his injury remains unclear, the sophomore wideout is now slated to miss the final four games of Florida’s 2024 campaign.

Since he has only played in four games to date, Wilson III still qualifies for a redshirt this season, which in turn would give him an extra year of collegiate eligibility. He will likely return to the field as a redshirt sophomore in 2025, whether that may be for the Gators or another team should he choose to enter the transfer portal.
