The Two Big Worries for Oliver Glasner as Nottingham Forest Prepare to Sign Dodo
Nottingham Forest’s reported pursuit of Fiorentina right-back Dodo could give Oliver Glasner an important piece for his tactical plans, but the potential transfer also comes with two significant concerns for the new head coach.
Glasner is expected to reshape Forest after taking charge, with the Austrian coach known for systems that place considerable responsibility on attacking wing-backs. Dodo’s profile appears to fit that philosophy, which explains why Forest have reportedly made the Brazilian one of their transfer priorities.
However, bringing Dodo to the City Ground would not automatically solve every problem.
The first concern: Dodo’s defensive responsibilities
Dodo’s biggest attraction is his attacking ability. During the 2025-26 Serie A campaign, he made 36 appearances and established himself as an important player for Fiorentina. Across his 161 appearances for the club, he has contributed three goals and 16 assists.
That attacking output could be extremely useful in Glasner’s system, particularly if Forest move towards a back three and use Dodo as a wing-back.
The concern, however, is what happens when Forest lose possession.
Glasner’s wing-backs are expected to contribute in both directions. They must provide width and attacking threat but also recover quickly, press opponents and help protect the defensive structure. Dodo’s natural instincts are more adventurous, meaning Glasner may need to ensure the players around him can compensate when he pushes forward.
That balance will be particularly important in the Premier League, where opponents can punish even small defensive weaknesses.
The second concern: what happens to Ola Aina?
Perhaps the biggest question surrounding Dodo’s potential arrival is the future role of Ola Aina.
The Nigerian international has been one of Forest’s most dependable performers since joining the club, and his versatility makes him a valuable option. Yet Forest’s interest in Dodo suggests Glasner is looking for a specialist wing-back who can provide a high level of attacking output. One analysis noted that Dodo created significantly more chances in Serie A last season than Aina did in the Premier League.
Aina’s injury problems last season could also be a factor. He made only 18 Premier League appearances after missing a significant period with a hamstring problem. Dodo, by comparison, played 36 Serie A matches during the campaign.
That does not necessarily mean Aina is heading for the exit. Instead, Glasner could see the pair as providing different qualities and competition for the same position.
Forest must also win the transfer race
There is another immediate headache for Glasner: Dodo’s future is not entirely in Forest’s hands.
Reports have indicated that Roma have returned strongly to the race, causing the previously advancing move to Forest to stall.
That leaves Forest facing a potentially delicate negotiation. Dodo has reportedly been valued at around €20 million, while his contract situation has increased interest from clubs looking to secure an experienced full-back.
For Glasner, Dodo would make sense tactically. But the manager must ensure that the Brazilian can adapt defensively, while also managing the implications for Aina and the rest of his squad.
If Forest can overcome those two concerns and complete the transfer, Dodo could become one of the most important pieces in Glasner’s attempt to establish his preferred style at the City Ground.
