The Cowboys quietly set the stage for tanking in the NFL, making three initial moves.

Criticizing Jerry Jones all season for not going “All In”? That’s old news. Catch up, because piece by piece, he’s now overseeing his Dallas Cowboys going “All Out.” “All out,” meaning “tank the season.” Forget the optimism surrounding backup quarterback Cooper Rush, who is allegedly the best chance to win games. The 3-7 Cowboys are claiming this as they head into today’s game against 7-4 Washington. But look at their actions. In a series of moves quietly unfolding, they are starting the “Organic Tanking” process, which is likely aimed at securing a better 2025 draft pick while working on a “Blow It Up” strategy that could free up as much as $100 million in salary-cap space. With star quarterback Dak Prescott sidelined, their 2024 season is already lost. Some argue this admission of failure should’ve come sooner. After all, didn’t the Saints already fire coach Dennis Allen? Didn’t the Jets already dismiss coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas? Haven’t the Giants already cut starting QB Daniel Jones? But again, ignore what Dallas is saying – and that includes Micah Parsons, who insists “we’re a damn football team” – and pay attention to their actions.

If today’s game truly mattered, Zack Martin, the durable veteran who has missed just 11 games in his 11-year career, would’ve pushed through his two ankle injuries and a sore shoulder to play. If the game had significance, Trevon Diggs, though injured, would be out there. But neither Martin nor Diggs is even traveling to Washington! If today’s game mattered, Brandin Cooks would be active despite being healthy enough to play, and perhaps DeMarcus Lawrence would be, too. But instead, they’ll watch the game from the sidelines. That’s basically three of the “10 Steps to Tanking” we’ve discussed in advance of today’s game. (See those steps below.)

We’ll also see more of Hunter Luepke, Marist Liufau, Caelen Carson, T.J. Bass, and others. Coach Mike McCarthy knows what’s coming and likely has a “For Sale” sign on one of his two houses in DFW (see our exclusive story here). Now, it’s clear to all of Cowboys Nation. “All In” has shifted to “All Out.” While the Cowboys won’t intentionally lose today, their moves suggest the season’s focus has shifted.
