Slowly but surely Nottingham Forest are making progress under Sean Dyche – and make no mistake, this was a big victory over Liverpool.

The Reds had to ride a bit of a storm for a spell in the first half after making a bright start. But they were worthy winners at Anfield as goals from Murillo, Nicolo Savona and Morgan Gibbs-White sealed a 3-0 triumph.

In his pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to Merseyside, Dyche had talked about taking small steps. He was certainly not getting carried away with his team’s 3-1 win over Leeds United prior to the international break.

“This is a building process,” he had said. “It is small steps. You can’t get everything into a group of people straight away, it takes time to change the culture and the environment, and then to put it into practice.”

That result before the two-week hiatus was Forest’s first Premier League win under Dyche’s stewardship. Now they have back-to-back ones and a significant scalp having seen off the reigning champions.

They are also out of the relegation zone, which will come as a significant boost. This is a platform the Reds can build on.

The away end was in jubilant form as the final whistle neared. And then there was an eruption of noise when it blew.

Dyche usually heads quickly down the tunnel after games, but even he seemed to linger out on the pitch a little longer this time. His players certainly seemed like they were keen to soak up the moment for as long as possible.

Gibbs-White showed his support for the travelling contingent before heading off. It was an occasion to savour. The away fans had definitely enjoyed taunting Arne Slot once again as their team made it successive league wins at Anfield for the first time since 1963.

It might only be one result, but this can be a springboard Forest. It is what Dyche might refer to as another small step to getting back on track but it is a very sure-footed one.
