Nottingham Forest Lose Awoniyi as Yates Faces Fitness Doubt

Nottingham Forest have suffered a significant setback ahead of the new Premier League campaign, with Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi leaving the club while midfielder Ryan Yates faces uncertainty over his fitness.

Awoniyi’s departure brings an end to his four-year spell at the City Ground. The 29-year-old joined Forest in 2022 and went on to make more than 100 appearances for the club, scoring 23 goals and providing six assists. His transfer to newly promoted Coventry City was confirmed on August 17, with reports putting the fee at around £9 million.

The Nigerian forward had appeared to be part of new manager Oliver Glasner’s plans during pre-season. Awoniyi scored in two of his last three friendly appearances and had spoken positively about regaining his rhythm and sharpness ahead of the campaign.

His exit nevertheless leaves Forest with another important attacking decision to make. The club already faces questions over its striking options, with supporters identifying the need for greater depth and reliability in the position as the new season approaches.

There is also concern surrounding Ryan Yates, an influential figure in Forest’s midfield and a player who captained the side in Glasner’s first pre-season match.

Any absence for Yates would represent another potential headache for Glasner as he prepares his squad for the opening fixtures. The midfielder’s energy, leadership and defensive work have made him an important component of Forest’s midfield, particularly during difficult matches.

With Awoniyi now gone and Yates’ fitness situation requiring attention, Forest will hope the remaining squad can stay healthy as the season gets underway. Glasner’s challenge will be to build a settled team capable of improving on last season’s turbulent campaign and giving the club a more consistent start to the new Premier League season.

For Forest supporters, the immediate priority will be clarity over Yates’ condition and whether the club intends to strengthen its attacking options following Awoniyi’s departure. With competitive football now just around the corner, both issues could have a significant impact on Forest’s early-season plans.
