Aston Villa handed major boost as record signing Johan Manzambi resumes training ahead of crucial Hull trip

Aston Villa have received a timely boost ahead of their crucial Premier League trip to Hull City, with club-record signing Johan Manzambi returning to first-team training following a knee injury.

The Switzerland international midfielder took part in Aston Villa’s collective training session on Thursday, marking a significant step forward in his recovery and raising hopes that supporters may not have to wait too long to see their club’s biggest summer signing in competitive action.

Manzambi arrived at Villa Park from Freiburg during the summer in a deal that could reportedly reach around £60 million, making him the most expensive signing in Aston Villa’s history at the time. His arrival followed an impressive breakthrough period with Freiburg and Switzerland, attracting significant attention from several European clubs before Villa eventually secured his services.

However, the 20-year-old’s start to life in England was delayed by the knee problem he suffered before completing his move. His absence has been particularly frustrating for Unai Emery, who has been overseeing a heavily reshaped squad during a summer of major changes at Villa Park.

The midfielder’s return to group training therefore comes at an important moment for the club.

Villa have endured a difficult opening to their Premier League campaign, suffering defeats in their first two matches. Their early struggles have increased the pressure on Emery’s side to respond quickly, particularly with Hull City providing the next opportunity to get their season moving in the right direction.

Hull, meanwhile, have made an excellent start to their return to the Premier League and have already collected two victories. That makes Saturday’s meeting an especially demanding assignment for Villa, who will be desperate to avoid another setback.

Against that backdrop, Manzambi’s return to training is an encouraging development.

The former Freiburg midfielder is viewed as a versatile and technically gifted player who can operate in several attacking and midfield positions. His ability to carry the ball, contribute creatively and provide physical presence could give Emery another important option once he is fully fit.

Nevertheless, Villa are unlikely to take unnecessary risks with their record signing.

Reports indicate that Emery remains determined not to rush Manzambi into competitive action, meaning his participation against Hull remains uncertain. Returning to full team training is a major milestone, but it does not automatically mean that the player is ready to handle the intensity of a Premier League match.

That cautious approach is understandable given the investment Villa have made in the midfielder. With a long season ahead, the club will want Manzambi fully recovered rather than risk aggravating the injury by bringing him back too quickly.

His potential return also comes at a time when Villa are continuing to adjust to significant changes within their squad. The club have recruited several players this summer while allowing a number of established names to leave. Manzambi is therefore expected to play an important role in Emery’s plans as the new-look team develops.

For Villa supporters, seeing Manzambi back alongside his teammates will nevertheless provide plenty of encouragement. His signing was viewed as a major statement of the club’s ambition, particularly after Villa secured Champions League football and won the Europa League last season.

Whether he features at Hull or waits a little longer, his return is now firmly on the horizon.

Villa’s immediate priority, however, remains Saturday’s match. After two defeats, Emery needs his team to rediscover confidence and consistency quickly. Hull’s strong start means there will be little room for another below-par performance.

Manzambi may not be ready to provide the solution immediately, but his return gives Villa another reason for optimism.

The midfielder’s presence in training suggests his recovery is progressing well, and if he continues without setbacks, his competitive debut could arrive sooner rather than later.

For Aston Villa, that could prove to be one of the most important developments of the early season.
