Lions survive Bears’ second-half surge, top Chicago 23-20 on Thanksgiving Day

The Detroit Lions had a chance to put the game away early on Thursday but failed to do so and nearly got bit by the Chicago Bears.

Despite dominating the first half, which looked so lopsided you would’ve thought the game was over, Detroit was only up by two scores thanks to costly mistakes.

Coming into this week, only two teams have been better than the Lions at converting red zone trips into touchdowns (68.9%). On Thursday, the Lions were just 2-of-5 in the red zone, settling for field goals early.

Additionally, the Lions fumbled in the red zone right before halftime, and then things flipped in the second half.

Detroit’s offense fizzled, ending up with only one score plus two punts and a missed field goal in the final 30 minutes while Chicago woke up.

The Bears didn’t get a first down until the final minute of the first half. In the second half, they scored on three of their first four possessions. Fortunately for Detroit, Chicago shot itself in the foot with its clock management and ran out of time at the end to even attempt a field goal.

Overall, Detroit outgained Chicago 405-301 but the second half didn’t show it.

Still, despite all of that madness and several injuries, the Lions pulled it off once again and snapped their seven-game Thanksgiving Day losing streak.

Detroit moves to 11-1 on the season and has now won 10 in a row, tying their franchise record.
