Ipswich Town goalkeeper George Barrett has joined Braintree Town on loan as the young shot-stopper continues his development away from Portman Road.

The move was confirmed on August 29, with Barrett joining the National League South side on a temporary deal that is scheduled to run until January 4, 2027. The switch represents another important opportunity for the 20-year-old to gain valuable senior experience and continue his progress within the Ipswich Town system.

Barrett joined Ipswich from Walsall at the beginning of the 2025/26 season and has since been regarded as one of the goalkeeping prospects developing within the club’s academy structure. His latest loan move is designed to give him regular exposure to competitive football, something that can be difficult to guarantee for young goalkeepers at a club operating at a much higher level.

The goalkeeper has already experienced a loan spell away from Ipswich. During the previous campaign, he spent time with Enfield Town, although that spell was brought to an early end by injury. The experience nevertheless provided Barrett with an opportunity to experience football outside the academy environment and understand the demands that come with playing senior matches.

His move to Braintree now gives him another chance to build on that experience.

Braintree have welcomed Barrett into a squad competing in the National League South, where matches can provide a different test from academy football. Barrett then made his competitive debut for Braintree in their National League South fixture against Dover Athletic on August 29. The match ended in an entertaining 3-3 draw, with the Ipswich goalkeeper involved from the start. His appearance immediately gave him valuable competitive minutes and an opportunity to settle into his new team.

The result also demonstrated the type of football Barrett can expect during his spell. Braintree surrendered a 3-1 advantage before recovering to earn a point through a late equaliser, highlighting the intensity and unpredictability of the division. For a young goalkeeper, matches like this can provide important lessons in concentration, organisation and dealing with pressure.
