Villa Defeat Leaves Tottenham With Record-Worst Start

Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the 2026/27 Premier League season has reached a historic low after Aston Villa secured a 3–2 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. The defeat leaves Spurs with just two points from their opening five league matches, making it their worst start to a Premier League season on record.

The result was particularly damaging because Tottenham had shown promising signs early in the match. They created opportunities and appeared capable of taking control, but their failure to convert those chances eventually allowed Aston Villa to grow into the contest. Villa’s ability to punish defensive mistakes proved decisive as they secured their first league victory of the campaign.

Tottenham’s record now stands at two draws and three defeats from five matches. Their goal difference has fallen to -6, with the club still searching for its first league victory of the season. The figures represent a worse start than the previous low point of the 2008/09 campaign, when Spurs also collected two points from their first five matches but had a goal difference of -3.

Villa Take Advantage

Aston Villa took the lead in first-half stoppage time through Johan Manzambi. The goal came during a period when Tottenham were temporarily reduced to 10 players because Micky van de Ven had left the pitch for treatment after suffering a facial injury.

Villa reacted quickly to the numerical advantage. Boubacar Kamara’s effort was deflected into the path of Manzambi, who finished from close range. The timing of the goal was especially damaging for Tottenham, coming just before the interval and undermining a first half in which Spurs had enjoyed promising moments.

Tottenham struggled to recover after the break. Nicolas Jackson doubled Villa’s advantage after combining with Manzambi before lifting the ball over the goalkeeper and finishing calmly.

Emi Buendía then added a third with a spectacular long-range effort, putting Villa firmly in control with around 10 minutes remaining. At that stage, Tottenham appeared to be heading towards another heavy defeat.

However, the hosts produced a late response. Conor Gallagher finally ended Tottenham’s long wait for a Premier League goal this season, while Jan Paul van Hecke scored again in stoppage time to reduce the deficit to 3–2. The comeback, though, came too late to prevent Villa from taking all three points.

Growing Pressure on De Zerbi

The result increases pressure on Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi, who arrived at the club facing expectations of rebuilding a team that had endured an inconsistent previous campaign.

Following the defeat, De Zerbi highlighted Tottenham’s defensive problems and called for greater organisation and leadership from his players. He also accepted responsibility for the performance, while stressing the need for the team to respond better during difficult moments.

One of the most concerning aspects for Tottenham is their inability to recover after conceding the opening goal. The Villa match followed a familiar pattern: once Spurs fell behind, defensive uncertainty and a lack of composure allowed the opposition to take further control.

The statistics underline the scale of the problem. Tottenham’s first league goal of the season did not arrive until Gallagher’s late strike against Villa, despite the team having taken numerous shots across its opening fixtures. Villa Gain Much-Needed Confidence

For Aston Villa, the victory provided a significant boost after a difficult opening to the season. They arrived in north London without a Premier League victory, having struggled for goals during their first few matches.

Unai Emery’s side nevertheless showed greater efficiency when opportunities arrived. Manzambi, Jackson and Buendía each found the net, demonstrating a level of attacking effectiveness that Tottenham could not match for much of the contest.

The victory also continued Villa’s impressive recent record at Tottenham’s stadium. According to Opta, Villa have now won five of their last seven Premier League away matches against Spurs.

A Crucial Period Ahead

Tottenham now face an important period in their season. The international break provides time for De Zerbi and his coaching staff to analyse the problems that have contributed to the club’s poor start, but the pressure will increase if results do not improve when domestic football resumes.

The immediate concern is not simply the league position but the manner in which Spurs are conceding goals and struggling to turn possession and chances into results. With only two points from five matches, every upcoming fixture carries greater importance.

The 3–2 defeat to Aston Villa therefore represents more than another disappointing result. It has placed Tottenham in the record books for an unwanted reason and exposed weaknesses that the club will need to address quickly.
