Taiwo Awoniyi Bids Nottingham Forest Goodbye – 5 Records He Broke With the Reds

Taiwo Awoniyi’s Nottingham Forest chapter has officially come to an end, bringing the curtain down on a four-year spell that produced memorable goals, historic milestones and some unforgettable moments at the City Ground.

The Nigerian striker joined Forest in June 2022 from Union Berlin for a then club-record fee of around £17 million. Three years later, after 103 appearances, 23 goals and six assists, Awoniyi has departed for Premier League newcomers Coventry City.

Although injuries and competition for places affected his later years at the club, Awoniyi leaves behind a significant legacy. Here are five notable records and milestones he achieved in a Forest shirt.

1. Forest’s record signing

When Awoniyi arrived at the City Ground in 2022, he became Nottingham Forest’s most expensive signing at the time. The club paid approximately £17 million for the Nigerian forward following his impressive 2021–22 Bundesliga campaign with Union Berlin.

The move demonstrated how highly Forest valued the striker as they prepared for their return to the Premier League.

2. First Forest player to score in six consecutive Premier League matches since Stan Collymore

One of Awoniyi’s most impressive achievements came at the beginning of the 2023–24 campaign.

After scoring against Sheffield United in August 2023, he became the first Nottingham Forest player since Stan Collymore in 1995 to find the net in six successive Premier League matches.

The run also earned Awoniyi a place in Nigerian football history, as he became the first Nigerian to score in six consecutive Premier League matches.

3. Ten Premier League goals in Forest’s first season back in the top flight

Awoniyi played a crucial role in Forest’s successful battle for Premier League survival during the 2022–23 season.

He finished the campaign with 10 Premier League goals, making him Forest’s leading scorer as the club secured its top-flight status.

His most memorable contribution came against Arsenal in May 2023, when his goal secured a 1–0 victory that confirmed Forest’s survival.

4. Forest’s first Premier League goal in 23 years

Awoniyi also etched his name into Forest history by scoring their first Premier League goal after their return to the competition.

His strike against West Ham United on 14 August 2022 gave Forest a 1–0 victory and their first Premier League win since returning to the top flight.

It was the beginning of what would become a memorable relationship between the Nigerian striker and the City Ground faithful.

5. One of Forest’s most productive strikers of the modern era

Awoniyi leaves Forest having scored 23 goals in 103 appearances across all competitions, according to reports surrounding his departure.

His Forest career was interrupted by significant injury problems, including the serious abdominal injury he suffered in May 2025. Yet he still managed to return and produce important moments, including a goal against Tottenham in March 2026 and a memorable brace in Forest’s 3–1 victory over Chelsea in May.

A memorable Forest chapter

Awoniyi’s time at Nottingham Forest was not always straightforward, but his impact cannot be measured by statistics alone. He arrived as a record signing, helped keep the club in the Premier League, produced a historic scoring streak and became a fan favourite at the City Ground.

Now, with his move to Coventry City confirmed, the 29-year-old begins a new chapter in his Premier League career. Forest will move forward without the striker who helped them establish themselves back in England’s top flight, while Awoniyi will hope to rediscover his best form and write another successful chapter in his career.

For Nottingham Forest supporters, however, the memories of “Big T” — his power, pace, goals and important moments — will remain part of the club’s modern Premier League story.
