Former Florida Gators defensive lineman Desmond Watson wasted no time making an impression at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ rookie minicamp. At six-foot-six, 437 pounds, he is officially the heaviest player in the NFL, and a viral video of him warming up showed how much he stands out in a way few players ever have. Even among massive linemen, he looks like an entirely different breed.
The former Florida Gator spent four seasons in Gainesville, dominating the trenches and clogging up running lanes. In his senior year, he recorded 32 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and a sack, showing he could be more than just a space-eater on the defensive line.
Despite going undrafted, Tampa Bay saw something in him and signed him as a free agent. Now, he’ll have the chance to prove he belongs in the league. The questions, however, are unavoidable. Can he keep up with the speed of the NFL? Can he maintain his conditioning at his size? And will the Buccaneers find a way to maximize his rare skill set?
If Tampa Bay can unlock his potential, he could become one of the most unique stories in recent memory. And even if he never takes the field in a regular-season game, his presence guarantees he won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
