  • Mikel Arteta ‘prefers’ two stars he wants Arsenal to sign ahead of Ollie Watkins

Mikel Arteta ‘prefers’ two stars he wants Arsenal to sign ahead of Ollie Watkins

Arsenal had to go down their transfer pecking order before deciding to launch a bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins according to former Gunners midfielder Emmanuel Petit

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta would have preferred to sign two players over Ollie Watkins, according to former Gunners star Emmanuel Petit.

It emerged earlier this week than the north London side had made a move to sign Aston Villa forward Watkins, amid their desire for a new forward. Petit believes the move for the former Brentford and Exeter ace is one of ‘panic’.

Watkins has scored 10 goals already this term, in addition to providing five assists. Last term, the 28-year-old netted 19 goals and provided 13 assists.

Petit believes that the England international could prove a useful signing for Arteta. The Frenchman reckons Watkins would strengthen Arsenal’s forward line but that he was not their first choice.

Instead, Petit believes the Gunners’ preference will have been Newcastle forward Alexander Isak or Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who is on loan at Galatasaray.

“The potential signing of Ollie Watkins to Arsenal feels like a bit of a panic buy,” Petit told Metro. “He wasn’t the first-choice target, but with the January transfer window nearing its end, Arsenal have had to act.

“I’m fairly certain Arsenal would have preferred a different striker. That being said, I do like Watkins as a player. He is highly competitive, has a strong desire to score goals and provide assists, and brings real energy to the attack. He would add a physical presence to Arsenal’s forward line, and with his pace, he offers something different.

“However, there would have been a few names ahead of Ollie Watkins that Arsenal wanted. Alexander Isak possesses everything Arsenal would want and need in an out-and-out striker.

“I think Victor Osimhen would also have been on the list, but perhaps his personality and character could have been a problem going forward for Arsenal.”

Any attempt by Arsenal to sign Watkins could yet prove more difficult. Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran is close to completing a move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, which would appear to make a transfer for Watkins less likely to be sanctioned.

The clubs are said to have agreed a fee, with Duran reported to have said his goodbyes to Villa staff on Wednesday night. Duran could fly to Saudi Arabia this weekend.

Unai Emery said of a deal: “If he is leaving it’s because he wants [to]. I told you last week I wanted him here. We are different people, different objectives. The club is working and we have to be intelligent in the market.”

  • Man City’s Chloe Kelly set to return to Arsenal on loan

Chloe Kelly is set to sign for Arsenal on loan from Manchester City

The winger had appeared set to make a switch to Manchester United

LISTEN NOW: It’s All Kicking Off! Ollie Watkins to Arsenal? It’s terrible planning from Arsenal… it’s all a bit late and panicked from the Gunners!

Chloe Kelly’s short-term future looks finally to have cleared up with the England midfielder set to join Arsenal on loan until the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old’s contract at Manchester City was due to expire in June, and she looked set for a move across town to Manchester United due to location preferences.

But it now appears the north London club is where she will spend the rest of the season, with City accepting a bid from Arsenal just hours before the deadline closes.

Mail Sport understands City had only received one suitable bid for Kelly before the statement and that had been with her to consider ahead of the window closing.

The move comes after the City winger – who has started just once in the WSL this season – issued a statement saying that her situation was affecting her ‘mental wellbeing’ as she bids for more regular playing time ahead of this summer’s Euros.

Posting on Instagram late on Wednesday night, Kelly wrote: ‘With the Euros fast approaching, this summer is a huge one and I want to be in a position to give it my best shot to represent my country.

‘However, to be dictated whom I can and can’t join with only four months left of the football season is having a huge impact on not only my career by my mental wellbeing.

‘The situation has been dragged on for too long, it’s disappointing and not right.’

Arsenal are currently fourth in the WSL table, one point behind City, and Kelly will give them a positive boost as the Gunners attempt to wrangle a top-three Champions League spot.

  • Arsenal charged by FA for Michael Oliver incident after red card overturn

Arsenal charged by FA for Michael Oliver incident after red card overturn

Arsenal have been charged by the Football Association for the aftermath of Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card against Wolves.

Lewis-Skelly was sent off controversially, fouling Matt Doherty around 90 yards from goal before surprisingly being shown a straight red card.

Fortunately for Arsenal, Lewis-Skelly’s red card was overturned amid a mass of complaints from fans and the footballing world, a decision not everyone agreed with.

Arsenal players surround referee Michael Oliver after sending Myles Lewis-Skelly of Arsenal off during the Premier League match between Wolverhampt…

Arsenal charged by the FA following Myles Lewis-Skelly red card

While the Gunners won their appeal to overturn the defender’s wrongful dismissal, Arsenal are not in the clear just yet.

It’s been announced that Arsenal have received an FA charge for players surrounding referee Oliver after Lewis-Skelly’s sending-off.

“Arsenal FC has been charged after its players surrounded a match official during their Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers FC on Saturday, 25 January.

“The club allegedly failed to ensure that its players did not behave in an improper manner around the 43rd minute. Arsenal FC has until Monday, 3 February, to provide a response.”

There was a wave of attention generated from Lewis-Skelly’s wrongful dismissal, including PGMOL having to release a statement in protection of Oliver.

While the card was overturned and Lewis-Skelly’s suspension has been lifted, the Gunners are set for punishment by the FA if they do not decide to appeal the latest charge.

How FA charges work as Arsenal await punishment

Arsenal have until Monday, transfer deadline day, to respond to the FA’s charge, but how do things work?

A lot happens behind the scenes when the FA charge a club or a player for an incident, stemming from a report filed by the match officials involved in the fixture.

The FA then study the incident to determine if a charge is sanctionable, deciding whether rules were broken or not – in this case, Arsenal are determined to have overstepped a line.

Arsenal have the chance to appeal, like they did Lewis-Skelly’s red, giving the Gunners the opportunity to present evidence to determine otherwise.

A commission will then evaluate any evidence against the charge provided and decide on a punishment, which in this case, is likely to be a fine.

The red card has unleashed so much controversy for Arsenal and the Premier League, with Arteta surely looking forward to putting the incident to bed once and for all.

  • Arsenal brace for dramatic Ollie Watkins transfer twist as £64m deal ‘agreed’ and medical planned

Arsenal brace for dramatic Ollie Watkins transfer twist as £64m deal ‘agreed’ and medical planned

In order to finalise a January deal, an Aston Villa striker—not Ollie Watkins—is scheduled for a medical. Watkins was included in the starting lineup for Villa’s Champions League match against Celtic, even though the club rejected an offer of £60 million from Arsenal earlier this week. As an avid supporter of Arsenal, the 29-year-old has acknowledged that playing for the Gunners would be an absolute dream. That would imply that he is amenable to a transfer, but Villa and Unai Emery don’t seem to share that sentiment, since Jhon Duran is also drawing a lot of interest this month.

The Saudi Pro League team Al-Nassr and Chelsea have both been linked to a move for the 21-year-old, and it appears that the latter is getting close to signing him. The Athletic’s David Ornstein reports that Duran will undergo a medical examination in London on Thursday prior to finalising a £64 million (€77 million) transfer.

Emery is not expected to approve both transactions, which would indicate that Arsenal needs to work hard on Watkins. With Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen as their backup, Al-Nassr is acting swiftly to get a striker as the Saudi Arabian transfer market ends on Thursday, January 30. Based on that, Duran might still be at Villa Park, which would allow Arsenal to officially sign Watkins. Villa may not have a better time to sell than now, despite their insistence that they do not want to, considering his age, form, and contract status. Additionally, Duran is obviously a ready-made successor, so if one were to leave, the other would be assured of regular minutes going forward. But Villa

  • Already making contacts” – Fabrizio Romano’s exciting update on Arsenal & Liverpool transfer target Arsenal FC Liverpool FC

Already making contacts” – Fabrizio Romano’s exciting update on Arsenal & Liverpool transfer target Arsenal FC Liverpool FC

Fans of Liverpool and Arsenal might be interested in this afternoon’s update from transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano. Romano has stated that Premier League teams are already in talks to sign highly-regarded teenage Ajax defender Jorrel Hato before the summer, despite the fact that he makes no mention of the Gunners or the Reds.

Despite not transferring this January, Hato appears to be a player to keep an eye on during the upcoming transfer window, as he has been connected to both Liverpool and Arsenal by other sources. “I will never apologize!” Which former Arsenal player claims he was “really p***ed off” with the treatment he received before to departing? Journalist Graeme Bailey recently revealed that Liverpool was interested in the Netherlands international, and The Athletic has connected Hato to Arsenal as a target. Given Romano’s recent update on Hato’s future, it’s possible that these teams—as well as others—are already working to get his signature for the upcoming campaign.

Mikel Arteta fires back at Jamie Carragher following criticism of Arsenal star

Mikel Arteta has responded to criticism levelled at Arsenal star by Jamie Carragher ahead of the Champions League clash with Girona

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has defended summer signing Mikel Merino following criticism from pundit Jamie Carragher. The Spanish midfielder joined Arsenal in a £32m move from Real Sociedad but has struggled for consistent game time due to injuries.

Merino, 28, has started only a third of Arsenal’s Premier League matches this season, leading Carragher to question the wisdom of the transfer. However, Arteta remains optimistic about Merino’s contributions, praising his character and recent performances.

“He’s been quite unfortunate, to be honest,” Arteta said at Tuesday’s pre-Champions League press conference. “But Mikel’s character is unbelievable. He’s so determined, and now he has some rhythm and momentum. He’s had some very good moments in the last few weeks with us.”

Although Merino missed Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 victory over Wolves due to a minor injury, he has since returned to training and is available for this weekend’s Premier League clash against Manchester City.

“Unfortunately, he had a little niggle. It was nothing serious, but when you play every two and a half days, missing two matches feels like a lot. He’s fit again, and it’s great to have him back in the team,” Arteta added.

Arsenal are set to wrap up a promising Champions League group stage campaign against Girona on Wednesday. The Gunners currently sit third in the 36-team group standings and are eager to secure their position in the knockout stages.

“We’re here to win the game, and to do that, we need to be better than them,” Arteta said, acknowledging Girona’s quality. “They’re a really good side. If you look at their Champions League games against top opposition, they’ve made life very difficult. Tomorrow, it will require a very strong performance to achieve what we want.”

In a boost for Arsenal, the FA Independent Regulatory Commission overturned the red card shown to youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly during Saturday’s match against Wolves. The decision ensures the highly-rated midfielder remains available for upcoming fixtures.

While perhaps Arsenal would prefer a week off ahead

Making his long-awaited debut following his loan move from Bournemouth. The Brazilian was cup-tied in the League Cup and like Aaron Ramsdale before him, gets a chance in the final European match of the first stage of the competition with very little to play for.

Naturally, it is practically impossible for every typical starter to be rested but Jurrien Timber is surely one near the top of the list. With both Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu not returned and some fitness doubts about Josh Nichols, Partey is basically the only choice.

After having a great match in the role against Dinamo Zagreb minus one blunder, it makes natural that Jakub Kiwior would again come back into the mix for this low-stakes encounter.

A threat from set pieces and one of Arsenal’s most reliable choices in defence. It makes logical to keep him on the team because he is the most reliable defender.

Mikel Arteta will want to play more in Riccardo Calafiori’s legs after he recovers from his injury. He and the squad have benefited greatly from his goal over the weekend, and he hopes that trend continues.

Arsenal star lifts lid on impact Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card had on Gunners

    Myles Lewis-Skelly is sent off

Lewis-Skelly was sent off in the first half for Arsenal

Jurrien Timber said the Gunners didn’t want to make a point after the red card controversy at Molineux. They just wanted to take all three.

Any moans and groans were parked at half-time as Mikel Arteta and his men sifted through the wreckage of what appeared to be a fatal decision.

Leandro Trossard makes Michael Oliver anger clear in reaction spotted on camera

Arsenal will leave it to the authorities to decide if referee Michael Oliver’s decision to send off Myles Lewis-Skelly for tripping Matt Doherty should be overturned.

But they had no redress at the interval. However, it did concentrate the visitors’ minds. Timber said: “It’s bizarre. When you are in games there are a lot of things happening. I didn’t expect a red card.

“You don’t always agree with the decisions but, in the end, you just have to accept them and go. You have to react. It’s the only thing you have in your hands. You can’t keep talking about it. So, we didn’t at half time.

“The manager told us that we needed to have courage going into the second half. That we would have to sacrifice a lot because it was going to be hard with ten men. Wolverhampton away is a tough match.

“It’s not nice to go into the second half like this. But it is what it is. We showed character. That’s what we needed. We didn’t want to prove a point, we wanted to take all three.

“That’s it. We were ten men. We felt like we deserved it. We were still trying to control the game. We did that. We pushed forward. We took our momentum and took the three points.”

Arsenal started their campaign with three dismissals in their opening eight games.

Declan Rice saw red for delaying the re-start against Brighton, picking up a second caution. It was a similar story for Leandro Trossard at Manchester City while William Saliba was dismissed for dragging down Evanilson at Bournemouth.

This was different. However, although those incidents were regrettable, they at least gave the Gunners an inkling of how to push on. And that’s exactly what they did. The visitors emerged with a renewed sense of vigour, taking the game to Wolves.

They were helped by Joao Gomes’s two rash moments. He was booked for kicking the ball away in the first-half. Wolves boss Vitor Pereira told the Brazil international to ‘be careful’ after the break. He wasn’t watchful enough and a lunge at Timber saw him dismissed.

Perhaps the Portuguese should have headed that one off and substituted the midfielder who was walking a tightrope after also committing a couple of fouls in the opening 45 minutes. Following his dismissal, the air of optimism evaporated quickly.

Riccardo Calafiori produced what the Dutchman described as ‘a striker’s finish’ to convert in the final quarter after Nelson Semedo headed clear Gabriel Martinell’s right-wing cross. Timber added: “It’s not the first time it’s happened to us.

Leandro Trossard makes Michael Oliver anger clear in reaction spotted on camera

“It’s still hard but on the other side we also know how to deal with it now. We’ve been through a lot this season. But we would never not fight. This is the character of the team. Our defence showed we are a team – and we are not easy to beat.

“And we gained energy. Games like this give you that. The way the fans reacted to the red card – it got us going.”

football news | Arsenal could make surprise striker signing – David Ornstein

The Gunners are short up front at the moment after a serious knee injury for Gabriel Jesus. He could be sidelined for the rest of the year.

Kai Havertz has played as the main striker for the past few games, but the German has looked jaded with the heavy workload on him.

Arsenal desperately need to freshen up their strikeforce and Ornstein admits that they could do something before the window closes.

He has no idea over potential targets, but acknowledged that there is no chance that Alexander Isak will join the Gunners this winter.

Newcastle United are pushing for Champions League football and have no plans of strengthening their top-four rivals mid-season.

RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is also expected to stay put. He could, however, move from the Bundesliga outfit in the summer.

Akani Simbine has explained the reason behind his decision to avoid placing himself in the same class as Usain Bolt and other legendary sprinters.

South African sprinting sensation Akani Simbine has detailed why he does not want to be named among the greatest sprinters just yet.

The Olympic 4x100m silver medallist is not yet ready to be named alongside the likes of Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, Justin Gatlin, and Noah Lyles as he eyes greater milestones going forward in his career.

Despite being one of the most consistent sprinters of all time and a former African record holder, he revealed that there are things he wants to achieve first before being recognised as one of the greats.

In an interview with Team South Africa, Akani Simbine revealed that he wants to leave a strong legacy, not just in sports but in every sector in his home country.

He believes that South Africa has the potential to excel in sports, the economy, and technology among many other projects if they put their best foot forward.

“I don’t see myself as that you know, because my story is still being written but there’s two parts of that, I know I’m one of them, I know I’m part of that story and list but now I’m not trying to kind of like get lost in that,” Akani Simbine said.

“There’s still so much that I want to do with my running and with how I am as a sprinter and how I show South Africa that we can be great and we can compete against the world. that’s my whole thing, in every facet, we have the resources and we can be anything.”

Meanwhile, Simbine is undoubtedly one of the sprinters who paved the way for professional sprinting in Africa.

Last season was a mixed for the South African ace who kick started his Olympic campaign with the 150m race at the Curro Podium Final and then later extended the winning streak to the South African Championships.

Akani Simbine then won the 100m at the Diamond League Meeting in Suzhou before competing at the World Athletics Relays in the Bahamas.

After that, Akani Simbine competed at the Diamond League Meeting in Oslo, the Meeting Madrid 2024, Gyulai István Memorial, Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix and then the Diamond League Meeting in London before heading to the Paris Olympic Games where he finished fourth in the men’s 100m final.

Akani Simbine also anchored the South African 4x100m relay team to a silver medal behind Team Canada. After the Olympic Games, he raced twice before rounding up his season at the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels where he finished fifth.

He now hopes to build up from where he left from as he looks to impress at this season and also make the cut to the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
