Arsenal player ratings vs Palace as Jesus streak continues and Rice impresses

Gabriel Jesus celebrates after scoring for Arsenal against Crystal Palace

The game off to a flying start for Arsenal and for Gabriel Jesus in particular, who kept up his hot streak inside six minutes. Palace weren’t going down lightly, though, and equalised almost immediately through a superb curling effort by Ismaila Sarr.

A seesaw affair saw Arsenal regain the lead minutes later when Jesus was again on hand to fire home a second. The Brazilian would turn provider around the half hour mark when Kai Havertz turned in his header that had bounced off the post.

Jesus was involved again for the fourth Arsenal goal as the rebound from his close-range effort fell to Declan Rice, whose effort was diverted in by Gabriel Martinelli. Rice then added a fifth late on with a lovely looping effort. Here’s how football.london rated the Arsenal players individually in the match.

David Raya: Some shaky playing out from the back in the first half that landed Arsenal in trouble but redeemed himself with some fine saves in the second period. 7.

Jurrien Timber: Booked for time wasting in the first half, somewhat bizarrely. Defensively solid, even if he was at times culpable in the poor play from the back. 6

William Saliba: Not his best day at the office. The finish from Sarr was a fine one but he could have engaged earlier. Very sloppy on the ball as well, almost giving away a goal with one error. 5.

Gabriel: Saw a header cannon off the bar for what would have been yet another goal. Defended pretty well alongside Lewis-Skelly. 6.

Myles Lewis-Skelly: Given a torrid time by the opposing fans for perceived time-wasting but stood up to it well. Many 18-year-olds would have struggled under this pressure, but he coped well for the most part. 6.

Thomas Partey: Some really sloppy moments in possession in the first half and was caught out of position for Sarr’s goal. Recovered to have a more assured second period. 6.

Martin Odegaard: Battled well in the Arsenal midfield and provided grit in a deeper role than usual.. Technically impressive as ever. 7.

Kai Havertz: Back in the midfield role and looked pretty good. Some decent movement in deeper areas and got his reward for following in beyond Jesus with a tap in. 7.

Bukayo Saka: Put in a superb ball to create the opener before coming off in the first half. Looked like a muscular issue. The hope will be it’s not too serious. 7.

Gabriel Jesus: The Brazilian is well and truly back. For a while you had to wonder if anything he touched wouldn’t go in the net. Involved in all of Arsenal’s first four goals and it could have been more! 9.

Gabriel Martinelli: Moved over to the right hand side and looked more of a threat than in recent weeks. A good cross to create the second and a deserved stroke of luck with the goal. 8.

Leandro Trossard: Maintained the Arsenal attacking threat down the left hand side after Saka went off without necessarily doing anything too eye-catching. Disciplined in the second period. 7.

Declan Rice: Made an instant offensive impact after coming on by setting up Martinelli. His finish for his goal was then superb. You can’t give him time in the box! 8.

Riccardo Calafiori: His bull in a china shop approach is going to get him into trouble at some point. Good to have him back after a period out though. 6.

  • Gabriel Jesus reveals the one thing he’ll ‘never’ ask of Mikel Arteta after Arsenal hat-trick heroics

Gabriel Jesus reveals the one thing he’ll ‘never’ ask of Mikel Arteta after Arsenal hat-trick heroics

As the Gunners were trailing against the Eagles in the EFL Cup quarter final tie, Gabriel Jesus suddenly found the kind of form that he has been missing for so long to turn the game on its head.

The Brazilian’s goals secured Arsenal’s place in the semi-finals of the competition, and could not have come at a better time for the striker.

Criticisms of Jesus have been mounting in recent weeks, as prior to this flurry of strikes against Crystal Palace, the former Manchester City man had netted just once for the Gunners since January.

Mikel Arteta now needs the 27-year-old to kick on and use this confidence boost to prove that he can impress on a consistent basis.

Plenty of Arsenal fans will want to Jesus to keep his place in the starting XI for this weekend’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace, after he put the South London outfit to the sword so impressively in the EFL Cup.

However, the forward has made it clear that he will not demand more game time from the manager in person, as he would rather state his case for greater involvement with his performances on the pitch.

Speaking to journalist Jordan Davies after his showing against Crystal Palace, as reported on X, the Brazil international shared his principles when it comes to communicating with the Arsenal manager.

He said: “I have knocked on a manager’s door once in my life… Pep’s door, not to complain, but to ask what I could improve. There is no difference here. I would never go to Mikel’s door and say: ‘I want to play’. There is competition. I understand, but I know I can help.”

Is Jesus’ mentality a problem for Arsenal?

There is an argument, though, that Jesus ought to be banging on Arteta’s door and asking for another start after his performance against Crystal Palace.

The striker has to back himself, and show that he is confident that he can continue to deliver.

Jesus’ attitude was recently questioned by Troy Deeney, who recalled that he Arsenal star once admitted that goalscoring is not his strong suit.

Jesus needs to show that he can be ruthless and single-minded on and off the pitch, and that may mean delivering another message to Arteta behind the scenes at the Emirates Stadium.

Bukayo Saka shares what he told Myles Lewis-Skelly before first Champions League start for Arsenal

Arsenal got back to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

The Gunners were the dominant side in this Champions League encounter, as a Bukayo Saka brace and a late Kai Havertz strike secured the triumph.

Mikel Arteta faced some challenges heading into this fixture. Arsenal are currently in the midst of a defensive injury crisis. As such, the Spanish coach had to shake things up with his starting XI selection.

Thomas Partey survived an injury scare of his own and was fit to deputise at right-back. Meanwhile, Myles Lewis-Skelly was afforded his first ever Champions League start at left-back.

What Bukayo Saka said to Myles Lewis-Skelly

Lewis-Skelly impressed Arsenal fans with his performance. The 18-year-old was composed on the ball and showed great maturity with his display.

The Hale End academy gem also played a vital role in the build up to the opening goal. Lewis-Skelly showed off his quick feet to beat an opponent, and then broke open the Monaco defence with a brilliant through-ball to Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian striker was able to pick out Saka at the back post, who tapped in from close range.

After the final whistle, speaking to TNT Sports (11/12/2024, 21:55), Saka was quick to praise Lewis-Skelly, and revealed what he said to his fellow homegrown talent prior to kick off.

Saka said: “I just said to him, like I said to him before the game, that this is his level and he needs to have no doubts and do what we see him do in training. Amazed with him and he played a big part in the first goal.”

Lewis-Skelly proves point for Arsenal in Champions League

Lewis-Skelly demonstrated with his display against Monaco that he can be relied upon to step up and shine on the biggest stage.

He has now made seven first team appearances this season, and is clearly ready for more game time.

Lewis-Skelly has now shown Arteta that he doesn’t need to sign another defender, and that he ought to be in contention to start games for the Gunners on a more regular basis.

The teenager deserves further opportunities, and with Arsenal’s current injury woes now is the perfect time to give him a run in the team.

  • Jurrien Timber’s recent Arsenal form spells trouble for ‘warrior’ who faces brand new fight

Jurrien Timber’s recent Arsenal form spells trouble for ‘warrior’ who faces brand new fight

There is healthy competition for places across multiple positions in the Arsenal squad.

Mikel Arteta will welcome this competition, and will want every player in his squad feeling that they are in a fight for a place at the top of the pecking order.

In certain positions this competition is more fierce than others, and Jurrien Timber is now making up for lost time at the Emirates Stadium by making a statement that he ought to be the Gunners’ first choice right-back.

Jurrien Timber proves point at Arsenal

The Dutch defender missed out on almost the entirety of his first season in North London, after sustaining an ACL injury on the first day of the new Premier League campaign last time around.

As such, the former Ajax man was not able to establish himself in Arteta’s plans or nail down a place in the regular starting XI. What’s more the 23-year-old’s natural versatility means that he has often been called upon to plug gaps in the backline as and when they have appeared.

However, Timber used his time wisely whilst he was sidelined, studying Arteta’s tactics, to ensure that he would slot comfortably into the side upon his return.

This preparation has now paid off as the Netherlands international is enjoying a run in the team and is impressing on a regular basis. Timber was once again excellent as Arsenal put West Ham United to the sword on Saturday evening.

How will Ben White respond to new challenge?

Ben White’s injury has opened the door for Timber to stake his claim to be the first-choice right-back. Whilst the former Brighton man has undergone surgery, Timber is threatening his status in the squad.

White has never really known this kind of competition before in his time at the club so far. Due to Timber’s long-term layoff last season, Takehiro Tomiyasu’s own poor fitness record, and a lack of other quality options in that part of the pitch, the Englishman has made the role his own.

As impressive as White has been for Arsenal, the pressure on him to play week in, week out has taken its toll. White has been described as a “warrior” before for his ability to play through pain.

Timber has now eased this burden on the full-back, but he represents a new threat. It will be fascinating to see how White confronts this battle upon his return.
