State income tax exemption proposed for NIL compensation in Senate bill

The sponsor of a Georgia Senate bill that would exempt college athletes from state income tax for compensation they make through NIL deals said he’s “basically calling it the Kirby Smart bill.”

Brandon Beach, a Republican who represents Senate District 21 that includes north Fulton County and Cherokee County, said Georgia football and other state programs are at a recruiting disadvantage because players have to pay a 5.39% income tax on deals for their name, image and likeness.

Georgia Senate Bill 71 was put in the finance committee Tuesday, Beach said, as it works its way through the legislative process.

“Listen, recruiting is a very, very competitive sport,” Beach told the Athens Banner-Herald on Tuesday. “When you’re recruiting these five-star athletes, they all have agents and we’re competing with Tennessee, Texas and Florida who have no state income tax. Eventually, we’ll get there and we won’t have a state income tax. I hope that happens, but until then we’ve got to get Kirby and these football coaches and basketball coaches, these coaches a tool in their toolbox to be able to compete.”

Beach said he’s actually not talked to Smart, the two-time national championship winning UGA football coach, about the bill, but said the idea came after a dinner he had with former Alabama coach Nick Saban and others at a home on Lake Burton, where Saban has a lake house.

He said Saban told him Missouri passed an NIL law after losing recruits to schools like Texas and Texas A&M that didn’t pay state income tax.

Missouri’s NIL bill, approved in 2023, allows in-state athletes to make money from endorsement deals in high school if they sign with public universities in that state.

Beach mentioned that Texas and Tennessee made the College Football Playoff this year and those schools don’t have state income taxes.

“When you’re talking about a $750,000 to a $1 million contract, these young kids and the agents say, ‘Hey, if you go to Texas, you’ll make another $40,000 by not paying state income tax’ or whatever the amount is. That can sway the difference in an athlete going somewhere else.”

Beach is a Republican as are the four other co-sponsors: Frank Ginn (21st District which includes Clarke, Barrow, Jackson, and Madison counties), Greg Dolezal (27th), Ben Watson (1st) and Carden Summers (13th).

“I think we’ll get major support,” he said.

He said someone asked him why a player like former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck, who drove a Lamborghini last year and has made millions in NIL deals, needs a tax break.

“We want to keep our athletes here and be competitive and win national championships and compete with states that don’t have an income tax, we’ve got to help them out,” he said.

Beach said athletes from Georgia won’t get this exemption if they go play in another state or transfer to a school in another state.

UGA athletics said it would not comment on the bill.

Beach said he hasn’t spoken to athletic director Josh Brooks or UGA president Jere Morehead about it, but he may call Brooks.

“College athletics generates millions of dollars for our university and local businesses and really the state economy,” Beach said. “Bill 71 will just help sustain that growth by putting a winning program on the field and putting the best athletes on the field and help these coaches in the recruiting battles.”

  • Myles Garrett trade request has many speculating NY Jets’ Garrett Wilson is next

Myles Garrett trade request has many speculating NY Jets’ Garrett Wilson is next

The NY Jets are no strangers to superstar trade requests. Following the news of reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett’s trade request on Monday, the Jets are hoping that Garrett Wilson isn’t the next star to join him this offseason.

The Jets have been forced to deal with multiple high-profile trade requests in recent years. Just this past season, Haason Reddick asked out before he ever suited up for a game with the team. Reddick wasn’t ultimately dealt, but the same can’t be said for the team’s last homegrown star to request a trade: Jamal Adams.

It’s safe to say the Jets hope that Wilson’s situation doesn’t reach a boiling point like it did with Adams over a half-decade ago now. There is concern, however, that a Wilson trade request is inevitable.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini fueled speculation about a Wilson trade when commenting on the Garrett request on Monday. Cimini noted that Garrett was the “first bombshell trade request of the offseason,” seemingly hinting that there were more to come.

This prompted many Jets fans to speculate that this was a reference to Wilson and his obvious frustrations.

The NY Jets still fear a Garrett Wilson trade request

Wilson’s status will be one of the most important storylines for the Jets this offseason. The former first-round pick has publicly and privately expressed his frustration with the organization’s lack of direction and overall incompetence during his time in New York.

The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt reported in December that many inside (and outside) the Jets organization wonder “when — not if — Wilson will request a trade.” Many seem to believe it’s only a matter of time.

There have been rumblings that Wilson was unhappy with his role in the Jets’ offense following the Davante Adams trade last season, with some believing that Aaron Rodgers’ preference for his ex-Packers teammate rubbed Wilson the wrong way.

Wilson’s role notably diminished following the Adams acquisition and he was relegated to the role of WR2 in the Jets’ offense. Combine that with a revolving door of head coaches, offensive coordinators, and quarterbacks and it’s easy to see why Wilson might want out.

The good news for the Jets is that they won’t be forced to honor a Wilson trade request even if it happens. The former Ohio State star is under contract in 2025 and likely will be in 2026 once the Jets exercise his fifth-year option.

The Jets also have the flexibility to place the franchise tag on Wilson in 2027 and even 2028 if it gets to that point. The organization holds all the leverage in this situation — not Wilson.

Still, it’s never ideal when a supposed franchise cornerstone and team leader publicly requests a trade. The Cleveland Browns may have no plans to trade Myles Garrett, but that doesn’t mean his public request won’t serve as an unnecessary distraction.

The Jets want Garrett Wilson to be happy, and there’s still a chance that happens in Florham Park. However, as time passes, the growing belief is that it’s only a matter of time before he requests a trade. What happens next is anyone’s guess.

  • Quinn Ewers Projected to Replace $112 Million QB in Latest NFL Mock Draft

Quinn Ewers Projected to Replace $112 Million QB in Latest NFL Mock Draft

A Super Bowl champion will be crowned on Sunday, when the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will face off in New Orleans.

While those two teams are locked in on being the final team standing, the other 30 teams across the league are in draft mode. This year’s draft, in particular, poses an interesting challenge for the teams needing a quarterback.

Unlike last year’s, which saw six signal-callers go in round one, this year’s class is viewed as having less star power. However, the free agency market also isn’t anything to write home about either, which means teams may take a chance on a quarterback in the draft.

Someone who could benefit from both of these scenarios is Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who, in ESPN’s latest NFL mock draft, went early in the second round at pick No. 42. Matt Miller tabbed him as a possible option for the New York Jets, who could be hoping to replace Aaron Rodgers.

“It will be fascinating to watch Ewers’ predraft process, and a strong combine could boost him into Round 1,” wrote Miller. “The Jets need an heir apparent to Aaron Rodgers and might need that successor to start immediately. Three seasons as a starter at Texas would have Ewers ready for that task. He threw for 3,472 yards, 31 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this past season.”

Rodgers inked a three-year deal worth over $112 million prior to 2023, but his tenure with the team has been far from pretty.

Through the first couple of weeks in the season, Ewers appeared to be on track to have a Heisman-caliber season, but an oblique injury sidelined him for two weeks. On top of that, he wasn’t fully healthy when he returned and it was obvious in his play.

Regardless, teams are still quite intrigued by the former No. 1 overall recruit, who has a chance to soar up draft boards with a strong pre-draft process.

Pitcher Dodgers Traded to Yankees Lands Deal With Angels

During the 2023-24 offseason, the New York Yankees traded for Victor Gonzalez and Jorbit Vivas of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Yankees sent back infielder Trey Sweeney, who was eventually dealt to the Detroit Tigers in the Jack Flaherty trade.

Gonzalez pitched in three big league seasons for the Dodgers before being traded to the Yankees. He had some decent moments, posting a 3.22 ERA and striking out 86 in 89 1/3 innings.

Searching for a new home, the left-hander found a deal.

According to MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco, Gonzalez has signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Angels.

The Angels have plenty of work to do to be a team with any sort of chance in the American League West, but the 29-year-old could be a potential reliever they look to during the campaign if he gets called up.

In 2024, he posted a 3.86 ERA for New York in 23 1/3 innings. His strikeout stuff was down, finishing with just 11, but he was able to limit runs.

If there’s reason to be concerned about Gonzalez getting a chance, his walk and FIP numbers haven’t been great. He walked 13 for the Yankees last season and threw to the likes of a 5.95 FIP.

Saints involved in two trade proposals that would reshape the NFL

Rob Gronkowski is excited the Patriots are hiring Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator

Rebuilds typically lead to an exodus of veteran players as the team gets younger. As the New Orleans Saints begin their rebuild, reload or whatever they want to call it, they too will get younger.

Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport saw two Saints veterans as bargaining chips. He cooked up six trades that could reshape the league, and New Orleans was involved with two of them. Davenport had the Saints sending two players to the AFC North: Derek Carr to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tyrann Mathieu to the Baltimore Ravens.

Carr to the Steelers would probably make the fans in black and yellow pretty upset and fans donning the black and gold may rejoice. Carr would feel very similar to the acquisition of Russell Wilson. He’s been discussed already as a possible trade target for Pittsburgh.

While Davenport is right to say the Steelers showed they don’t need an elite quarterback to be competitive, their limitations on offense still showed. On the note of competitiveness, Davenport pointed out “the opportunity to play for a contender” could entice Carr to waive his no-trade clause.

Davenport pairs Mathieu with Baltimore to help a struggling pass defense. This trade may become less likely because the Ravens improved mightily after moving Hamilton to deep safety. It would allow Mathieu to play closer to the box, but Baltimore may not be in the market for safety help anymore.

But what would the Saints get out of this? In terms of draft picks, Davenport’s trades have New Orleans getting a fourth-round pick in 2025 and a conditional pick in 2026 for Carr, plus a fifth-round pick in 2025. As for the salary cap benefits? Trading Carr before June 1 saves the Saints $11.3 million. But trading Mathieu saves only $16,000. That’s it. The team would still be paying $11.3 million this year if they trade Mathieu before June 1. They might be better off holding onto him.

Barcelona already plotting summer move to sign “amazing” Crystal Palace ace

    .

As the January transfer window comes to a close, Barcelona have reportedly already set their sights on signing an in-form Crystal Palace star when the summer arrives

    Crystal Palace transfer news

The Eagles have done well to keep hold of their own star men in the last month whilst also welcoming additions themselves to hand Oliver Glasner a welcomed boost.

Having commenced the January transfer window by welcoming a young talent in Romain Esse – who scored on his debut against Brentford recently – Palace ended their window by welcoming an experienced defender in the form of Ben Chilwell.

The Chelsea defender comes in at the same time that those at Selhurst Park were reportedly forced to reject an offer of as much as £70m from Tottenham Hotspur for Marc Guehi.

After Chilwell: Crystal Palace now pushing for dream Chalobah replacement

Rejecting the offer with such little time remaining to find a viable replacement, Guehi may not be the only star man who Crystal Palace face a battle to keep when the summer arrives.

According to reports in Spain, Barcelona are now plotting a move to sign Jean-Philippe Mateta this summer and see the forward as a less complicated option on the spending front as well as one who could replace Robert Lewandowski.

Whether Crystal Palace agree with that verdict on the economical front remains to be seen, however, given that they remained unmoved by Spurs’ late big-money attempts to lure Guehi away from South London.

Should they remain just as stubborn in the face of Barcelona’s chase of Mateta, then Palace may yet keep hold of their star striker this summer.

“Amazing” Mateta is more important than ever

If Barcelona come calling this summer, then Palace should do everything in their power to turn the Spaniards down amid Metata’s growing importance. The 27-year-old is at the peak of his powers and last summer’s move to sign Eddie Nketiah seemingly only spurred him on to make the starting role his own and prove that he is the best option for Glasner at Selhurst Park.

After scoring twice in a 2-0 victory over Manchester United last time out, Mateta was at the centre of his Glasner’s praise. The Austrian told reporters: “We don’t always talk because he knows what we demand of him. With his two goals today, he is amazing in the box.

“He has the feeling that a number nine must have in the box. He makes so many runs where he doesn’t get the ball. You need to suffer as a striker because you make so many runs where you don’t get the ball. He gets the reward and it decides the game for us.”

With six goals in his last five Premier League games, Mateta is once again the man of the moment for Crystal Palace.

  • Chelsea could have signed Liam Delap in January if one thing happened, deadline day move got in the way

Chelsea could have signed Liam Delap in January if one thing happened, deadline day move got in the way

It was clear that a striker was high on the agenda for potential signings to be made by Chelsea in the January transfer window.

Nicolas Jackson is enduring a nightmare spell in front of goal right now, and the Blues have been crying out for another option to play up top.

One of the names linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge was Liam Delap, who is in the middle of a fine first season in the Premier League.

Liam Delap of Ipswich Town celebrates scoring his team’s first goal during the Premier League match between Ipswich Town FC and Southampton FC at P…

The Englishman is now level with Jackson for goals this season, and his individual statistics make for impressive reading.

Chelsea could have signed Liam Delap in January if Carney Chukwuemeka joined Ipswich Town

Chelsea are seen by many as the favourites to sign Delap in the summer, and will almost certainly return to the scene when the transfer window opens again.

However, there was actually a chance they could have moved forward with the addition last month, and it relied on Carney Chukwuemeka.

Simon Phillips stated that if the midfielder had joined Ipswich on loan, the Blues would have had a far bigger chance of signing Delap.

He said on his Substack: “Chelsea spoke to Ipswich at least three times asking for Liam Delap this window and also had open communications with his agent. Player was keen but would not actively push.

“They could have got him for around £50-£60m this window but the belief is that they have now laid down the foundations to get him much cheaper in the summer.

“If Carney Chukwuemeka agreed to a move to Ipswich and Chelsea could have agreed a fee, then this could have advanced.”

Ipswich reportedly asked about Chukwuemeka during the transfer window, however he ended up making a move to Borussia Dortmund for the rest of the campaign.

Chelsea’s striker options for this season

With no addition in January, it is expected faith is going to continue to be put into Jackson by Enzo Maresca.

Christopher Nkunku is another option after he didn’t get his expected January move, although the manager seems to rate him in a position behind the frontman.

Last night’s win over West Ham saw Marc Guiu introduced to the fray just a few minutes after half-time, and his impact on proceedings certainly suggested he has a role to play in the Premier League this season.

Former Texas and Washington wide receiver Johntay Cook II, the top available prospect in 247Sports’ Transfer Rankings, was arrested Tuesday on charges of property theft and interference of public duties, according to a listing in Tarrant County, Texas’ inmate database. Cook is currently being held at Lon Evans Correctional Center in Fort Worth.

Cook, a former top-40 prospect in the 2023 class out of DeSoto, Texas, spent the first two years of his career at the University of Texas. The Longhorns and Cook mutually parted ways midway through the 2024 season before he entered the transfer portal.

Cook initially transferred to and enrolled at Washington. At the time, he was the only wideout the Huskies signed via the transfer portal. But shortly after he arrived on campus, Cook and Washington coach Jedd Fisch made the decision to move on from one another in a meeting. Cook re-entered the transfer portal on Jan. 14.

He logged eight catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns in 2024 A majority of that work came in blowout wins against Colorado State and UTSA where he totaled six receptions for 91 yards, and he hauled in both of his scores against the Roadrunners. He also had 136 yards receiving as a true freshman in 2023.

Arsenal have received a boost in their bid to overturn their Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Newcastle United.

The Gunners are determined to win the competition, but they face a tough challenge as they need to overturn a 2-0 deficit to reach the final. Mikel Arteta’s side have shown resilience this season, and they certainly have the quality to complete a comeback. However, Newcastle have already proven themselves to be a formidable opponent, and their first-leg victory demonstrated that they are fearless, even against strong opposition.

The Magpies boast some of the best players in the Premier League, and with the second leg taking place at St James’ Park, they will have the advantage of playing in front of their home fans. The atmosphere at Newcastle’s ground is always intense, and it will take a top performance from Arsenal to come away with the result they need.

Despite this, Newcastle have been dealt a potential setback, as manager Eddie Howe has confirmed that key midfielder Joelinton might miss the game through injury. The Brazilian has been a crucial part of Newcastle’s midfield this season, bringing both physicality and energy to their play. If he is unavailable, it would be a significant loss for the hosts, as his presence in midfield helps them control matches.

Speaking about the situation, Howe said, as quoted by the Daily Mail:

“Joey had a knee brace on as a precaution. I would say he is a doubt, but we will give him every chance to be fit.

“Our centre midfield, we have good strength in depth – Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley and Joe Willock – they all bring something.”

Although Newcastle have other midfield options, the potential absence of Joelinton could weaken their side, giving Arsenal a better chance of taking control of the game. The Gunners will need to be at their best, but this injury news could be a factor that plays in their favour.

Arsenal must approach the match with confidence and belief that they can turn the tie around. They have already shown on several occasions this season that they can perform under pressure, and this will be another test of their character. With the right mentality and execution, Arteta’s men have what it takes to deliver a strong performance and book their place in the final.

  • Who wins Alabama’s wide-open quarterback competition in 2025?

Who wins Alabama’s wide-open quarterback competition in 2025?

Any quarterback’s dream growing up, beginning when they’re in Pop Warner trying to keep their helmet on their head and throw the football at the same time, is to win a national championship.

Alabama has been fortunate to have had a few of those QBs over the past 20 years – 6 in fact, capturing 6 titles in arguably the best run of college football history.

Greg McElroy. AJ McCarron, twice. Jake Coker. Jalen Hurts/Tua Tagovailoa. Mac Jones. All names writ in Crimson flame and whatnot. And no matter who is given the keys to run the Alabama offense, in any era, they are expected to be able to run said offense at a level of bringing the program a 19th national title.

Heading into the 2025 season, coach Kalen DeBoer’s second in Tuscaloosa, the “who will it be?” debate is undoubtedly the central talking point for a program that isn’t used to just a whole lot of indecision at any position.

The short answer is this: It will be 2022 5-star Ty Simpson, 2024 4-star Austin Mack or 5-star freshman Keelon Russell under center when Alabama straps on the pads against Florida State on Aug. 30 in Tallahassee.

But the long answer is way more complex – and theoretically could end up being “none of the above.”

Simpson seems to have the inside track to the starting spot vacated when Jalen Milroe declared for the NFL Draft. An incoming redshirt junior, Simpson arrived as the No. 4-rated QB in the 2022 class. He stuck with Alabama through the Nick Saban-to-DeBoer transition.

Simpson was Milroe’s primary backup for the past 2 seasons and has completed 29-of-50 passes for 381 yards over the past 3 years while adding 130 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. From the incumbent perspective, Simpson seems to be the guy – but he will certainly have stiff competition that is both known and unknown inside the QB room.

Hot on Simpson’s heels will be Mack, who along with Simpson is the lone returner in said QB room (Dylan Lonergan previously transferred to Boston College). A rising redshirt sophomore, Mack transferred to Alabama from Washington to follow DeBoer – he was a true freshman for the Huskies in DeBoer’s final season.

Although Mack only saw the field during blowout situations after Simpson and Lonergan got in last season, he didn’t spend all his time just holding a clipboard – instead playing an integral role on the scout team mimicking opposing QBs for the Tide defense.

An incoming freshman from Duncanville (Texas) High School. Russell was the nation’s 2nd-ranked overall prospect who was the Gatorade National Player of the Year and a MaxPreps All-American. All Russell did as a high school senior was complete 238-of-343 pass attempts for 4,177 yards with 55 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, and rush for 321 yards and 3 more TDs.

Russell graduated early from Duncanville and enrolled at Alabama in January, so he is eligible to begin spring practice with the rest of the Crimson Tide on March 3 – the first of a 15-workout stretch that will be a non-stop litmus test for all 3 signal-callers that culminates with A-Day on April 12.

The smart odds are on Simpson. Spending all of 2024 just a single Milroe misstep away from being “the man” was valuable experience, and having said full year absorbing the DeBoer offense is invaluable. The leap forward that Michael Penix Jr., made in his second season at Washington with DeBoer was gigantic, and if Simpson can turn in a similar evolution starting in March he will be the guy trusted with the football.

But Russell’s pure athleticism – which was on display as he rocketed up the recruiting charts from being an SMU commitment to Alabama signee during his senior season – simply cannot be ignored. At 6-3 and 175 pounds, Russell comes straight from the Tagovailoa mold of players who can break defenses both with his scrambling ability and arm talent.

Still, are 15 practices enough for a true freshman to grab the starting quarterback spot at Alabama? Raw talent is one thing, of course, but experience and familiarity matters. Adding weight would help, too. Russell is still 17 years old and likely still needing a map to get around the Capstone for classes. Yes, Ryan Williams was that age during his 2024 Hollywood star turn, but receivers only need to know their routes – not all the routes.

Simply put, this is Simpson’s job to lose. But all of Crimson Tide Nation doesn’t want him to just not lose it – but instead grab it with both hands and take the first steps toward adding his name alongside McElroy, McCarron, Coker, Hurts/Tagovailoa and Jones.
