Alabama A&M football linebacker from SoCal dies after head injury in game.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A football player from Southern California at Alabama A&M has passed away after suffering a head injury during an October game. Medrick Burnett Jr., 20, was in his first season as a linebacker when he was injured during the annual Magic City Classic against Alabama State University on October 26, as confirmed by the Jefferson County coroner in a statement released Friday. The coroner stated his official time of death as Wednesday evening.

The athletic department at Alabama A&M announced Burnett’s passing on Wednesday morning, but later issued a retraction, explaining that the initial report came from an immediate family member on Tuesday evening. Burnett, a redshirt freshman from Lakewood, California, joined Alabama A&M after transferring from Grambling State earlier in the summer. He appeared in seven games, recording five tackles, three of which were against Austin Peay State.
