Detroit Lions’ Morice Norris in Stable Condition After Ambulance Removal During Preseason Game

On August 8, 2025, a chilling moment unfolded in the NFL preseason as Detroit Lions safety Morice Norris Jr. suffered a serious head and neck injury during their matchup against the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta .

Early in the fourth quarter, with 14:50 remaining, Norris attempted a tackle on Falcons running back Nathan Carter. The collision saw Carter’s knee make contact with Norris’s head, leaving the 24-year-old momentarily immobile and immediately surrounded by medical personnel .

The severity of the incident quickly became evident as the medical team spent roughly twenty minutes on the field stabilizing Norris before placing him onto a backboard and loading him into an ambulance . During that time, players from both teams formed a circle at midfield, many joining in prayer—an emotional scene that transcended the sport itself .

Following this pause, the Falcons executed a single, symbolic snap before both teams essentially allowed the clock to run out in a solemn demonstration of unity . With 6:31 left, officials suspended the game altogether, a decision made in joint agreement by Lions coach Dan Campbell and Falcons coach Raheem Morris, who both emphasized that it simply “didn’t feel right” to continue playing under such circumstances .

Later that night, the Lions released an encouraging update: “Morice Norris is in stable condition and has feeling and movement in all his extremities. He will remain at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta overnight for observation” .

Coach Campbell, visibly shaken by the ordeal, called it “an eye-opener,” noting how it “puts things in perspective.” He found solace in the solidarity shown by players and staff, saying, “the silver lining is the brotherhood” as both teams rallied around one another during a moment of true humanity .

Quarterback Kyle Allen echoed the gravity of the situation, pointing out, “When it’s taking that long, with that many people and that many trainers around him, you’re just hoping for the best.” He added that no one on the sideline wanted to continue, and no one needed to be told—it was clear from their body language .

This incident wasn’t entirely without precedent. In August 2023, two preseason games were also halted due to frightening injuries—the Patriots–Packers game was suspended after Isaiah Bolden was carted off, and a Dolphins–Jaguars game ended early when Daewood Davis was injured. Both players were released from the hospital the following day .
