West Ham United Complete Surprise Signing of Rising Belgian Star

West Ham United have completed the signing of highly-rated Belgian midfielder Matteo De Smet from Genk in a deal that could rise to £24 million, according to sources close to the fictional transfer.

The 21-year-old has agreed a five-year contract with the Hammers after undergoing his medical in London earlier this week. West Ham are understood to have moved quickly to secure De Smet after several clubs from England, Germany and Italy expressed interest in the midfielder during the summer transfer window.

The deal is believed to include an initial fee of around £19 million, with a further £5 million potentially payable through performance-related bonuses. Genk will also reportedly receive a sell-on percentage if De Smet leaves West Ham in the future.

De Smet, who can operate as a central midfielder or in a more advanced role, emerged through Genk’s academy before making his senior debut at 18. Over the past two seasons, he has established himself as one of the Belgian club’s most important young players, attracting attention for his passing range, composure and ability to carry the ball through midfield.

West Ham’s recruitment team are believed to have monitored the youngster for more than a year before making their move.

The Hammers initially opened discussions with Genk earlier in the summer, but negotiations reportedly stalled over the Belgian club’s valuation. West Ham eventually returned with an improved offer after receiving encouragement from De Smet’s representatives that the player was keen on a move to the Premier League.

Speaking in a fictional statement following the completion of the transfer, De Smet said: “Joining West Ham is a huge step for me. I have watched the Premier League since I was a kid, so to finally have the opportunity to play here is something very special.

“I know the history of the club and how passionate the supporters are. I want to work hard, learn from the experienced players and hopefully give the fans some great memories.”

West Ham are understood to view De Smet as both a first-team option and a long-term investment. Club officials are particularly impressed by his ability to play under pressure, with scouts reportedly highlighting his decision-making and technical quality as two of his biggest strengths.

There is also confidence inside the club that the midfielder can adapt quickly to English football.

The move is expected to add further competition to West Ham’s midfield, with De Smet capable of playing alongside a deeper-lying midfielder or operating closer to the attacking players.

A source close to the fictional negotiations said: “West Ham were very clear about what they wanted. They had followed Matteo for a long time and believed this was the right moment to make the move.

“There were other clubs interested, but once West Ham explained their plans to him, he was convinced that London was the right destination.”

De Smet is expected to join his new teammates immediately and could make his unofficial debut during West Ham’s next pre-season fixture. The club are likely to take a cautious approach with the youngster, however, as he adjusts to the pace and physical demands of English football.

For West Ham, the signing represents another significant investment in a young player with potential to develop into a key member of the squad.

The Hammers have been keen to strengthen their midfield options and lower the average age of the squad, while also identifying players who could potentially become valuable assets in the future.

De Smet will wear the number 18 shirt at West Ham and is expected to be officially presented to supporters at the London Stadium before the club’s next home fixture.

While the transfer still needs to be viewed as fictional for storytelling purposes, the structure of the deal and the player’s profile have been designed to resemble the kind of Premier League transfer that could realistically dominate the headlines during a summer window.
