Awoniyi Bids Nottingham Forest Farewell Ahead of £17 Million Coventry Move

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi is set to bring his Nottingham Forest career to an end after receiving an emotional farewell from the club ahead of his proposed £17 million transfer to Premier League newcomers Coventry City.

The 29-year-old forward was given a guard of honour during Forest’s pre-season friendly against Stade Brest at the City Ground on Sunday, as players, staff and supporters showed their appreciation for his contribution to the club. Forest won the match 2–0.

Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022 for a reported £17.2 million, becoming the club’s record signing at the time. He went on to make 103 appearances for Forest, scoring 23 goals and providing six assists across his spell at the City Ground.

His time at Forest included several memorable moments, particularly during the club’s fight for Premier League survival. However, competition for places in the attacking department has increased, with Chris Wood, Igor Jesus, Dan Ndoye and Arnaud Kalimuendo among the options available to manager Oliver Glasner.

Coventry City, meanwhile, see Awoniyi as an important addition to their squad as they prepare for their return to the Premier League. The Sky Blues, managed by Frank Lampard, are expected to complete the deal before their opening league fixture against Arsenal on August 21.

For Awoniyi, the move represents an opportunity to begin a fresh chapter and potentially play a more prominent role at a club determined to establish itself in the Premier League.

His departure marks the end of an important period at Nottingham Forest, where he helped the club through some significant moments following their return to England’s top flight. Now, attention turns to Coventry, where the Nigerian international will be expected to bring his physical presence, experience and goalscoring ability to Lampard’s attack.

With the transfer reportedly worth around £17 million, Awoniyi’s next challenge promises to be another significant chapter in his Premier League career.
