Ipswich Town chairman Mark Ashton has shared his thoughts on Sam Morsy’s departure and Dara O’Shea replacing him as captain.
Ipswich Town chairman Mark Ashton admits the club were ‘sad’ to lose history-making captain Sam Morsy this summer.
The iconic skipper led the Blues to back-to-back promotions and started 31 games in the Premier League last season, but left the club to move to the Middle East and sign for Kuwait SC.
“We were sad to lose him this summer, but he and his family were offered a fantastic opportunity in Kuwait and we could not stand in his way.
“Sam will always be associated with the rebirth of this football club, and he will always be welcome back at Portman Road.”

Morsy’s successor as skipper is Irish defender Dara O’Shea, who joined Town from Burnley for £12m last summer.
O’Shea was one of the team’s most consistent performers last season, captaining the Blues on a number of occasions when Morsy was absent. He penned a new contract until 2030 this summer.
And Ashton insisted there is nobody better to lead the club in the wake of Morsy’s departure.
“At this football club in particular, the captaincy is not just a job that begins and ends with wearing the armband,” Ashton said.
“The captaincy is a leadership role within the club and the community and while he has big shoes to fill, we couldn’t have anybody better than Dara to do the job.
“He has made a fantastic impression on everyone over the year that he has been with us.”
