The soap began when Richardson was seen on a going-viral video assaulting her boyfriend, co-American sprinter Christian Coleman.

Reports from the Port of Seattle Police Department corroborated that Richardson was arrested and charged with fourth-degree domestic violence assault. She was later released as Coleman declined to charge.
Just days earlier, Richardson had withdrawn from the women’s 100m event of the USATF National Championships after clocking a 11.07-second second in her heat where she finished second.
She decided to compete in the women’s 200m event but didn’t qualify for the finals after finishing fourth in her heat.
“My truth will change history so leave me be,” Richardson shared on a cryptic social media post as cited by SportsKeeda.
Despite the controversy, Richardson kept going with her season. One week later, she was at the women’s 100m in the Silesia Diamond League but could only muster sixth place with a time of 11.05 seconds.
Though her performance cast further doubts on her fitness, Richardson remained upbeat in a post-race interview, claiming she was confident of reaching her peak towards later in the season.
Her persistence was paying off when she claimed her first podium result of 2025 at the Brussels Diamond League.

Racing in the women’s 100m, she clocked 11.08 seconds to finish third, a result that jeopardized further improvement as she further headed towards the World Athletics Championships.
During her sporting failure, Richardson took to social media to issue a public apology to Christian Coleman after the USATF Nationals.
She acknowledged that his impact was immense on her life and admitted that she acted due to unresolved trauma in her past.
“I apologize to Christian. He came into my life & gave me more than a relationship, but a more profound understanding of unconditional love from what I’ve read in my past. Due to past trauma and pain, I was closed off and blind to not only receive it but give it too. I love him, and to him I can’t apologize enough. My apology should be as loud as my actions, honestly louder,” she wrote.
