The last time Alabama replaced a legendary football coach, it took almost a decade for the program to return to a sense of normalcy. Bear Bryant retired and died and, in short order, all hell broke loose.
Ray Perkins, Bryant’s confrontational successor, tore down one of the Bear’s traditions after another, including his iconic practice field tower. Someone threw a brick through the office window of Bill Curry, the next mortal up after Perkins. Pat Dye won four straight Iron Bowls, and as a final insult, he dragged Alabama’s ass onto Auburn’s grass for the first time with the Tide kicking and screaming all the way to the Plains.
