Nottingham Forest’s £30m pursuit spells the end for a much-loved figure at the City Ground

It is set to be a summer of change at Nottingham Forest.

With the demands of the Europa Conference League next season, Nuno Espirito Santo needs to bring in reinforcements both to improve his starting XI, and to provide greater depth to the Forest first-team squad.

Igor Jesus’ move to the Reds looks to be a done deal, with official confirmation due to come after the Club World Cup.

The club are also interested in snatching a striker from their Premier League rivals, with that move likely to spell the end for one figure at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest’s interest in Yoane Wissa spells the end for Taiwo Awoniyi

After trying to sign Yoane Wissa in January, the Reds have revived their interest in the striker.

Forest have reportedly sent an offer for Wissa already this summer, who Brentford value at around £30m.

With the impending arrival of Igor Jesus, the pursuit of the DR Congo international means that Taiwo Awoniyi’s time at the club is likely coming to an end.

Indeed, Forest listened to offers for Awoniyi in January but ultimately decided to hold on to him after they couldn’t get the Wissa deal over the line.

Should the club be able to secure Wissa this time around, Awoniyi would almost certainly be able to leave in pursuit of more game time.

Comparing Taiwo Awoniyi and Yoane Wissa’s Premier League stats

Awoniyi has been at Nottingham Forest for three seasons now, the club having signed him after achieving promotion to the top-flight in 2022.

Since then, the 27-year-old has played 73 Premier League games for the Reds, scoring 17 goals.

By comparison, Yoane Wissa has played 137 games for Brentford following the Bees’ promotion from the Championship in 2021. In that time, he has scored 45 goals.

Wissa therefore presents as an upgrade on the Nigerian, and would undoubtedly help Forest push on from their strong campaign this term.

He would also likely push Chris Wood for the spot as Forest’s starting striker, being five years younger than the New Zealander and only scoring one goal less than him in the Premier League this season as well.
