Nottingham Forest Complete Surprise Signing of Rising Star Ethan Vale

Nottingham, England — October 4, 2026

Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of highly rated young midfielder Ethan Vale from Championship side Bristol City, in a move that could prove to be one of the most intriguing deals of the club’s season.

The 21-year-old has agreed a four-year contract at the City Ground after Forest moved quickly to secure his services following an impressive breakthrough campaign in the Championship. The transfer is understood to be worth an initial £11 million, with a further £4 million potentially due in performance-related bonuses.

Forest had been monitoring Vale for several months and reportedly stepped up their interest after a series of standout performances during the opening weeks of the season.

Vale, who can operate as a central midfielder or in a more advanced No. 8 role, is regarded as one of the most promising young English midfielders outside the Premier League. His ability to carry the ball through midfield, pick out forward passes and contribute defensively made him an attractive option for Forest’s recruitment team.

Speaking after completing his move, Vale said he was delighted to have the opportunity to join a club with Forest’s history.

“This is a massive moment for me and my family. Nottingham Forest is a club with an incredible history and passionate supporters. When I heard about the interest, I knew immediately that it was an opportunity I wanted to take.”

The midfielder admitted that the decision to leave Bristol City was difficult, but insisted he felt the move represented the right next step in his career.

“Bristol City gave me my chance and I will always be grateful for that. But I believe I am ready for a new challenge. I want to test myself at the highest level, learn from the players around me and help Forest achieve something special.”

Forest’s interest in Vale is understood to have intensified after scouts were impressed by his performances against several of the league’s strongest sides last season. His combination of energy, technical ability and composure reportedly convinced the club that he could develop into a Premier League-level midfielder.

One source close to the negotiations described Forest’s pursuit as “deliberate rather than rushed”, with discussions taking place over several weeks before an agreement was finally reached.

The transfer also fits Forest’s wider strategy of recruiting players who have significant room for development. Rather than simply adding an experienced player to the squad, the club sees Vale as someone who could potentially become an important first-team figure over the next few seasons.

Forest head coach Marcus Hargreaves welcomed the arrival and praised the youngster’s attitude.

“Ethan is exactly the type of player we want to bring into this football club. He’s hungry, technically very good and he understands the physical demands of English football. Most importantly, he wants to improve.”

Hargreaves added that supporters should not expect too much pressure to be placed on Vale immediately.

“He’s still a young player. We have to give him time, but we’re confident that he can make a big contribution.”

Vale is expected to join first-team training immediately and could be involved in Forest’s matchday squad as early as next weekend, depending on his fitness and registration.

The signing has already generated excitement among Forest supporters, particularly because the club reportedly beat competition from several other teams for the midfielder’s signature.

For Bristol City, the deal represents a significant financial return on a player who progressed through their youth system before establishing himself in the senior squad. The Championship club are also understood to have negotiated a future sell-on percentage as part of the agreement.

For Forest, however, the focus will be on what Vale can deliver on the pitch.

The club’s recruitment department believes his versatility could prove particularly valuable during a long Premier League campaign. Vale’s ability to play deeper, drive forward with the ball or support the attack gives Hargreaves several tactical options.

The new signing has already spoken about his ambitions at the City Ground.

“I want to win games, compete for places and eventually become a player the supporters can be proud of. I know there is pressure here because of the club’s history, but that’s something I’m excited about.”

With his transfer now completed, all eyes will turn to Vale’s first appearance in the famous Garibaldi red.

For Nottingham Forest, it is a calculated gamble on a young player with considerable potential. For Ethan Vale, it is the biggest opportunity of his career so far.

And if the club’s scouting department has got this one right, Forest supporters may soon be talking about their new midfielder as one of the most important signings of the season.
