Nigeria win 10th WAFCON as comeback stuns Morocco

In a dramatic and emotionally charged final, Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title with a stunning comeback victory over host nation Morocco. The clash, held in front of a packed stadium in Rabat, was a rollercoaster of tension, resilience, and sheer willpower, as the defending champions overturned a deficit to emerge victorious in extra time.

Nigeria’s journey to the final was not without its challenges. Injuries, suspensions, and intense matches had taken their toll, and many believed Morocco, buoyed by passionate home support and a wave of national momentum, might finally end the Super Falcons’ long reign. For much of the match, it looked like they might be right.

Morocco struck first midway through the first half, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to send the home crowd into raptures. Their high pressing and aggressive tactics disrupted Nigeria’s rhythm, and the Falcons struggled to create clear chances early on. The Atlas Lionesses looked sharper and more composed, seemingly feeding off the energy of their supporters and the historic opportunity to win their first WAFCON title.

However, champions find ways to rise under pressure—and Nigeria did just that. After regrouping during halftime, the Super Falcons returned with renewed focus and intensity. Veteran players like Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade led by example, pressing forward with urgency and purpose. The equalizer came just past the hour mark, when a brilliant move down the left flank ended with a composed finish, silencing the Moroccan crowd.

The turning point came late in the second half. Morocco, who had played a physical and high-energy game, began to show signs of fatigue. Nigeria, sensing vulnerability, pushed forward. A defensive error by the Moroccan backline allowed Nigeria to seize the lead, with a poacher’s finish inside the box setting the tone for an incredible comeback.

Despite Morocco’s best efforts in the closing minutes, Nigeria’s defense held firm. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made several crucial saves to keep the hosts at bay, while the Nigerian midfield tightened its grip. When the final whistle blew, the Super Falcons dropped to their knees in triumph, celebrating not just another title but one of their most hard-fought and emotionally satisfying victories to date.

The win marks Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title, further extending their dominance in African women’s football. It is a testament to their consistency, tactical adaptability, and never-say-die spirit. For head coach Randy Waldrum, the result was a validation of his squad’s depth and determination, especially considering the absence of some key players during the tournament.

As for Morocco, despite the heartbreak, their journey to the final was historic. They became the first North African team to reach a WAFCON final, and their performance throughout the tournament has earned them admiration and respect across the continent. The future looks bright for the Atlas Lionesses.

In the end, the 2025 WAFCON final will be remembered as a classic—an emotional spectacle that showcased the passion, quality, and rising standards of women’s football in Africa. And once again, Nigeria stood tall at the summit, champions

of the continent.
