Kieran McKenna says the final week of the transfer window is important – but other things will determine if Ipswich Town are successful
Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna accepts that the final week of the transfer window will have a part to play in the success of the season – but insists the key lies elsewhere.
The Blues’ manager admitted last week that there has been more change in Suffolk this summer than he expected or hoped for, and spoke of having to build a new team in the wake of Saturday’s defeat at Preston.
With less than a week left in the summer window, which shuts at 7pm on Monday, September 1st, it appears that Town still have plenty of holes of fill.

But, asked how important the final days of the window are in the context of having a successful season, McKenna said: “The reality is they are important, but it’s not where my focus is.
“As a manager you always have to focus on the players that you have and not what may or may not come in the door, or somebody who might not stay.
“You can pin all your hope on signing somebody for a certain position and that will solve everything or improve us greatly… but that player can get injured on the first day.”

The Town boss insisted: “What really underpins success, and has really underpinned our success, has been culture, work ethic, it’s been the day to day processes here, pushing to get better every day.
“Those are the things that underpin it. Of course to be successful, and end the season as we want, there’s a certain talent level that you need, especially when you’re going into the season as a team that teams are going to want to beat, you need a certain level of depth to be successful over 46 games in this division.
“You need a certain level of physicality, experience, you need to have all those ingredients.
“But at the end of the day, what’s going to make you successful isn’t whether we bring in one player or four players in the next week, or whether we lose one player or no player or two players, it’s going to be culture, how we work, how we push and we do that together.
“So that’s where my focus is. Hopefully we have a good last week of the window – but it’s all the other stuff which is going to make us successful.”
