Ipswich Town: Players who must step up in 2026 promotion push

Ipswich Town’s ambitions for the 2026 season are clear. After laying strong foundations under Kieran McKenna, the next campaign must be about turning potential into promotion. Whether Ipswich are chasing automatic places or bracing themselves for the lottery of the play-offs, success will hinge on several key players raising their level when it matters most.

At the top of that list is Conor Chaplin. Few players embody Ipswich’s attacking identity better, but consistency has occasionally been an issue. Chaplin’s movement between the lines remains excellent, yet the promotion push demands more decisive moments — goals in tight matches, assists when defences sit deep, and leadership in the final third. If Chaplin can rediscover the ruthless edge that made him so effective during Ipswich’s League One title-winning season, he could be the difference-maker.

In midfield, Massimo Luongo has the experience and composure to control high-pressure games, but injuries and rotation have limited his influence at times. With Ipswich likely to face opponents happy to concede possession and frustrate, Luongo’s ability to dictate tempo, break lines with his passing and shield the back four will be vital. A fully fit Luongo stepping up as the midfield general could elevate the entire side.

Defensively, Jacob Greaves is a player with huge upside. The centre-back has shown flashes of dominance in aerial duels and comfort on the ball, yet promotion sides demand near-perfection at the back. Greaves must continue improving his concentration and decision-making, particularly against experienced Championship forwards. If he can turn promise into reliability, Ipswich’s defensive unit will look far more secure.

Another name under scrutiny is Leif Davis. The left-back’s attacking output has been one of Ipswich’s biggest strengths, but with expectations rising, his defensive responsibilities will come under greater focus. Opponents will increasingly target the space behind him, making positional discipline and recovery runs crucial. If Davis can balance his attacking instincts with defensive solidity, he remains one of the club’s most potent weapons.

Up front, George Hirst faces a defining year. Ipswich need a striker who can convert pressure into points — someone who thrives in physical battles and finishes half-chances. Hirst’s work rate is rarely in doubt, but goals will ultimately define his contribution. A 15–20 goal season from the number nine would dramatically strengthen Ipswich’s promotion credentials.

Finally, Sam Morsy must continue to set the tone. As captain, his influence goes beyond tackles and interceptions. In a promotion race filled with setbacks and momentum swings, Morsy’s leadership, discipline and competitive edge will be invaluable. However, he must also manage his aggression, ensuring he is available for key fixtures rather than suspended.

Promotion campaigns are rarely about one standout star. They are built on reliable performers delivering week after week. For Ipswich Town, the 2026 push will depend on these players stepping up, embracing responsibility, and turning belief into results. If they do, Portman Road could once again be bracing itself for a season to remember.
