Ipswich Town: Kieran McKenna on Conor Chaplin and Sam Morsy

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has once again heaped praise on two of his most influential players, Conor Chaplin and captain Sam Morsy, highlighting their importance to the team’s impressive start to the season. The Tractor Boys, who have taken the Championship by storm since their promotion, have shown that they can compete with the very best, and McKenna credits much of that success to the leadership, mentality, and consistency of his senior players.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Ipswich’s next fixture, McKenna was keen to underline the roles both Chaplin and Morsy have played — not just on the pitch, but behind the scenes at the club’s training ground. “Conor and Sam set the tone for everything we do,” McKenna said. “Their professionalism, work rate, and commitment to improvement have been exemplary, and they drive the standards for the whole squad.”

Chaplin, who was Ipswich’s top scorer during their promotion campaign, has continued to be a reliable source of goals and creativity. McKenna described him as “a manager’s dream,” praising his willingness to adapt his game to suit the needs of the team. “Conor is such a clever footballer,” he said. “He finds spaces that others don’t see, and he has that knack for scoring important goals. But what often goes unnoticed is his defensive work — the pressing, the tracking back — he buys into everything we’re trying to do.”

Equally significant has been the influence of Morsy, who has captained the side with distinction. The Egyptian midfielder has been a consistent presence at the heart of Ipswich’s midfield, combining tough tackling with excellent distribution. McKenna hailed his leadership qualities, describing him as “the glue that holds everything together.”

“Sam is a fantastic leader,” McKenna explained. “He is vocal, he demands the best from everyone, and he sets an example with his performances every week. He gives us balance in midfield, breaks up play, and gets us moving forward quickly. But beyond the technical and tactical side, he has a big impact in the dressing room. Young players look up to him, and he is always willing to put an arm around someone or have those difficult conversations when they’re needed.”

McKenna also stressed that the contributions of players like Chaplin and Morsy are vital if Ipswich are to maintain their momentum in a highly competitive Championship. “It’s a long season,” he said. “There will be ups and downs, but having experienced and driven individuals like these two gives me confidence that we can stay on track. They hold themselves and others accountable, which is a big reason why we’ve been so consistent.”

As Ipswich prepare for their next challenge, fans will no doubt take comfort in knowing that the spine of their team is not only talented but also mentally strong. With Chaplin continuing to deliver goals and Morsy marshalling the midfield with authority, Kieran McKenna’s side will believe they have the leadership needed to push for a top-six finish — and perhaps even dream of back-to-back promotions.
