Ipswich Town 3–1 Sheffield Wednesday: Alex Jones’ player ratings

Ipswich Town continued their impressive push at the top end of the Championship with a commanding 3–1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road. Kieran McKenna’s side once again showed their attacking quality, intensity out of possession and growing maturity, brushing aside a Wednesday team still rooted near the bottom of the table. From the first whistle to the final stages, Ipswich looked sharper, more confident and far more cohesive. Here is how Alex Jones rated the performances of the Ipswich players on the night.

Václav Hladký – 6.5/10
The Ipswich goalkeeper had a relatively quiet evening, with Sheffield Wednesday offering little sustained pressure. He could do little about the goal conceded and dealt confidently with crosses and loose balls. Solid rather than spectacular.

Axel Tuanzebe – 7/10
A strong showing at right-back. Tuanzebe defended well one-on-one and provided support going forward without overcommitting. His physicality helped nullify Wednesday’s wide threat and he looked increasingly comfortable as the game progressed.

Luke Woolfenden – 7.5/10
Another assured display from Woolfenden. Calm in possession and alert defensively, he read the game well and made several key interceptions. His composure at the back helped Ipswich control the tempo for long periods.

Cameron Burgess – 7/10
Burgess was dominant in the air and aggressive when stepping out of defence. He kept the Wednesday forwards quiet for most of the match and showed good awareness when Ipswich were briefly put under pressure.

Leif Davis – 8/10
Davis continues to be one of Ipswich’s standout performers. His energy down the left flank was relentless, combining defensive discipline with attacking intent. He was heavily involved in creating chances and stretched Wednesday throughout.

Sam Morsy – 7.5/10
The captain led by example in midfield. Morsy broke up play, pressed aggressively and set the tone with his intensity. His leadership was evident, particularly when Ipswich needed to regain control after conceding.

Massimo Luongo – 7/10
Luongo provided balance alongside Morsy, recycling possession efficiently and offering protection to the back four. While not the most eye-catching display, his contribution was vital to Ipswich’s control of the game.

Conor Chaplin – 8/10
Chaplin was lively between the lines and constantly looked to make things happen. His movement caused problems for the Wednesday defence and he played a key role in Ipswich’s attacking fluidity.

Omari Hutchinson – 8.5/10
A real threat all evening. Hutchinson’s pace, dribbling and directness unsettled Sheffield Wednesday from the outset. He capped his performance with a goal and was arguably Ipswich’s most dangerous player.

Nathan Broadhead – 7.5/10
Broadhead worked tirelessly and linked up well with his teammates. His movement opened up space and he contributed to Ipswich’s attacking rhythm, even when he wasn’t directly on the scoresheet.

George Hirst – 8/10
Hirst led the line superbly. Strong in the air, intelligent with his runs and clinical when chances arose. His physical presence gave Wednesday’s defenders a difficult night and he played a key part in the win.

Substitutes – 6.5/10
Those introduced off the bench helped see the game out professionally, maintaining Ipswich’s structure and energy levels.

Overall, it was a confident and controlled performance from Ipswich Town, underlining their promotion credentials and leaving Sheffield Wednesday with plenty to ponder.
