Hull City Complete Signing of Daniel Okafor in Ambitious Summer Move
Hull City have completed the signing of highly-rated midfielder Daniel Okafor from Belgian side KV Mechelen, with the 21-year-old putting pen to paper on a four-year contract at the MKM Stadium.
The Tigers are understood to have agreed a fee in the region of £3.2 million, with a further £800,000 potentially payable through performance-related bonuses. The deal also reportedly includes a sell-on clause, reflecting the club’s belief that Okafor could develop into a valuable first-team player over the coming seasons.
Okafor becomes Hull’s latest addition as the club looks to strengthen its squad and build a team capable of competing at the top end of the division.
Born in Antwerp to Nigerian parents, Okafor came through the youth system at Mechelen before making his senior debut at just 18. Over the past two seasons, he has established himself as one of the club’s most promising young players, making 57 appearances in all competitions and contributing six goals and nine assists.
Primarily a central midfielder, Okafor is comfortable operating as a No. 8 but can also play in a more advanced role. His ability to carry the ball through midfield, combined with his passing range and energy, is understood to have attracted Hull’s recruitment team.
Sources close to the deal claim Hull had been monitoring the youngster for several months before making their move.
The Tigers reportedly faced competition from clubs in England and the Netherlands, but Okafor was convinced by Hull’s plans for his development and the opportunity to play regular senior football in England.
Speaking after completing his move, Okafor said he was delighted to begin the next chapter of his career.
“I am very happy to be here. Hull City is a club with big ambitions and I could see from the conversations with the manager and the sporting department that they have a clear plan for me.
“I want to improve every day, play in front of the supporters and help the team achieve its targets. I know how competitive English football is, but that is exactly why I wanted this challenge.”
Hull’s manager is believed to have played a significant role in persuading Okafor to make the move, with the club presenting him with a clear pathway into the first-team setup rather than simply viewing him as a long-term project.
The midfielder is expected to join up with his new teammates immediately and could feature during Hull’s upcoming pre-season fixtures.
Club officials are understood to be particularly excited by Okafor’s physical profile. Standing at 6ft 1in, he combines strength with impressive mobility and has developed a reputation for covering large areas of the pitch.
His former coach at Mechelen described him as a player who “has not yet reached his ceiling”, suggesting Hull believe there is significant room for further development.
The signing also fits a wider recruitment strategy at the MKM Stadium, with the club increasingly looking towards younger players who can develop within the squad while retaining significant resale value.
Hull supporters have already begun discussing Okafor’s arrival on social media, with many fans eager to see the midfielder in action.
While expectations will naturally be high following the reported transfer fee, those close to the player insist Hull are signing him primarily for his potential rather than expecting him to immediately become the finished product.
For Okafor, however, the message is clear: the move to England represents an opportunity to take his career to another level.
And with Hull City hoping to make their mark at the top end of English football, the Tigers will be hoping their newest recruit can become one of the key players in the next chapter of the club’s story.
