He always thought my time would come’ – In-form Taylor on McKenna’s faith in him

Jack Taylor has impressed since coming into the Ipswich Town starting XI a couple of games ago
Jack Taylor has revealed that boss Kieran McKenna always said his time would come at Ipswich Town – and he’s delighted to be proving his gaffer right.

The 27-year-old says signing a new three-year deal at the club earlier this month ignited a change of mindset which has seen him win a starting place and impress in the Town engine room.

Asked if it was an easy decision to sign that new contract, he enthused: “Yeah, in the end it was, definitely.

“The way that the club’s treated me, when the gaffer said that we want to give you a new contract to stay at the club, it was sort of a no-brainer.

“They approached me, which was a really good feeling, especially at the time when I wasn’t playing a lot of games.

“But obviously since I signed the contract there’s been a change of mindset to be honest, and now with two wins on the bounce hopefully it wil

“It’s been in the works for a while, but these things take time. I didn’t want to force it my end, I knew it was there waiting. I thought it was the perfect time to sign, and I’m just delighted it happened.”

Did he consider having to leave to get regular minutes?

He insisted: “I was always transparent with the gaffer, I’d always go and see him – and he always wanted me to stay.

“He always thought my time would come, and it’s happening now. It did cross my mind (leaving), it’s football and you can end up anywhere, but I’m just delighted to get the contract sorted.”

Taylor has started Town’s last two games, forming a solid and effective partnership with Azor Matusiwa.

“We had two tough results against Boro and Charlton so I came in a bit fresh,” he reflected.

“I just thought that I’ll bring my leadership, my quality and my work ethic. Thankfully it’s brought us two wins and long may it continue.

“As a footballer in this division, you know games are going to come quick and fast towards Christmas. If you keep training right and doing the right things, your opportunity will come.”

He continued: “I see myself as a senior player trying to drive everything, especially from the middle of the park, getting the best out of everyone.”

Of Matusiwa, who has taken the place of iconic ex-skipper Sam Morsy, he said: “I’ve played with Az quite a few times now.

“We’ve got a good relationship on the pitch, we talk to each other quite a lot, and I think we complement each other’s styles quite well.

“He’s that sitting player that we needed in midfield obviously, with skip (Morsy) going.

“He’s filling his boots really well and he’s a good player, getting more consistent as the games are going on. I’m delighted for him.”

Next up for the midfield duo and Town are Watford tomorrow night – a chance for the Blues to win three games on the bounce for the first time since their Championship promotion season.

The Hornets head to Suffolk off the back of an impressive 3-0 win over early Championship promotion pushers Middlesbrough, but with the league’s worst away record (WO D2 L4).

So, what is Taylor expecting?

“They’re obviously a tough side,” he said. “They got a good result on Saturday so it’ll be another tough game on Tuesday coming to our place.

“We’re going to try and make it as hard as we can for them, we know they’ve got a dangerous threat, especially going forward, but like every game at Portman Road we want to bring out the best and hopefully get the three points.

He added: “It was a bad night (against Charlton) and we came away from what we were about as a team that night. It’s time to put things right.

“Three on the bounce in this league is massive, so hopefully it will be nine points out of three games.”

Town started the season as promotion favourites. After a spluttering start and a couple of bad results back-to-back, they’re now ninth with a game in hand and look to be finally clicking.

And Taylor believes the Blues can push towards the top of the table in the coming weeks and months.

“We’ve got the away win out the way now against QPR so that’s ticked off,” he insisted.

“To win two games (in a row) in this division is tough, I know the year that we got promoted we won loads, but it is tough in this division. You can come to places like QPR and draw or maybe lose the game.

“To take every game as it comes and keep training the way we are. With the squad that we’ve got and the rotation that we’ve got, every Tuesday-Saturday will be massive.

“You don’t want to get carried away looking at league tables and things like that, it’s still so early and there’s so many games to play. No-one’s really found the rhythm, I wouldn’t say yet.

“I think we’ve definitely got enough — we’ve got the manager and we’ve definitely got the squad to do it.

“Every year, anyone can beat anyone. We’ll just take every game as it comes and try and pick up as many points as we can.”
