A familiar face with strong ties to Wigan Warriors has decided to bring his Super League journey tob an end, closing the chapter on a career filled with sacrifice, hard work and memorable moments. Retirement is never an easy decision for any rugby league player, particularly for a front-row forward who has spent years putting his body on the line for teammates and supporters.
For props, the role often goes beyond statistics and headlines. They do much of the difficult work that allows the creative players around them to shine. Week after week they absorb tackles, fight for metres and take the physical punishment that comes with one of rugby league’s toughest positions.
Former Wigan prop Dom Crosby reflected on his departure from the game with a heartfelt message, speaking about what rugby had meant throughout his life and career. He explained that despite the challenges and setbacks he encountered, the sport had given him experiences beyond anything he imagined. Crosby said rugby had given him “everything” and spoke emotionally about the highs, lows and relationships built during his time in the sport.
The decision to walk away was influenced heavily by injuries. Professional rugby league can be brutal on the body and there comes a point where players must think beyond the next game or season. Many athletes reach a stage where health and long-term wellbeing become bigger priorities than extending a playing career by another year.
For Crosby and many others, injuries became an unfortunate part of the story. Recoveries, surgeries and rehabilitation sessions can be mentally exhausting as well as physically demanding. Players often spend months battling to return, only to find themselves facing fresh setbacks.
During his career, Crosby experienced success at some of the sport’s biggest clubs. Playing for Wigan represented a dream opportunity and gave him a chance to experience the pressure and excitement of representing one of rugby league’s most historic sides. Wigan’s culture has always been built around hard work, resilience and producing players willing to put the team first.
The emotional side of retirement is something many supporters rarely see. Fans watch the eighty minutes on the field, but behind every player there are years of dedication from family members, partners, coaches and friends. Crosby paid tribute to those around him who supported him during difficult periods and acknowledged the role they played in helping him continue.
Stepping away from Super League marks the end of one journey but often signals the beginning of another. Many former players remain involved in rugby through coaching, mentoring or work within the game.
Although one chapter closes, the memories remain. For a player who gave everything to the sport and wore the shirt with pride, perhaps there is no greater farewell message than the simple words: rugby gave him everything in return.
