Ferdinand is way off the mark with Crystal Palace ‘bully’ claim

Ferdinand thinks Palace took advantage of Guehiplaceholder

“Marc Guehi, a wonderful young, polite, respectable human being,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel. “I’m not saying Isak isn’t because he is, I heard he is. I’m not saying that, I’m just talking and telling you what I know because I know Marc Guehi.

“Beautiful young human being, dances and tip-toes around it, does things the right way, does things the way the media says it should be done, he’s quiet, unassuming, non-confrontational, the fans love this, this is what they respect, this is what they like.

“Transfer deadline day, he don’t even get a move, he’s stuck, he’s at Crystal Palace, they said ‘no, you’re not going’ because they knew he wasn’t going to fight, he’s not that way. So the club bully him, so the club say no, you’re not going anywhere, so we’re going to take that move out of your hands, the dream move to the Champions who could potentially win three or four trophies this year.”

Ferdinand paints a strange picture that almost suggests clubs make decisions like this on players based on their personalities, but with the Guehi situation and with what has happened with Alexander Isak, we all need a reality check when it comes to players, clubs and transfers.

Here is the bottom line. Clubs ruthlessly do what is best for them, players should do the same and we should stop pretending it’s going to be – or even should be – any other way. This is a business with millions of pounds at play, and it is never going to be any other way.

As far as Palace are concerned, they have Guehi under contract until next summer, and they cannot be expected to risk sacrificing their season just to appease a player’s desires – not to mention they would be aiding a Premier League rival along the way.

Now, by the same token, Guehi has every right to push for a transfer, albeit with the knowledge that the club do not have to grant his wish given his contract situation. A contract is a commitment to set amount of time, and both players and clubs know the term they are committing to. But by nature of how ruthless clubs are when it comes to business, we cannot be so quick to slander players like Isak who have forced their way out of the club.

In a worst case scenario, and let’s hope this never happens, Isak could go from being one of the best players in the world to having rotten luck with injuries, Newcastle would release him at the end of his contract, and Isak would have no future guarantee of income. Let’s not pretend it would be any other way.

There is no sentiment at play when it comes to football business, and for that reason, players must also do what is best for their careers. That means maximising their earnings and giving themselves the best chance of on-field success.

Palace have kept Guehi for selfish reasons and not to deny him a move. Now it’s over to the defender to see how he reacts. This is not bullying or anything close. It s football business, and with the understanding of the fact both parties will always do what is best for them, we should stop taking sides and see this business for what is is – ruthlessly selfish.
