Did the Washington Commanders have the best 2024 rookie class?

; Landover, Maryland, USA; Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels (5) celebrates with Commanders cornerback Mike Sainristil (0) after throwing a touchdown pass against the Philadelphia Eagles during the fourth quarter at Northwest Stadium.

    :

The Washington Commanders quickly vaulted up to the top of Super Bowl-contending teams in 2024 after years of mediocrity. After coming under new ownership, the brass in Washington made all the right moves this past offseason, from their hiring of Adam Peters, head coach Dan Quinn, and the rest of the coaching staff to landing their franchise quarterback in Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The combination of all this hit big as the Commanders finished the regular season with a 12-5 record before making a deep playoff run to the NFC Championship, something that hadn’t happened for the franchise in over 30 years.

When examining the Commanders’ 2024 roster, there were plenty of veterans that stood out for why the season was successful. However, when looking at the rookie classes across the league, NFL.com’s Gennaro Filice had the Commanders coming away with the top rookie draft class this season.

“Yes, Jayden Daniels is the biggest reason Washington tops this ranking, but he isn’t the only reason. In his first draft as a general manager, Adam Peters selected impact starters on both sides of the football, helping the Commanders go from 4-13 cellar-dwellers to 12-5 NFC Championship Game participants. That said, Peters’ first pick did provide an outsized benefit, giving Washington the league’s most valuable commodity: a true franchise quarterback.”

Jayden Daniels was spectacular in his first season in the league, immediately becoming one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the league – even drawing comparisons to former NFL MVP Lamar Jackson on his way to winning NFL Rookie of the Year.

One could have made the case for the Los Angeles Rams to be in the top spot due to what they were able to accomplish, but ultimately, Filice went with the Commanders as they hit multiple levels in the draft, with major contributions coming from them all including defensive back Mike Sainristil who showed a knack for being around the ball at all times.

“No moment is too big, no task too daunting — and that’s a quality reflected by courageous cover man Mike Sainristil. The 5-foot-9, 182-pounder was drafted to play nickel, but the Commanders’ perimeter cornerbacks couldn’t hold their own in the first two weeks of the season, so Washington sent Sainristil outside. The rookie answered the bell with aplomb, finishing the season with four interceptions, including two in Washington’s playoff upset of Detroit.”

Both Daniels and Sainristil were the stars of the Commanders’ draft this past season, but the likes of Jer’Zhan Newton, Luke McCaffrey, and Brandon Coleman, amongst others, saw valuable time throughout the year as the team asked for their young players to step up to reach the heights they did.

There is still much to be achieved by these Commanders, and while their future is undoubtedly bright, they will need these young players to improve and develop as they head into their second seasons with a Lombardi Trophy on their minds.

Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs Set to Make Baseball History on Opening Day 2025

It’s official: The pitching matchup between the Cubs and Dodgers will be Shota Imanaga and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The game will take place at the Tokyo Dome on March 18.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga (18) runs through drills during spring training camp on Feb 25.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga (18) runs through drills during spring training camp on Feb 25.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs are set to usher in the 2025 season on March 18-19 with a two-game series at the Tokyo Dome in Japan.

And now we know the pitching matchup for the Opening Day contest: The Dodgers will send Japanese righty Yoshinobu Yamamoto to the mound while the Cubs will pitch Japanese lefty Shota Imanaga.

That matchup is set to create history on multiple fronts, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com:

Yoshinobu Yamamoto vs Shota Imanaga in Game 1 in Japan will be:

    – the first matchup of Japanese-born SP in a regular-season MLB game at the Tokyo Dome

-the first matchup between Japanese-born SP in an Opening Day game

Yamamoto, 26, signed a 12-year deal with the Dodgers last offseason and promptly helped them win the World Series for the first time since 2020. Though he dealt with an injury that limited him to just 90.0 regular season innings, he went 7-2 with a 3.00 ERA. He also struck out 105 batters in those 90.0 innings, showing the kind of stuff that made him an ace in Japan.

Imanaga, 31, signed a more modest four-year deal with the Cubs last offseason, but he greatly outkicked that deal’s coverage by going 15-3 with a 2.91 ERA. He struck out 174 batters in 173.1 innings and earned an All-Star nod.

Furthermore, Imanaga finished fifth in the National League Cy Young voting.

The Asian connection doesn’t stop there, as Shohei Ohtani will be the DH for the Dodgers and Roki Sasaki will also take the mound for Los Angeles in the series.

DECISION TIME: Terry Francona of the Reds revealed his plan for former top prospect Matt McLain, who is coming back from injury.

HISTORIC HURLERS: Jacob deGrom, Chris Sale and Shane Bieber have each won Cy Young Awards in their careers. But they also have this in common.

TOP CANADIAN: Josh Naylor of the Diamondbacks was listed as the most influential Canadian in all of baseball by the Canadian Baseball Network. :

  • Lions attack interior offensive line in second Daniel Jeremiah mock draft

Lions attack interior offensive line in second Daniel Jeremiah mock draft

NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah released his second mock draft of this draft season. His mocks and insight are always intriguing because he mixes his thoughts on teams with what he’s hearing in the league.

In this case, he has the Lions adding depth, if not a potential starter up front. With the 28th pick, the Lions select Donovan Jackson, offensive guard, Ohio State. Jeremiah’s notes on this one are short, sweet and to the point. “Jackson would be a perfect replacement for Kevin Zeitler if the veteran departs in free agency.”

Even if the Lions are able to re-sign Zeitler, Jackson can compete with Graham Glasgow for the other guard spot. The Lions’ offensive line was among their top strengths last season. If the Philadelphia Eagles taught us anything, it’s that building through the trenches is a key component in competing for Super Bowls.

Jackson has experience at both tackle and guard, as he had to fill in for the injured Josh Simmons. Fortunately for the Lions, they wouldn’t need Jackson to play on the outside and guard is more his natural position, anyway. Getting a potential starter and keeping the offensive line a strength late in the first round would be a home run for the Lions in this draft.

  • Another Arsenal star set to be out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery – Just Arsenal News

Another Arsenal star set to be out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery – Just Arsenal News

Takehiro Tomiyasu has played just six minutes of football for Arsenal this season, and it now appears that will be his only contribution to the campaign. The defender has endured a torrid time with injuries in recent months, and despite his efforts to return to full fitness, setbacks have continued to plague him.

Earlier in the season, Tomiyasu underwent surgery, which allowed him to make a brief return to action. However, after playing just six competitive minutes, he did not react well to his time on the pitch and was sidelined once again. His struggle to regain full fitness has left Arsenal with no choice but to explore further medical options.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, the club have now decided that another surgery was necessary, and Tomiyasu has undergone the procedure in a bid to address his persistent injury issues. As a result, he is expected to miss the remainder of the season as he focuses on rehabilitation and recovery. The hope is that this latest intervention will allow him to return to the squad fully fit at the start of the next campain.

Tomiyasu has proven to be one of Arsenal’s strongest and most dependable defenders when available, but his injury troubles have severely limited his impact. His absence has been felt, and the club will be hoping this latest surgery provides a lasting solution to his ongoing fitness concerns.

It is crucial that he is given the time to recover properly, ensuring that when he does return, he is able to perform at his best without the risk of further setbacks. If everything goes to plan, Arsenal could have a fully fit Tomiyasu back in their squad next season, ready to contribute once again.

  • Badgers Name Marcus Sedberry New GM for 2025-26 Football Season

Badgers Name Marcus Sedberry New GM for 2025-26 Football Season

The Wisconsin football program has appointed Marcus Sedberry as the new general manager for the 2025-26 season. With three years of experience in Wisconsin football operations and prior experience at Baylor, Sedberry steps into the role after former GM Max Stienecker moved to USC. His background includes significant involvement in fundraising and strategic project management. Sedberry takes on leadership amidst challenges, including the team’s first missed bowl game since 2001 and a significant player turnover through the transfer portal.

    By the Numbers

23 players left Wisconsin during the recent transfer portal window.

30 new recruits, including high school players, are set to join the Badgers.

The Badgers have only one verbal commitment for the 2026 recruiting class.

Key period for scheduling visits and pursuing prospects is ongoing until April 16.

As Sedberry takes charge, he must focus on roster management and securing key recruits to rejuvenate the program. Building relationships with high school prospects and ensuring effective NIL deals will be critical for future success.

    Bottom Line

Marcus Sedberry’s experience and strategic oversight could be key in redirecting Wisconsin football towards success after a challenging season. His ability to attract talent will determine the team’s trajectory moving forward.

  • Lewis Hamilton’s 2025 Ferrari SF-25 revealed in SURPRISE launch

Lewis Hamilton’s 2025 Ferrari SF-25 revealed in SURPRISE launch

As Formula 1 wrapped up the F1 75 group launch, Ferrari surprised as they revealed the first renderings of the official 2025 car, the SF-25, ahead of Wednesday’s shakedown.

The team released several pictures of the 2025 car, Lewis Hamilton’s first-ever Ferrari machinery as the Briton has joined Charles Leclerc in a formidable line-up.

Ferrari: ‘Thousandths of a second’ will make the difference

But will it bring an end to Ferrari’s 18-year title drought?

Ferrari last won a Drivers’ Championship title in 2007 with Kimi Raikkonen, and while the Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel came close, the near misses have left Ferrari’s Tifosi hungry for more.

Many are predicting F1 2025 could finally be the year.

While the most striking aspect of the SF-25 is its HP-branded livery that features a prominent HP logo on the engine cover and a blue rear win, this year Ferrari have gone for a darker red with plenty of carbon fibre on display.

This year Ferrari have switched to a pull rod front suspension set-up, declaring it would ‘clean up the airflow around the car, while also giving greater scope for further aero development, which had been pretty much exhausted with the previous iteration’.

Designed to maximise the development potential of the car, Ferrari believe F1 2025 will be a season in which ‘thousandths of a second in lap time’ will make the difference.

Ferrari’s Technical Director of Chassis Loic Serra said: “The SF-25 is an evolution of the SF-24, which gave us an excellent starting point to work from. Having said that, we have worked hard, changing 99% of the car, evolving its architecture to maximise performance.

“The pull rod front suspension is only the most obvious of many significant changes.

“We can expect the coming season to be very closely contested, with outcomes decided by thousandths of a second. We are all set to give it our best shot to find those gains, even the marginal ones, that can make the difference. We are looking forward to being competitive right from the very first race.”

“The launch of a new car is a moment of great emotion and pride for the entire team,” added team boss Fred Vasseur. “The SF-25 is the result of months of intense work carried out with great dedication in Maranello, and we are excited to see the fruits of our efforts materialise and be ready to hit the track.”

“Last season saw us fighting for the Constructors’ title until the very last corner, and we are determined to build on that solid foundation with the goal of winning both championships. We have a new driver line-up, with Lewis joining Charles in the team, and we feel ready to take that step forward as a team to become the best.

“We are aware of the challenges ahead, but we are ready to give our best to compete at the highest level, also drawing strength from the passion and enthusiasm of our fans, who are an endless source of inspiration. Now it’s time to focus and let the track do the talking. I can’t wait for the season to begin.”

Ferrari are scheduled to put the first laps on the SF-25 in a shakedown at the Fiorano circuit on Wednesday morning, 9:30am sharp, with Leclerc covering the first laps before handing the car over to Hamilton in the afternoon.

The team-mates are each permitted to cover 100km as per Formula 1’s filming day regulations.

After the shakedown at Fiorano, Ferrari will next be action inBahrain, where the only pre-season test session will be held from 26 to 28 February.

  • 2027 Georgia DB prospect finds home with Alabama football: What he could bring to Tide

2027 Georgia DB prospect finds home with Alabama football: What he could bring to Tide

Alex Ward, a 2027 defensive back prospect from Marietta, Georgia, has committed to play football at Alabama.

Ward impressed Alabama coaches at a camp, even with a cast on his hand, and committed to the Crimson Tide during a game day visit.

Ward comes from a football family, with his older brother currently playing at Jackson State and another brother being a highly recruited receiver in the 2026 class.

His coaches believe he has the potential to be one of the best cornerbacks in the nation for his class, praising his maturity, athleticism, and football IQ.

Alex Ward only needed one hand to secure an Alabama football offer.

The 2027 Marietta, Georgia, defensive back had a torn tendon in his middle finger when he first camped in front of Alabama defensive backs coach Maurice Linguist in June. With a cast on one hand, and at times with that hand behind his back, Ward was still able to make a statement, even recording an interception during one-on-one drills.

That day was overwhelming, Ward remembered, getting an offer from the college football program he considered as a favorite even before his recruitment started.

“I was very happy, excited,” Ward told the Tuscaloosa News. “I cried when I got home.”

Months later, Ward was on the sideline at Bryant-Denny Stadium before Alabama faced Mercer, his first gameday experience. It felt like home, he said, and was enough for him to pull Linguist aside and commit to the Crimson Tide’s 2027 class on the spot.

“The opportunity felt like family just accepting me,” Ward said.

Ward knows what he is getting into when it comes to Alabama.

The Crimson Tide plays hard and is filled with “winners” and competitors. he said. Alabama knows how to develop its players, calling the program’s main goal to “get everybody to the next level.”

None of that is new to Ward. It’s the kind of football Ward had always known.

Alex Ward path to Alabama football

Mar 21, 2024; Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA; Alabama co-defensive coordinator Maurice Linguist directs players during practice at the University Alabama Thursday.

In the Ward family, college football is a rite of passage.

Alex Ward is the middle child. His oldest brother, Jace, plays linebacker for Jackson State. His older brother, Christian, is going through the recruiting process as a 2026 four-star receiver, holding offers from programs like Alabama, LSU and Georgia.

Alex Ward, like his brothers, was born with a football placed in his hands by his father, Jasen, who saw a future defensive back and wide receiver almost immediately with the good hands, the quick twitch and a strong, muscular build.

As his son grew, Jasen said, Alex became a student of football, one who studies the tendencies of each player he’s assigned to cover.

“I taught him things like, ‘Hey, first you got to be the best kid in the neighborhood. Then you got to be the best kid in your area. Then you work your way up to being the best kid in the region and in the country,’” Jasen Ward said. “So that’s just been kind of his path and goal, to show everybody that he’s the best at what he does, and he’s passionate about it. And that God’s kind of given him this gift to play football.”

By the time Alex Ward came to Walton High School, he oozed maturity, pairing length and athleticism with instinctiveness, IQ and a seriousness many high school football players did not share.

“A lot of kids that age can’t turn it on and turn it off,” Walton football recruiting coordinator Monty Bumper said. “He can actually turn it on and turn it off.”

Ward learned from the best, calling former NFL Pro Bowl cornerback Josh Norman his mentor. It was Norman who taught the 2027 prospect how important the mental side of football is, especially as a defensive back.

“Everybody would always think, ‘Oh you got to be the fastest, you got to be the strongest’ to get somewhere. … It’s really mental,” Ward said. “It’s the mental part of the game because the older you get, everybody (is) going to be fast, everybody (is) going to be strong. So you got to understand the mental part now so you’ll be ahead of everybody.”

Could Alex Ward be the “best cornerback’ in 2027 recruiting class?

Walton football coach Daniel Brunner views Ward as a prospect who is already ahead of everybody.

As a defensive back, Brunner said Ward doesn’t fit the reputation of being a wide receiver who “can’t catch.”

Ward, who plays both ways at Walton, can turn pass breakups into interceptions, someone Brunner considers as one of the best cover cornerbacks in the country.

“It’s nice to have him out there because you know that side of the field can be pretty much eliminated,” Brunner said. “He’s got a chance to be the best cornerback in the nation in his class. I truly believe that.”

Alabama believes that, with its coaches telling Brunner that the “sky’s the limit” for a prospect like Ward, someone who is “not even close” to what he could become at the next level.

For Ward, that development is where Linguist comes in.

“He’s a great DB coach,” Ward said. “He’s just honest with you up front. Not going to lie to you in your face. He’s going to push you and just tell you and ask you if you want to get here, what can I do to help you get there?”

That’s what football is to Ward: a stage where he can showcase his talent, to show who he is as a person both on and off the field. It’s why he chose to commit to Alabama so early, standing on the sideline with Linguist before the Mercer game.

Brunner shares Alabama’s excitement for what Ward has been able to do. And Brunner knows what Ward has the capability of doing with two seasons left at Walton.

“I just hope we can get him as far down this road as we possibly can before he gets to (Alabama),” Brunner said. “Because, if that’s the case, he can have a chance to play as a freshman.”

  • Tottenham and Palace tipped to sign Championship star as “huge bid” claim made

Tottenham and Palace tipped to sign Championship star as “huge bid” claim made

They sit 12th in the Premier League, level on points with 13th placed Crystal Palace, who lost 2-1 to Everton over the weekend. They are set to battle Spurs for a highly-rated Championship midfielder.

Tottenham and Palace set to bid for Jobe Bellingham

Jobe Bellingham – who is the brother of England and Real Madrid star Jude – has impressed in the Championship this season for Sunderland, making 29 appearances, with four goals and three assists. He has helped Regis Le Bris’ side to fourth in the league after 33 games.

In the January transfer window, reports emerged linking Bellingham to several Premier League clubs including Tottenham, Palace and Arsenal, suggesting that the trio could make a move for him in the summer transfer window. Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown believes that Sunderland will listen to offers for the 19-year-old, and that if a big enough bid is made, the likes of Spurs could sign him in summer.

He told Football Insider: “I think Sunderland would let him go if they got a good price for him. Especially if they don’t get promoted this season, they’re going to listen to offers.

“Crystal Palace and Tottenham have had scouts watching him this season so they’ll be two of the teams in the running if he is going to leave. So it’ll be up to them to assess whether he’s ready to make that jump. From a Sunderland point of view, knowing the way the owners want to operate, I think if they get a huge bid for him then they’ll let him go.”

Sunderland are believed to value Bellingham at around the £30m mark, but come the end of the season, the Black Cats could place a much bigger price tag on him – should they get promoted.

How would Bellingham fit at Tottenham or Palace?

Spurs’ mantra when signing players over the past few years, is to develop them into first team stars, Bellingham could be the latest such player. In midfield, Postecoglou currently plays the likes of Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Bergvall, James Maddison and Yves Bissouma. Bellingham would have a lot of competition initially, but he could gradually work his way into the team.

He can play both as a more attacking midfielder and a defensive one, which could be very beneficial for a Tottenham side who have struggled for depth this season due to their injury problems.

Meanwhile, if he was to join Crystal Palace, it would be easier for Bellingham to get into the first team, as he would be competing with the likes of Will Hughes, Jefferson Lerma, Adam Wharton and Daichi Kamada.

Not only could Bellingham get into the team immediately, but he could also become the main star midfielder as Adam Wharton has recently been subject to reports linking him with a move to Tottenham. If Wharton was to leave Selhurst Park, they would need to find a replacement which could come in the form of Bellingham.

GdS: Predicted XIs for Milan vs. Feyenoord – Leao and Felix start but Pulisic on bench

AC Milan know that they need to win tonight against Feyenoord to have a chance of progressing to the last 16 of the Champions League, meaning the pressure is on.

The Rossoneri were simply not at the races in Rotterdam and failed to break down their resilient hosts. The only goal of the game came in the opening three minutes through Igor Paixao and it means that Milan will need to come from behind to progress for the first time since 2007.

There are a number of absences to deal with as Alessandro Florenzi, Emerson Royal and Ruben Loftus-Cheek remain injured, while Luka Jovic, Alex Jimenez, Warren Bondo and Riccardo Sottil are not in the UEFA squad list.

Today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport predicts a 4-2-3-1 system from Sergio Conceicao with a back four of Kyle Walker, Fikayo Tomori, Strahinja Pavlovic and Theo Hernandez in front of Mike Maignan.

Youssouf Fofana and Tijjani Reijnders are down as the double pivot, with Joao Felix operating ahead of them in the attacking midfielder role.

Yunus Musah is down as the right winger and Rafael Leao on the opposite flank supporting the striker Santiago Gimenez. It could well be a slightly different system in and out of possession, though.

Predicted Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Walker, Tomori, Pavlovic, Theo Hernandez; Fofana, Reijnders; Musah, Joao Felix, Leao; Gimenez.

Predicted Feyenoord XI (4-3-3): Wellenreuther; Read, Beelen, Hancko, Smal; Moder, Milambo, Bueno; Moussa, Carranza, Paixao.
