Suffolk secures £3.7m government funding for active travel schemes

Suffolk County Council has been awarded £3.7 million to improve cycling, walking and accessibility infrastructure across the county.

Why it matters: The funding will support projects to make travel cleaner, safer and more accessible throughout Suffolk, building on previous successful schemes like those at Ipswich Waterfront.

By the numbers: The funding comprises:

    • £0.9 million from Round 5 of the Active Travel Fund
    • £2.8 million from the Consolidated Active Travel Fund
    Ipswich Waterfront Suffolk County Council

The details: The money can be used for multiple infrastructure improvements including:

    • Better footpaths and crossing points
    • Maintenance of existing walking and cycling infrastructure
    • Improved cycle routes
    • Traffic calming measures
    • Improvements to the Public Rights of Way network
    • Rail station access improvements

What they’re saying: “Such schemes are important to the county, making it easier, cleaner and safer for people to get around,” said Councillor Chris Chambers, Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport Strategy, Planning and Waste.

“Cycling, walking and wheeling can help improve our health, whilst also reducing vehicle emissions to improve air quality and protect Suffolk’s environment,” he added.

What’s next: With funding now confirmed, the county council is considering suitable local projects, which will be announced in the coming months.

Crafters and artists called to help transform The Walk for spring market

We publish the stories that matter and champion everything that’s good about our town – without the ads, popups or tracking13 February, 2025

Local creatives are being sought to contribute handmade bunting and stalls for The Walk’s upcoming spring market.

Why it matters: The market, scheduled for Sunday, 13 April, aims to build on December’s successful Christmas market, that saw thousands of shoppers visit the pretty thoroughfare, and continue revitalising one of Ipswich’s prettiest thoroughfares.

    • Organisers Threads for All are seeking makers, artists and crafts people to participate as stallholders.
    • Creatives are also being called upon to create bunting to make the area “fun and colourful”.
    • The event follows December’s Christmas market which brought together 20 local traders, offering craft beer, preserves, fashion, jewellery, arts and crafts.

Behind the initiative: The market is being organised by Will and Jenny, owners of Threads for All, who opened their independent fashion and homeware store in The Walk in late summer 2024.

What they’re saying: “We will try to make it bigger and better than the very successful Christmas one,” said Will Hamer, co-founder of Threads for All.

What’s next: Anyone interested in participating can contact Threads for All through their social media channelswebsite, or visit the shop directly.

The bottom line: Following the successful Christmas market that showcased The Walk’s potential, organisers are now calling on the local creative community to help deliver an even more ambitious spring event.

  • West Ham predicted XI v Brentford: Irving axed in two changes

West Ham predicted XI v Brentford: Irving axed in two changes

West Ham will be looking to return to winning ways against Brentford after their loss to Chelsea.

Graham Potter has taken over from Julen Lopetegui and has wasted little time in adopting changes to the system at the Hammers.

There were some positives to take from the 2-1 loss to Chelsea last week and Potter will be hoping that his side can win against the Bees on Sunday, 15 February at the London Stadium.

Lucas Paqueta and Edson Alvarez could make their return to the playing eleven

Andy Irving started in the middle of the park for the Hammers against Chelsea while Carlos Soler played in the attacking position behind Jarrod Bowen.

However, Potter is set to receive an injury boost with both Lucas Paqueta and Edson Alvarez expected to be fit for the game over the weekend. (The Sun print edition on 13 February)

    MORE WEST HAM STORIES

This could see Alvarez coming in for Irving, offering much-needed solidity in midfield alongside Tomas Soucek.

The other change would be Paqueta coming in with Soler making way for the ever-talented Brazilian.

West Ham go into the Brentford clash as favourites

To secure a victory against Brentford over the weekend, the Hammers will need to focus on key areas.

They must capitalise on their home advantage at the London Stadium by leveraging the support of their fans to boost morale and performance.

Defensively, they should aim to neutralise Brentford’s threats, particularly from set pieces and counter-attacks, as the Bees have a reputation for being tactically astute under Thomas Frank.

Potter’s side needs to ensure that their backline remains organised and communicative.

In the final third, they should exploit Brentford’s defensive vulnerabilities through quick, incisive passing and by utilising the creativity and goal-scoring prowess of players like Bowen and Mohammed Kudus.

The return of key players like Paqueta and Alvarez could provide the midfield solidity and attacking flair necessary.

Moreover, maintaining possession to control the game’s tempo will be crucial, aiming to wear down Brentford before launching decisive strikes.

     League.

It’s also important that the Irons manage the game’s physicality and intensity to avoid unnecessary bookings or fatigue.

Hamilton has just done something at Ferrari that Schumacher was ‘never liked’ for avoiding

Lewis Hamilton’s arrival and subsequent adaptation to driving for Ferrari has been one of the biggest stories of the Formula 1 off-season.

Thousands turned up to witness Hamilton’s first run at Fiorano and he will be at the centre of everyone’s attention when he rocks up in Bahrain for pre-season testing.

Hamilton will have to share the three days of running at the Bahrain International Circuit with new Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc.

That will likely put him on the back foot, to begin with this season as although both drivers will have equal time in Ferrari’s 2025 car, Leclerc has much more experience when it comes to working with the Italian team.

However, one thing that Hamilton can do at Maranello is get as accustomed as possible to working with his new colleagues.

After 12 seasons with Mercedes, he would have known all the smallest intricacies of that organisation.

Ferrari is a completely new environment for the 40-year-old and not only that, he also has to win over the infamous hard-to-please Tifosi.

Michael Schumacher is the most successful driver in Ferrari’s history, and while he’s revered in Maranello now, that wasn’t always the case.

Hamilton has just done something while speaking to Ferrari’s employees that will help the team’s fans warm to him even faster than they already have done after his brief appearances in red over the past few weeks.

Lewis Hamilton gives speech in Italian to Ferrari fans ahead of the 2025 F1 season

Video footage emerged of Hamilton reading a speech off his phone in Italian to Ferrari staff, receiving plenty of encouragement from the crowd as he did so.

A report from Autoracer shared exactly what he said, with the seven-time world champion’s message translated as: “Thank you all for your warm welcome.

“I am happy to begin this new adventure with you, in Ferrari.

“It has always been my dream to be part of this team. I can’t wait to work with you. Thank you.”

Lewis Hamilton drives on the track during the first day of tests as a Scuderia Ferrari F1 driver at the Fiorano Circuit in Maranello, Italy, on Jan…

Journalist Jose M. Zapico explained on social media that this was something that Schumacher never did initially during his time with Ferrari.

He said: “Schumacher was never liked in Italy. He was more appreciated after his departure from Ferrari, he was called ‘The German’ and ‘Sochmacher’, which is a very ugly thing to say.

“He was criticised for never speaking a word of Italian. Lewis, he has taken the trouble to at least read it on his iPhone.”

What was Michael Schumacher’s reputation like at Ferrari at the start of his spell with the team?

A report from ESPN back in 2001 gives more details about the feeling Ferrari fans had for Schumacher just after he had won his first title with the team.

At the unveiling of that season’s car, Schumacher defended himself and said: “I am not a movie star, either things come naturally or they don’t. You can’t “learn” emotions.

He had been accused of being less emotional towards Ferrari than teammate Rubens Barrichello and the report from ESPN said that Schumacher had previously been seen as ‘cold and aloof’ before crying on the podium at Monza the previous season.

Schumacher admitted that he had always felt emotions towards Ferrari adding, “even if they were not always visible.

“Believe me I’ve cried before but you didn’t see me and I’ve laughed before but you didn’t see me.

“I have blood inside me. I am a human as well, there is just a different level where it happens.”

It was also telling that Schumacher spoke in Italian at this car launch, something that was ‘well received’ among the fans in the crowd.

Hamilton has clearly taken a page out of Schumacher’s book and while he hasn’t learned to speak Italian fluently, and may never have to given the team mainly functions in English, it’s very much appreciated that he’s gone to the extra effort of speaking in the team’s native language.

He’ll hope his performances on the track only enhance his reputation with Formula 1’s most passionate fanbase over the coming months.

14-year-old sprinter defies age to become England under-17 champion

A teen sprinter who trains in Middlesbrough has sent shockwaves through the athletics world by becoming England under-17 champion over 60m.

Celine Obinna-Alo stormed to victory at the England Athletics Open U15/U17/U20 Indoor Championships at English Institute of Sport Sheffield on Saturday. Having clocked 7.46 seconds in both her heat and semi, the teen powered away in the final to finish in 7.38 seconds, a championship record and just 0.03 seconds outside Asha Philip’s British under-17 record.

At the age of 14, only Olympic 400m bronze medallist Katharine Merry has run quicker (7.35 seconds), placing Gateshead Harriers athlete Celine in an exclusive club. The youngster, from Houghton-le-Spring, said: “I’m really pleased and I’m so grateful to my friends, family, coaches, manager and everyone in my team who has supported me.”

Her coach Richard Kilty, from Stockton, winner of sprint relay bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, took part in the medal ceremony. Presenting her with the gold medal, Richard said: “Well done champ, all of that hard work, I’m so proud of you – amazing.”

Celine trains at Middlesbrough Sports Village, which is run by Everyone Active in partnership with Middlesbrough Council. She is part of Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions scheme, which empowers aspiring athletes to achieve their full potential through access to state-of-the-art training facilities and mentoring support from Olympians and Paralympians.

These facilities include Middlesbrough Sports Village, Rainbow Leisure Centre and Neptune Centre, as well as 240 other sites across the country. Richard is an Elite athlete on the scheme, meaning he works alongside other established athletes – such as Maisie Summers-Newton and Lauren Steadman – to offer advice to up- and-coming hopefuls in mentoring sessions throughout the year.

Last summer, the initiative supported 26 Sporting Champions who competed in the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, achieving nine gold, six silver and eight bronze medals. Olympic silver medallist and former world record holder Colin Jackson is the scheme’s Ambassador. You can apply for the 2025-26 Sporting Champions scheme here.

    1. A toxic and abusive dynamic

One of the biggest factors leading to the end of their relationship was its toxic nature. Brown acknowledged that both she and Richardson were involved in a cycle of mental, verbal, and physical abuse.

What may have started as a passionate romance quickly turned into a destructive relationship, with neither party able to break free from the pattern of negativity.

Their young age and lack of experience in handling relationships contributed to the intensity of their conflicts.

Brown admitted that their arguments often escalated beyond control, making it clear that the relationship was unhealthy.

Over time, the strain of constant turmoil became unbearable, prompting Brown to prioritize her well-being and step away.

    2. Personal growth and self-discovery

For Brown, the relationship with Richardson was a pivotal moment in her journey of self-discovery.

Before dating the American sprinter, she had struggled with openly embracing her identity. It was during this period that she found the confidence to come out and live her truth.

However, while she grew in one aspect of her life, she also recognized that the relationship was holding her back from evolving further.

Walking away from a toxic dynamic allowed her to refocus on herself, both personally and professionally. The experience served as a valuable lesson, teaching her about the importance of self-respect and the necessity of surrounding herself with positive influences.

Instead of remaining in a space that drained her energy, Brown chose to move forward, seeking healthier relationships and greater personal fulfillment.

    3. Sha’Carri Richardson’s public accusations

Another major breaking point in their relationship was the public fallout that followed their split. Richardson, who revealed their past relationship on social media, made allegations against Brown, including claims of theft.

Brown, however, denied these accusations, labeling them as false and malicious. She believed that Richardson’s actions were calculated attempts to damage her reputation and create unnecessary controversy.

The public exposure of their private issues only solidified Brown’s decision to part ways for good. Rather than engage in the drama, she chose to speak her truth and distance herself from the negativity.

Botswana’s 200m Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo will line up in the men’s 100m at the second Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season in Shanghai/Keqiao in May.

Letsile Tebogo will continue his bid for 100m glory in the Wanda Diamond League when he heads to Shanghai/Keqiao for the second meeting of the season on May 3.

The Botswanan star established himself as one of the biggest stars of men’s sprinting in 2024, sweeping to the 200m Olympic title and five Diamond League victories between July and September.

Having narrowly missed out on the Diamond League title at last year’s final in Brussels, Tebogo will be out to claim his first Diamond Trophy in 2025 before setting his sights on the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September.

This year’s campaign will also mark a switch in focus for the 21-year-old, who announced after his Diamond League victory in Rome last August that he would be turning his attention to the 100m in 2025.

Already confirmed for the 100m at the season opener in Xiamen on April 26, the Botswanan will head to Keqiao a week later to complete a Chinese double as he looks to get early points on the board on the Road to the Final.

Tebogo is one of several track and field superstars already confirmed for Shanghai/Keqiao, including high jump world record holder and Olympic champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh and 400m hurdles world record holder Karsten Warholm.

“I’m thrilled for my first-ever race at the Shanghai/Keqiao Diamond League! I can’t wait to bring some extra energy to an already amazing field,” said Tebogo.

If you want it, then earn it’ – Usain Bolt calls out ‘desparate’ Noah Lyles for claiming fastest man tag

Usain Bolt calls Noah Lyles’ fastest man claim desperate Image source: Imago

Usain Bolt has rejected Noah Lyles’ claim that he is the world’s fastest man, insisting the American must break his records to earn the title.

Double world record holder Usain Bolt has scoffed at Noah Lyles’ decision to brand himself the world’s fastest man.

After winning the Olympic 100m title, Noah Lyles labelled himself the tag, something that Usain Bolt believes he has yet to earn since he has not broken his 100m and 200m records and is not even close to them.

Usain Bolt’s 100m world record stands at 9.58 seconds while his 200m record is 19.19 seconds and he is regarded as the fastest man alive. He set the records at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Germany.

How Noah Lyles took away the title of ‘sprint king’ from legendary Usain Bolt

Noah Lyles has a personal best time of 9.79 seconds in the 100m, a time he set at the Paris Olympic Games. His 200m personal best time is 19.31 seconds set at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Usain Bolt noted that if Noah Lyles wants to be called the fastest man in the world, he has to let his times speak for him and for now, he is yet to attain that standard.

“I find it funny…when I heard about it for the first time, I wondered if I would lose my mind. That’s desperate of him…that’s the first thing I thought,” Usain Bolt said in his interview with The Fix podcast.

“I was like, come on man, if you want it then earn it man, earn it, earn it. You are the fastest man today. This year. Something I just laugh it off, just laugh. That’s desperation. Simply, break the records.”

The fastest man in the world tag has been highly debatable with some sports fans and analysts arguing that winning the Olympic title in the 100m guarantees that.

Others have argued that the athlete, who finishes the season with the fastest time, is considered the fastest in that season until another sprinter runs faster than them.

Quincy Wilson: The 17-year-old track star and his love story with Masai Russell’s sister

At the Paris Olympic Games, Noah Lyles clocked an impressive 9.79 seconds to cross the finish line first ahead of Kishane Thompson who came second milliseconds later. Fred Kerley rounded up the podium in 9.81 seconds.

Kishane Thompson ended the season with the fastest time in the world, the 9.77 seconds he clocked at the Jamaican Olympic trials.

However, one thing is evident, Usain Bolt who has the world record in the 100m remains, the fastest. From the interview, he insisted that Noah Lyles has to break his records first to be addressed with such high honours.
