Lions RBs David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs Put on Historic Rushing Performance in Win Over Ravens

The Detroit Lions delivered one of their most impressive performances of the season in a statement win over the Baltimore Ravens, powered by a historic night from their dynamic running back duo, David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. The pair combined for over 250 rushing yards and three touchdowns, reminding everyone why Detroit’s ground game has been one of the most talked-about storylines in the NFL this year.

From the opening whistle, it was clear that offensive coordinator Ben Johnson had a plan to attack Baltimore’s vaunted defense on the ground. Montgomery, the bruising veteran back, set the tone early with a series of hard-nosed runs between the tackles. His ability to churn out tough yardage kept the chains moving and wore down a Ravens defensive front that is usually one of the most physical in the league. Montgomery finished the game with 125 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a key fourth-quarter score that effectively put the game out of reach.

If Montgomery was the hammer, then Gibbs was the lightning. The second-year back showcased the electric playmaking ability that made him a first-round pick, breaking off chunk gains both inside and outside the tackles. Gibbs tallied 128 yards on the ground with a touchdown of his own, including a jaw-dropping 42-yard scamper that brought Ford Field to its feet. His burst and vision left Baltimore defenders grasping at air on several occasions, highlighting just how dangerous he can be when given space to operate.

The duo’s performance was not just dominant — it was historic. According to team statisticians, this marked the first time in franchise history that two Lions running backs each surpassed 120 rushing yards in the same game. Against a Ravens defense that had been allowing fewer than 90 rushing yards per game coming in, it was nothing short of remarkable.

Quarterback Jared Goff benefited greatly from the ground game’s success, as the play-action pass became a lethal weapon in the second half. With Baltimore forced to respect the run, Goff found wideouts Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams for key third-down conversions, helping to maintain control of the tempo and keep the Ravens’ offense off the field.

Defensively, Detroit did its part as well, limiting Lamar Jackson’s explosive plays and forcing Baltimore to settle for field goals in crucial moments. But make no mistake — this was a game won by the offensive line and the two running backs who capitalized on every crease and broken tackle opportunity.

With the win, the Lions improved to 3-1 and sent a clear message to the rest of the NFC that they are legitimate contenders. Montgomery and Gibbs may have very different running styles, but together they give Detroit a backfield combination that can beat opponents in multiple ways. If this performance is a sign of things to come, opposing defenses will have their hands full trying to stop one of the most dangerous rushing attacks in the NFL.
