Ian Wright has urged Manchester United to make a summer swoop for Ipswich Town striker and Chelsea transfer target Liam Delap.

Delap has impressed in his first season in the Premier League, scoring nine goals in 23 appearances since arriving at Portman Road from Manchester City in the summer.

The 22-year-old’s exploits and physical characteristics have led to interest from several top clubs, with Chelsea said to be one of the clubs monitoring the striker’s situation ahead of next summer.

A return to City could also be on the cards as Pep Guardiola’s side are said to have inserted a buy-back clause in the deal that saw Delap originally move to Ipswich.

United, meanwhile, still find themselves in desperate need of a reliable goalscorer, with Ruben Amorim even resorting to deploying Kobbie Mainoo as a false nine in a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in early February.

Both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have flattered to deceive since their respective moves to Old Trafford, with the pair registering just five goals combined in the league this season.

And having opted against signing another forward in January, Wright believes the club should now go all out to try and win the race for Delap’s signature in the summer.

‘Go and get Delap,’ the former Arsenal striker on the most recent episode of Wrighty’s House when addressing United’s striking woes.

‘The thing is he’s got that hunger and disrespect for everybody and it just feels like the kind of player they need.

‘They need a hero like that and he’s a hero waiting to happen. He’s hungry.’

Wright, however, was keen to stress that United’s in-possession approach must improve drastically before any striker can truly thrive in Amorim’s set-up.

‘Obviously, Zirkzee came on (against Leicester in the FA Cup) and he got one but I don’t think they put the ball in the box enough,’ Wright added.

‘I don’t think there’s anyone in the box for when the cross comes in. I don’t think they link the play or keep the ball well enough in the final third to sustain pressure on a team.

‘They lose the ball and then teams can break on them. There’s no structure to whether they are going to try to play through teams or around them.

‘So the forwards don’t know what’s coming. They don’t get the kind of service they depend on.

‘When’s the last time you saw a Man United player score a goal where he’s got across a guy at a near post? You don’t see those goals from Man United.’

Speaking earlier in the season, Delap said he was paying no attention to speculation linking him with a move away from Ipswich.

‘I don’t really look at things like that. So, yes, I’m just focused on Ipswich,’ Delap told Suffolk News in late December.

‘We are lucky to be playing in the Premier League. I think we’ve got a great opportunity here at Ipswich and we’re just trying to show our ability week in, week out, that’s a big plus for me.’

been reported to be of great interest to the Blues, with talk throughout January linking them with a mid-season move.

However, his current club, Ipswich Town, made it clear they were desperate to keep hold of him as they look to secure their status in the Premier League.

There were reports that stated that Ipswich had asked about the availability of Carney Chukwuemeka in negotiations between the two clubs, however he completed a move to Borussia Dortmund on loan.

With Chelsea one of a host of sides interested in the English striker, it may well come down to the player’s preference of his next club.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Delap is very intrigued by the prospect of a move to Stamford Bridge, with the opportunity to become the starting number nine clear to see.

He said to GiveMeSport’s Market Madness: “Chelsea are the frontrunners for Liam Delap, that’s the short answer. It’s going to be interesting, because naturally Ipswich could stay up and make a play to keep him, but the expectation is he will depart regardless.

“Chelsea have got a number of people, including Enzo Maresca that know Liam Delap, some of them have worked with him as well at Man City.

“Delap is quite intrigued by the Chelsea project, especially knowing that if he’s the number nine that comes in, he stands a very good chance of displacing or at least competing with Nicolas Jackson, who we must stress Chelsea do have big faith in.”

Despite it being his first season in the Premier League, Delap has taken to life in the top flight with ease.

In fact, the former Manchester City man is on the same amount of Premier League goals as Nicolas Jackson so far this season.

It is well known that Chelsea need to finally address the striker position after a number of transfer windows without signing competition for their current crop.

Jackson is going through somewhat of a dry spell at the moment, and the Blues are suffering in front of goal as a result of it.

  • Lions’ 2025 NFL Draft Interior Defensive Linemen Big Board

Lions’ 2025 NFL Draft Interior Defensive Linemen Big Board

Here are six interior defensive linemen Lions could target early on in 2025 draft.

Oregon defensive lineman Derrick Harmon celebrates a sack as the No. 1 Oregon Ducks host the Washington Huskies Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.

The Detroit Lions could be on the hunt for some interior defensive line help this offseason.

Alim McNeill and DJ Reader are slated to be Detroit’s starters along the interior of the defensive line once again in 2025. However, there is a fair amount of uncertainty at the position behind the two of them.

Subsequently, Lions general manager Brad Holmes could choose to add depth to the position group via this April’s NFL Draft (April 24-26). Detroit is currently set to pick for the first time at No. 28 overall.

If Holmes does go this route, here are six players that he and the organization could target in the first two rounds of the draft.

    1.) Derrick Harmon, Oregon

Standing in at 6-foot-5, 310 pounds, Harmon had an all-around productive season in his final campaign at Oregon.

He amassed five sacks, seven quarterback hits and 43 QB hurries, and proved to be both a stout pass-rusher (86.2 PFF pass-rush grade) and run-defender (80.5 PFF run-defense grade). The Ducks product has the physical makeup and skillset to be an effective interior defensive lineman at the next level.

As Pro Football Network’s Reese Decker writes, “Derrick Harmon is an absolute powerhouse. A strong, stout, and powerful interior lineman, he possesses a solid base, explosive initial punch, and plays with a low, smooth posture that minimizes his large frame.

At 310 pounds, he’s surprisingly nimble, with the ability to collapse and shrink the pocket. A tenacious block-shedder and elite run defender, it’s nearly impossible to find a player of his size who moves both vertically and laterally as well as he can.”

Harmon would be well worth the Lions’ first-round selection at No. 28 overall.

    2.) Kenneth Grant, Michigan

Checking in at 6-foot-3, 339 pounds, Grant had a solid final season at Michigan. He produced three sacks and 23 quarterback hurries, and received a Pro Football Focus overall grade of 83.7. He also graded out better as a run-defender (87.5) than as a pass-rusher (75.3).

The Wolverines product would be a welcomed addition to the interior of Detroit’s defensive line.

    3.) Walter Nolen, Ole Miss

Nolen, measuring in at 6-foot-3, 305 pounds, produced a dominant campaign in 2024 with the Rebels.

For starters, he was an ultra productive run defender, earning a 91.6 PFF run-defense mark. Plus, he recorded six sacks and 25 QB hurries. For his overall efforts, he notched an 88.9 grade from PFF.

As The Draft Network’s Keith Sanchez pens, “Overall, Nolen has high-level physical traits that translate to him being a dominant run defender while also being a productive interior pass rusher on the next level.”

It sounds like the Ole Miss product has the perfect combination of run-stopping and pass-rushing ability to be a high-level starter at the next level. Thus, it wouldn’t hurt the Lions to give him a serious look at No. 28 overall.

    4.) Tyleik Williams, Ohio State

Williams, checking in at 6-foot-3, 327 pounds, was a steady performer in his time at Ohio State. In four seasons with the Buckeyes, he racked up 137 total tackles, including 27 for loss, and 11.5 sacks. He also consistently put up positive PFF overall marks, with grades of 77.6 or higher in each of his three final seasons.

As The Draft Network’s Damian Parson conveys, “Tyleik Williams is a disruptive IDL prospect with great power at the point of attack. He’s a great run defender and potential impact pocket pusher.”

I could see Williams going late in the first round, but I think he’d likely be more of a second-round target for Detroit.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Riley Leonard (13) is sacked by Buckeyes Sonny Styles (6) and Tyleik Williams (91) / Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

    5.) T.J. Sanders, South Carolina

Sanders, measuring out at 6-foot-4, 290 pounds, put together a career-best campaign in 2024. He recorded solid marks as both a pass-rusher (81.9 grade) and a run defender (77.1 grade), and earned an overall mark of 82.4. It was good for the 31st-best grade out of 895 qualified interior defensive linemen.

Equipped with quick hands and an explosive first step, Sanders would be a solid find for Holmes on Day 2 of the draft.

    6.) Deone Walker, Kentucky

Walker, who suited up for three seasons with the Wildcats, wasn’t as good in 2024 as he was in 2023. A first-team All-SEC selection by the AP in ‘23, the 6-foot-6, 345-pounder amassed 55 total tackles, including 12.5 for loss, eight sacks and 39 quarterback hurries as a sophomore. Additionally, he earned an 80.6 overall mark from PFF for his efforts. He followed that up with just a 71.2 overall grade this past season.

The Kentucky product has enough athleticism and first-step explosiveness to be an impact interior pass-rusher at the next level. I think he’d be worth a look from the Lions on Day 2 of the draft.

Lions projected $41 million starter predicted to leave Detroit for AFC team image

With former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn taking over as the head coach of the New York Jets, there will inevitably be some Lions players who follow him to the Big Apple.

One of those players could be cornerback Carlton Davis, who had a fantastic first season in Detroit before suffering a fractured jaw that ended his campaign early. Now, Davis is set to hit the free-agent market in 2025.

Meanwhile, the Jets are set to lose one of their starting boundary cornerbacks in D.J. Reed, who has made it quite clear that he plans on playing elsewhere this coming season.

“I’m ready to go to free agency, bro,” Reed said in an article done by Tyler Dunne of Go Long. “I’m ready to see what’s next for me.”

With the Jets needing a new boundary cornerback to pair with Sauce Gardner and Michael Carter, USA TODAY’s Nick Brinkerhoff predicts Davis will land in New York. He also predicts Reed will land in Detroit, but here’s what he said about Davis.

“With Reed heading out of town to Detroit in our scenario, the door is open for a new cornerback to emerge in the Meadowlands,” Brinkerhoff said. “Davis thrived in Glenn’s scheme last season in Detroit, making him the perfect player to follow the coach to the Jets.”

  • Ange Postecoglou makes first team decision ahead of Man Utd and Ipswich Town

Ange Postecoglou makes first team decision ahead of Man Utd and Ipswich Town

This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Notice and Terms of Service apply.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has decided to give first team players ‘three or four’ days off ahead of clashes with Manchester United and Ipswich Town, despite a recent rotten run of form for the north London outfit.

Spurs were dumped out of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup in just a few days last week following defeats to Liverpool and Aston Villa. Postecoglou’s side have won just two of their last eight top flight outings and languish 14th in the top flight. Spurs will look to bounce back against Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday before making the trip to struggling Ipswich Town next weekend.

Despite the unconvincing performances against Liverpool and Aston Villa, Postecoglou has confirmed that first team stars will be given days away from training after a hectic fixture schedule. The club has been hit with an injury crisis this season, meaning that fully fit players have racked up the minutes and needed to work double time.

Tottenham Hotspur don’t have a midweek game since the turn of the year and Postecoglou confirmed that players would be allowed to recover as a result. He said: “I am just going to keep working like I have. We’ve got to give them some time off in the early part of the week.

“The boys who are coming back we have got an opportunity to give them a full week of training which is great. Come Tuesday, we should have three or four who have been missing. We can give them a full week of training rather than just throwing them in.

“By the time we get to the end of the week we will have something resembling a squad of players to prepare for a big game. That folds into the following week because again we have got seven days to prepare for the next game.

“That gives us a good opportunity to get some work into the guys who have been out for a while and give some rest of the guys who have been going at it. By the time we get back to Europe and midweek games, we will be in much better shape.”

Following that time to recover, Tottenham Hotspur are expected to welcome back several injured players for the meeting with Manchester United. A total of five first team stars could return to face the Red Devils.

Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, James Maddison, Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner are all pushing for a return to full training this week and Postecoglou is confident that will provide a ‘reset’ for his beleaguered side.

Speaking after defeat to Aston Villa, Postecoglou said: “Two and a half months of asking 18-year-olds and 17-year-olds and senior players, with no rest, to play Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday.

“If you think that is not at all a factor of how this team is performing then there’s nothing else I can say. There’s nothing else I can explain.”

Lions head coach Dan Campbell has added a new offensive coach to his staff.

The Detroit Lions are adding a new offensive coach from the college ranks with a national championship pedigree to Dan Campbell’s staff. Iowa State assistant head coach and running backs coach Tyler Roehl will be joining as an offensive assistant, CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported on February 11, 2025.

Roehl was a 7-time FCS National Champion while coaching at his alma mater, North Dakota State, as a graduate assistant, running backs and tight ends coach and offensive coordinator, according to his biography on the Iowa State website. He joined the Cyclones staff in 2024 after spending 2014 to 2023 in North Dakota.

Roehl, 39, joins new offensive coordinator John Morton, who was hired from the Denver Broncos to replace Ben Johnson after Johnson left to lead the Chicago Bears. Morton was the passing game coordinator in Denver for one season after spending 2022 as a senior offensive assistant with the Lions under Campbell.

The Lions have also hired former Stanford University head coach David Shaw from the Broncos as their passing game coordinator and former NFL QB Bruce Gradkowski as an offensive assistant. Gradkowski was the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Battlehawks of the XFL/UFL for two seasons.

The Cyclones went 11-3 in 2024, reaching the Big 12 conference championship game and then beating the Miami Hurricanes in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Roehl is the second offensive coordinator from Iowa State coach Matt Campbell’s staff to make the jump to the NFL in two years. Nate Scheelhaase left the Cyclones to become the passing game coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams after the 2023 season.

Before taking the job at Iowa State, Roehl’s North Dakota State Bison offense averaged 38.1 points per game, which was the 3rd-best in the FCS in 2023.

“As coordinator in 2023, NDSU had one of the most prolific offenses in FCS. The Bison led the nation in rushing yards (3,560), rushing touchdowns (47) and overall touchdowns (74). In his five seasons leading the offense, NDSU ranked among the top five nationally in rushing offense four times and paced the nation in rushing touchdowns in three straight seasons,” the Iowa State website says. “Roehl coached five FCS All-Americans and 11 players who combined for 15 all-conference honors.”

Roehl is from West Fargo, North Dakota, and was an All-American running back for the Bison. He played for North Dakota State from 2004 to 2006 and was the starting running back for two seasons, rushing for 1,431 yards with 21 touchdowns in 2007 and 1,053 yards for 13 touchdowns in 2008.

Roehl was signed by the Seattle Seahawks in 2009 as an undrafted free agent, but tore his ACL during offseason workouts, according to InForum. He was part of a rookie camp for the Minnesota Vikings the next season but his playing career ended after that.

Roehl started his coaching career as the running backs coach at Concordia College in Minnesota in 2010. He spent a season as an offensive graduate assistant at North Dakota State and two seasons as a high school coach in Moorhead, Minnesota, before he was hired as the tight ends/fullbacks coach by the Bison in 2014.

  • Alabama football trending for 2026 4-star CB who is committing soon

Alabama football is trending for an elite CB prospect in the 2026 recruiting cycle who has a commitment scheduled for next Wednesday, February 19th.

4-star CB Jorden Edmonds from Sprayberry High School in Marietta, Georgia is trending toward the Crimson Tide with a little over a week to go until he makes his announcement.

The 6-foot-3, 175 pound rising high school senior is ranked as the 106th best prospect and 10th best CB in the 247Composite rankings.

It’s an all-SEC affair for the blue-chip corner. Along with Alabama, his final five consists of Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.

Alabama extended an offer to Edmonds in March of last year and they are currently trending for his commitment. The On3 RPM (recruiting prediction machine) gives Alabama a 97.8% chance of landing his commitment.

247’s Brett Greenberg put in a crystal ball prediction in Alabama’s favor on Monday.

Alabama’s 2026 recruiting class is heating up

As things currently stand, Alabama only has a single commitment in the 2026 class. 4-star CB Zyan Gibson from Gadsden, AL committed to the Crimson Tide in December. Early commitments tend to mean very little in today’s recruiting climate, but Gibson seems pretty solid at the moment.

Alabama has one of the top defensive back coaches in the country in Maurice Linguist and he helped the Tide sign an outstanding secondary class a year ago. Expect the Crimson Tide to do that again in 2026.

Alabama is also in the Top 5 for another recruit who is expected to announce his college choice this month. 3-star OL Bear McWhorter from White, GA is scheduled to announce his commitment on February 28th and has Alabama in the final group with Michigan, South Carolina, Clemson, and Florida.

There’s no crystal ball picks in for McWhorter, but he was named after legendary Alabama coach Bear Bryant. That seems like good news for the Crimson Tide.

Elite TE Kaiden Prothro also recently announced Alabama as one of the final five schools in contention for his services.

5-star WR Tristen Keys recently locked in an official visit with the Crimson Tide.

We are technically in a “dead period” for recruiting, but a lot of work has gone in and Alabama should start seeing a flurry of commitments in the coming months as the 2026 class begins to take shape.

  • Ipswich Town column: Stay up or win the FA Cup? There’s only one answer…

Ipswich Town column: Stay up or win the FA Cup? There’s only one answer…

I’ve really enjoyed the FA Cup this year. Town have been decent and all of a sudden with Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all out of the competition, I’m perhaps rather foolishly thinking, hang on – we could have a decent run here.

I saw a question on social media which asked fans if they’d rather stay up or win the FA Cup?

For me, there is only one answer there and it’s the latter.

Ipswich Town fan columnist Joey Sadler
Ipswich Town fan columnist Joey Sadler

Football is so commercialised these days and sometimes I think we forget as fans exactly why we fell in love with our club in the first place.

Can you imagine seeing Town lift a major trophy? I know fans of a certain age before us have done it.

They probably got used to it during the glory years of Ramsey and Robson, but to see the Tractor Boys win something major in my lifetime would be an absolute dream.

Back to league action now though and a trip to Villa Park. This will be tough, they all are.

I am worried about the resurgent Aston Villa off the back of a very decent transfer window. We’ll do well to get a point there but if we play anything like we did in the reverse fixture, we’ll certainly have a chance.

After that it’s Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. Two games before the season, you may have winced at back-to-back, but now it’s two fixtures I’m looking at as a huge chance for us to get points in.

Who knows what’s going on with Tottenham? I’m not sure Ange himself does.

In their current state, we have to be seeing that as a game at Portman Road we’ve got to go and win.

It’s a similar story for Manchester United who still look all over the place. There’s another chance there.

I said after Southampton, if Town are to stay up then we have to start winning the games against those around us and begin to pick up a few shock results along the way.
