Emirates Cup rules and history

Since joining the competition in 2007, Arsenal have won the Emirates Cup seven times during their pre-season workouts.

The Gunners are the current holders of the trophy, having beat Ligue 1 side AS Monaco last year for the honour.

In previous years, the format of the Emirates Cup has often changed, with this year moving to a one-off match as opposed to a group stage format.

If a winner cannot be decided in normal time, then a penalty shootout will be required to separate the two teams.

Arsenal fans will be hopeful of getting a first glimpse of new signing Riccardo Calafiori on Sunday, following some recent absences.

Mikel Arteta claimed the Italian international missed the clash with Bayer Leverkusen due to general tiredness following his switch.

It means a potential first outing is finally on the cards for the defender, who is being slowly managed into the team.

There are doubts over the fitness of Jurrien Timber though, who also missed out on the match against Leverkusen.

The Arsenal boss confirmed that the defender had some “discomfort” which led to his omission.

Prediction

With Arsenal looking to enter the new season in style, the team will be looking for another dominating win on Sunday.

The Gunners are still expected to rotate their squad options, with plenty of key players returning to training late this summer.

However, plenty of the existing team have shown they are more than capable of impressing, as seen against Leverkusen.

While Lyon will prove a tough test, with the return of Ainsley Maitland-Niles – but not Alexandre Lacazette as he is at the Olympics – Arsenal should be able to pick up a win.
