Ange Postecoglou has now explained one of the biggest problems at Tottenham Hotspur last season

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has opened up about one of the most significant issues that plagued Spurs during the 2023–24 season, offering supporters a clearer picture of why the club struggled in key moments. The Australian tactician, known for his candid interviews and no-nonsense approach, addressed what he felt was the root cause of Spurs’ inconsistent form, particularly in the latter half of the campaign.

Postecoglou admitted that Tottenham’s biggest challenge last season was not necessarily tactical or technical, but psychological. He suggested that there was a lingering fragility within the squad when it came to handling adversity. “For me, the problem was never about quality,” Postecoglou explained. “We have good players here. The issue was about mentality — how we reacted when things didn’t go our way.”

This insight sheds light on Tottenham’s frustrating habit of losing momentum after conceding goals or dropping points in winnable games. Supporters saw this pattern repeatedly last season: Spurs would dominate possession, create chances, but one defensive lapse would see heads drop and confidence waver. Postecoglou has been keen to build a culture where players respond with aggression and focus rather than retreating into their shell.

The Australian coach also pointed to injuries as a contributing factor, but he was careful not to use them as an excuse. Tottenham were without key players for extended periods, including captain Son Heung-min and midfield general Rodrigo Bentancur. The lack of depth in certain positions forced Postecoglou to shuffle his lineup frequently, which disrupted rhythm and chemistry. “Yes, injuries hurt us, but good teams find a way,” he said. “We have to be resilient enough to cope with that.”

Postecoglou’s comments underline his belief that Spurs must develop a stronger collective identity. He wants the players to trust his high-pressing, attacking philosophy even in difficult matches. Last season, there were times when the team abandoned their principles under pressure, opting to sit back and protect narrow leads — something Postecoglou believes is counterproductive. “We can’t be a side that plays one way when we’re winning and another way when we’re behind,” he insisted.

Tottenham fans will find encouragement in Postecoglou’s determination to address these mental and tactical shortcomings. The summer has already seen Spurs move decisively in the transfer market, targeting players with leadership qualities and a winning mentality. New signings in defense and midfield are expected to bring not only talent but also composure in high-pressure situations.

Looking ahead, Postecoglou has promised that Spurs will be a tougher, more ruthless side this season. Training sessions have reportedly been intense, with an emphasis on decision-making under duress and sustaining attacking patterns for ninety minutes. “We’re building something here,” he concluded. “The supporters deserve a team that plays brave football and never stops competing.”

If Postecoglou’s diagnosis is correct and Tottenham can shed their old mental habits, Spurs could finally become a side capable of sustaining a top-four challenge — and perhaps even contending for silverware. For now, his honesty about last season’s flaws has set the tone for what could be a defining year at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
