Leeds Reach Deadline-Day Agreement for Nice Defender as Massive Willy Gnonto Decision Looms

Leeds United have moved quickly on transfer deadline day to strengthen their defensive options, reaching an agreement with Nice for French defender Melvin Bard. The deal comes at a crucial point in the summer window, with the club also facing a major decision over the future of Italian winger Wilfried Gnonto.

 

Leeds have been searching for additional cover at left-back throughout the summer, with Gabriel Gudmundsson currently the club’s main natural option on that side. The need for reinforcement became more obvious after Gudmundsson suffered an injury that ruled him out at the beginning of the campaign, forcing manager Daniel Farke to use James Justin in an unfamiliar role.

 

Bard has now emerged as the solution to that problem. The 25-year-old is set to join Leeds from Nice initially on loan, with reports stating that the agreement includes an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season. Leeds are expected to pay around €1 million for the loan, with a further €5 million required if they decide to complete the permanent transfer.

 

The French defender brings considerable experience to Elland Road. Bard joined Nice from Lyon in 2021 and has made close to 200 appearances for the club. His experience in Ligue 1 makes him an attractive option for Leeds, particularly as Farke looks to build greater depth across his squad following promotion and the club’s return to Premier League football.

 

Leeds also had competition for Bard’s signature, with West Ham reportedly interested in the defender. However, the Yorkshire club have won the race and are now working to complete the formalities before the transfer deadline. Bard is expected to travel to Leeds for his medical before completing the move.

 

While the defensive agreement represents positive news for Leeds, attention remains firmly focused on Gnonto. The Italy international is currently in Florence as he attempts to complete a move to Fiorentina. The proposed deal is understood to be an initial loan arrangement, with the Italian club having an option to make the transfer permanent.

 

However, Gnonto’s departure has not been straightforward. Leeds have reportedly made it clear that they would only give the final approval for the winger to leave if they could secure suitable attacking cover. That condition has placed considerable pressure on the club as the deadline approaches.

 

The situation became even more complicated after Leeds missed out on Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk. Leeds had reportedly spent time negotiating a potential move for the Ukrainian, only for Tottenham Hotspur to win the race for his signature. That setback has left Leeds needing to assess whether they can afford to allow Gnonto to depart without bringing in another attacking player.

 

Gnonto has reportedly fallen down the pecking order under Farke, making a move away attractive for the player as he looks for more regular football. Despite that, Leeds remain conscious of the importance of maintaining sufficient attacking depth during the season.

 

The winger has already completed medical checks in Italy and has even been pictured wearing Fiorentina colours, underlining how advanced the proposed move has become. Yet until Leeds officially give the green light, there remains uncertainty over whether the transfer will be completed before the deadline.

 

For Leeds, the arrival of Bard would solve one important squad problem, but the Gnonto situation could define the final hours of their transfer window. The club have strengthened significantly this summer, bringing in players including James Trafford, Tarik Muharemovic, Nico Elvedi, Harry Wilson and now potentially Bard.

 

With the deadline fast approaching, Leeds must decide whether Bard’s arrival is enough to allow Gnonto to leave or whether another attacking addition is required first. The next few hours could therefore determine not only Gnonto’s future but also the final shape of Farke’s squad for the season.
